I commented this same comment when Zach came on Paul's show but he continues to ask for WVUs "path to victory", knowing most people won't break down an entire path to victory. Well, I did...
WVU’s offensive line is a key asset in this matchup. Athlon currently has them ranked #13 in the nation. Yet, he seemed to overlook that. Their ability to consistently create good push at the line of scrimmage can open up running lanes for the talented backs and Garrett Greene, allowing WVU to establish a rushing attack. Simple advantage for WVU... In 2023, the only team that ran for more yards against PSU than WVU was Michigan. When WVU played them, Jahiem White didn't have a single carry! He ended the year only playing 5 games, averaging 168.4 yards per game and 7.7 YPC. I expect him to tip the scale this year. By consistently gaining 3-8 yards per carry, WVU can control the tempo of the game, wear down Penn State's defensive front, and keep their offense off the field. This strategy not only chews up the clock but also sets up manageable third downs, increasing the likelihood of sustained drives. This also provide rest for WVU's defense, allowing them to stay fresh for the times where they do have to face a talented offense.
Now let's talk about Garrett Greene. While Allar can definitely throw a more accurate ball, Garrett Greene's competitiveness, energy, and "dawg" mentality sets him apart. The dude takes and delivers hits (yes, not always good) and can get his team and the crowd fired up. I've seen few WVU players in history that can do that like him. If you don't think this isn't an extremely valuable asset, you don't know college ball. Let's not forget this is game 1 in a sold out Mountaineer Field. Not only is GG a dawg but his ability to make plays with both his arm and legs adds a dynamic element to the offense. By mixing in play-action passes, deep balls, and the and quarterback keepers, WVU can keep Penn State’s defense guessing and prevent them from keying solely on the run. Garrett Greene is a very talented deep threat passer as well. 2-3 deep completions that lead to points would be huge for WVUs offense.
Playing at home provides WVU with a significant boost. The home crowd can create a hostile environment for Penn State, especially considering their new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Communication issues and the pressure of a loud, energetic crowd are bound to lead to mistakes and miscommunications for Penn State's coordinators.
Penn State's transition to new offensive and defensive coordinators is certainly a vulnerability. The first game on the road is a tough test for any new coaching staff. WVU can exploit any lack of cohesion or adjustment issues by applying consistent pressure and mixing up defensive looks to confuse the new offensive coordinator. WVU only needs to capitalize on 1-2 mistakes in Penn St's offense to seal a win, especially if PSU is limited in total possessions.
Defensively, WVU must focus on limiting big plays and play the bend don't break model. Just avoiding huge plays will be crucial. By winning on first and second down, WVU can dictate the flow of the game and create opportunities for turnovers. A disciplined pass rush and solid secondary play will be essential in containing Penn State's offense.
WVU was #7 in the nation in time of possession last year. They did even better at home. Zach keeps talking about turnovers being the only way WVU can beat PSUs offense. He's doing this because it's an obvious strength for PSU. Tell me Zach, what happens if PSU just doesn't get the ball? What happens if they are limited by 4-6 possessions because WVU holds the ball? This may as well be as good as 2 turnovers and it's a very realistic scenario.
As for special teams, I may have missed this discussion but are we ignoring the issues with kicking at PSU!? I don't believe the official kicker has been released but reports are looking like Sander
Sahaydak will be the PSU kicker. He is 1-4 in his career with his one made kick from only 20 yards! This is bad bad!! They did get a transfer guy and the two are battling for a starting position but either way they go, there will be huge question marks at kicking. Meanwhile, WVU returns a senior kicker who was 46-46 on XPs last year and 81% on FGs. If we're talking about potential 1 score games, this cannot be overlooked. Not to mention the best long snapper in college football is at WVU. Again, all it takes is 1-2 mishaps in the kicking game to change the game. This is very likely to happen in WVU's favor.
If just some of this happens, WVU wins somewhere in the vicinity of 21-17, 27-21, or 27-24...
Now, saying this and doing it are two different things but for this dude to not be able to see this happening at all just shows his ignorance and lack of research. It seems that he based his opinion of WVU soley on the game vs PSU last year. What a great sample size!

It's going to be a challenging game. PSU has to play solid, mistake-free football. They can't let WVU get momentum from turnovers and mistakes. It could go downhill very quickly. PSU should prevail by just taking care of business. But the first game is usually a crapshoot. Anything can happen.

Really looking forward to this game. Last year was competitive in Happy Valley. Greene was an unknown commodity with his legs, but he will get a spy or 2 this year...Remember last year PSU should have been up 6 more in the first half but our FG kicker missed 2 easy ones and was replaced after that. Good test on the road but PSU has the experience and depth. Even if it's close in the first half, we will wear WV down and pull away. Andy K - agree the difference here. Trey Wallace can be a true #1 WR but was injured last year. And Fleming...is solid as a pass catcher, but his downfield blocking will help spring the backs for big gains. He's one of the better WR blockers. Good analysis on both sides.

Most WVU homers can talk themselves into anything especially when everyone is 0-0. But no difference than PSU, PITT, OSU. Both PSU and WVU have to handle their problems before anything great happens to either team . Both have coaching problems like the HC. PSU wants a National Title, WVU wants respect and a B12 Championship. Neither going to happen unless changes are made at both schools.

Just wondering how PSU people can say they are returning all their best players when they lost Robinson, Fashanu, Lambert-Smith, and 6 other guys that got drafted. Without them, Ol Miss made them look very average. Honest question because I don’t know the roster very well. I do think moving Carter to the edge is better for his draft status, he will definitely be the best player on the field, but it also makes it easier for WVU to stay away from him.

One correction, West Virginia defense did not "contain" Singleton. He himself had a huge Sophomore slump. WVU was his 4th highest rushing output of the year. He had less yards against Rutgers, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware, Indiana and more.

WVU is following what Pitt and Syracuse did with Penn State. They complain that we don't play them anymore, and when we do, you need to buy multi-game (3 in the case of this game) tickets. That is why this game is ranked the #16 most expensive college football game this year: the base cost is the cost of 3 games if you are a visitor.
