Yes, you can do that, I typically don't because I like my lyric videos to be over a solid background to decrease distractions. Watch this video for an example of what's possible when it comes to background images in iMovie czcams.com/video/Tw356IYj9tU/video.html. If I have time I'll make another tutorial on how to do this.

You can use an mp3 file. If you have itunes on your computer you can just open the mp3 file in itunes (it doesn't have to be purchased from itunes for it to appear in the itunes application.) Otherwise I believe (not 100% sure) that you can just click and drag the file from the finder into your project.
