  • The legendary Mario Andretti returned to a modern F1 car by jumping into the McLaren MP4/28 at the Velocity Invitational at Laguna Seca. These are his first few laps as he got used to the car, later on he got faster and faster.

Yes, the *_car_* was a 2013 car (not "modern" as the title wrongly states); but this event occurred on Saturday October 15, 2022. One clue is the narrator saying "...the 82-year-old Mario Andretti...". Mario wasn't 82 in 2013, he was only 73. such a nice drive for a man in his age. Yes, he is not going on the edge but still a progression can be seen in this 4 minutes video and he is really coping with the g-forces. Most people in 80s have problems to go with their cars in traffic.

That livery looks so cool on that car. Ofc the vodafone-chrome-livery is also a classic, but I really would have liked to see that one on those cars as well.

Despite working in the sport for a number of years, the high point of my F1 experience was Mario’s over-taking of Jody at the Queen’s Hairpin at Long Beach, 1977.
I was there, and it was joyous . . .

Super Mario ! When I was still a teenager, I saw him compete live at an F1 race in Zeltweg, Austria. This was on August 17, 1980, exactly 5 years after the fatal accident of the American Mark Donohue. We also looked at the site of the former accident from a few meters away. Mario's car was no longer competitive in 1980. That's when the turbo era began with Renault. He was also eliminated in this race, but I've been a big fan of his ever since!
