I think rubber bands are useful but only in precision circumstances. Add edit / Quick trans is faster for me as I have frame durations memorized for all of the normal framerates. (Do it enough and it become second nature)
Rubberbanding is additive on top of the mixer's gain for a clip so it's easy to get lost if using both liberally or interchangeably. They are separate.
I stick to mixer for overall gain and only rubberband when I need to get deeper into a clip's audio fixing spikes or low dialog bits and ducking.
Keep them separate in your head, that way if you need to adjust db on the whole of M&E because it's too hot throughout, the mixer still works as expected with the rubber banding as a layer of finer adjustment on top of it.
Another important use for mixer gain is when it's going to an audio engineer. Instead of lifting out unwanted dialog where people are talking over each other on different mics, just drop the clip to -infinity (can use rubberbands too). That way, you don't hear it but the sound guy has the clip in case he needs it and isn't bitching at you over not having the media. Everyone's happy.
AND FOR GOD'S SAKE, NEVER MUTE CLIPS and then deliver it to someone else. Muted clips don't get exported. CLEAN UP YOUR FILTHY HABITS. NO BEER FOR YOU!

Thanks for this man, I would recommend setting head and tail fade to keys... No need to go into the transistion menu for end and start at cut fades. One thing I don't know, is there a way to alter levels on the fly, via the mixer and have it create keyframes on a track? I know there is a live and auto mode in the mixer but I'm not sure how it works. Thanks again!

There definitely is a live mixer mode but I would only think to use it if I was re-editing an hour plus live concert/event. It's on google but for short promo/packages like i cut I don't need it so I choose to drink instead of learning it!

I want to really thank you! I took at AE gig, but it turns out I didn't know how much I didn't know, if that makes any sense. You've been a life saver!

I have to say I haven't had to render an audio mix transition since about 2002 ;)

Hah...You are so right!!....My brain can't deal with leaving anything unrendered so I always render everything at some point even though it's not needed!

Green Dot Effects. GUESS WHAT, you don't have to render! Not since 2001.

Ha..you are so right Mark! I have total irrational OCD where I couldn't lay off anything to tape that wasn't rendered and I know I can't export anything that isn't completely rendered. Plus I like the downtime during renders!

Really thankful for your tutorials. If anyway you can help me I would appreciate it. Im trying to do a paint effect animation (like the scribble effect that is done in PPro)and ad a glow to it. But for the life of me I can't figure out how to add a bcc glow. Is it possible?

Hey D, so I really don't think you can add a Boris effect to any brush strokes from the AVID paint tool because the "paint" doesn't really create any alpha info. Without AfterEffects I think the "scribbles" would have to made in one of the Avid title tool. Then add a boris glow effect and hit apply to title/matte. I will ask some other people though to confirm. Adobe almost always wins on effects.

      @@avidbeer thanks for the reply
Im sure you're right. The way avid deals with effects have always been a issue with me.

Here is my question that nobody has been able to answer. When I fade audio to 0 using rubber band and then put a 4 frame dissolve at the edit point (I work in news and dissolve all of my audio 4 frames) the audio in the dissolve spikes back up to full. It forces me to have to o back and remove that 1 effect.

I don't an easy solution for this because that shouldn't happen...Once you bring the audio down to zero it doesn't matter what kind of dissolve is on it. It shouldn't come back up. Respond here if you ever figure out what the issue was. Cheers!
