Recovery Stories - Dave

These stories are real.
Dave, Odyssey's Lived Experience Lead, talks about growing up and searching for a male role-model, having trouble at school, and being labelled and defined by the system. Dave talks about a lifestyle of drug use and criminal activity, which led to incarceration. Dave says he found peace, humility, purpose, and a calling to peer support, after a chance encounter with an old friend.
Kaimahi Stories is a place where Odyssey kaimahi (staff) talk about their experiences and their work at Odyssey. Some join us with lived experience and are on recovery journeys, while others have joined Odyssey due to a passion for the work.
For over 40 years, Odyssey has supported tens of thousands in Aotearoa.
We support people whose lives are affected by substance use, mental health issues, or other behavioural health concerns.

Dave, I met you once upon a time, maybe twice but you made an incredible impact on me and how and you shared that amazing compassion and gentleness for empowering people. We are all people living different experiences here on earth. For different reasons.
You have been like a shining star 🌠🌠🌠 I lovel the gentle way that is so genuine and shared so eloquently here. But more important people hear you speak because of the way you share.
