      Before reading the VN when I saw this quote, I thought Beatrice some character in the game that was loved by the MC.
      While reading the VN, and I saw the quote again, I thought it meant that Beatrice was truly revived because magic.
      So Kinzo the maniac was in love with Beatrice and sacrificed his family in pursuit of Beatrice.
      After reading the VN, it was all a misunderstanding. Beatrice was never revived. And yet, sleep peacefully- rather than the expectation of sacrificing his family for Beatrice, sleep peacefully was in fact a solemn mourning.
      Irony at its finest. Cos perhaps 'truly' refers to the existence of Beatrice only coming to light on that day?

    • @konaplays1920
      @konaplays1920 Před 4 lety +142

      You know, this novel really changed my way of thinking toward stories of the mystery genre. As an avid mystery reader and fan of the murder mystery genre, I often times fall into a one-dimensional way of thinking. From the second I learn that the story is a murder mystery, I would jump right in and try to reach the first death while keeping an eye out for foreshadowing or clues that may help me discover who the murderer is. Sentimental moments are superficial and secondary, only serving to disguise the murderer's actions. There was no point in getting to know the characters and their backstories, aside from their possible motive for murder. To me, they felt like pieces on a chessboard that needed to fall first in order to paint a more clearer view of the game state.
      But as I read Umineko, some human part of me began to surface. These characters weren't just stand-ins to increase the body count. Each of them had complex characterizations that caused them to act the way they do and drives them. All the characters were human, each of them being morally gray in the sense that there are some things that they've done that were sinful yet you still feel sympathetic for them after learning their intentions. The ones that come off rude and obnoxious in Ep1 always had a caring side that you don't get to see until later on into the story. It got to a point where I found that I actually liked all the characters despite their rough edges. It made me realize that they weren't just random strangers, but a family that someone else (Battler) sincerely cherished.
      Krauss seemed rude and haughty at first, but you realize that he really cares for his family. He's gullible and ended up falling into a scam that robbed him and his family of their money. He ended up stomaching his pride and worked together with wife in order to repay the debts. It wasn't easy for him as he was the main breadwinner of the family, but his naivety was forgiven by the work he did to fix his mistake.
      Eva was quite the hotheaded jerk throughout the first several episodes, but if there was one thing, is that she is very caring for not only her family, but the families of the others as well. She dearly loves George and her husband, but also likes Battler, Jessica, Maria and Ange as well through her actions. Characters in the games cannot deviate much from their original characters and her actions with the children shows how much she cares for others though she may hate her siblings. Ange later realizes this but was too late to reciprocate the feelings.
      Rudolf is a playboy and had many faults of his own regarding his marriages. But if there was one thing, he really cares for his family as well. He did his best to provide for Asumu and Kyrie despite his original intentions and still loved Kyrie even though she tricked him. He's an incompetent father but still supports his children to their fullest, allowing Battler to cool down for 6 years at his grandparents' while still providing for him.
      Rosa is a mixed bag. We cannot forgive her actions though we can understand why she went through with them. Although her intentions are good, she, like the rest of her siblings, fail to properly convey them. We often joke around saying Rosa is "Best Mom" in quotes but Ep 2 is where she went full BEST MOM.
      Kinzo of course, has a lot of problems of his own, especially regarding Beatrice and the subsequent offspring. He cannot be redeemed for his sins but at the same time, you can't help but be sympathetic for him of the problems he caused. His joyful laughter during the Halloween Party and smile really warms the heart.
      The more I read, the more my perspective changed. It went from "Alright, these people are now dead. What can I figure out from their bodies?" to "This was a horrible tragedy that shouldn't have happened". This mindset struck me with a large force as I found myself guilty of doing the former more often than not in other murder mysteries. Though murder mysteries are fun to puzzle and reason, Umineko reminded me that the lives of the people in the story are the ones that are being toyed with by the reader. That these are people that others care about. That I shouldn't lose sight of my humanity. That without love, the truth cannot be seen.

    Answer Arc may have been awesome but episode 1 will always be the peak of Umineko in my heart.
    Having recently read 'And Then There Were None', I've realised how lacking the ten characters are.
    As a mystery, it sets up the mystery and does nothing else. I expect the characters to die and the book ends.
    Umineko on the other hand, nothing can compare to the 'WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS ENDING?!?!' when the credits rolled.

    • @youtubezio2713
      @youtubezio2713 Před 7 měsíci +10

      Yes but you have to realize that Christie's works are classical mystery literature, where the plot is treated more as a tool to set a game between the reader and the mystery than as a full-fledged story with drama and character development. In "then there were none" the characters are basically just elements in the mechancis of the mystery itself, they never are meant to complete a journey as people or be known by the reader in a more intimate-level. :)
      And, well, without "And then there were none" we probably would've never had an Umineko or other beautiful stories that are inspired by it!
