Wonderful video, Derek. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into the production by including footage of your tour of the U.S.S. Pampanio (SS-383).
Derek, love your reviews! Bought several games because of them. Recently purchased The Hunters and Silent Victory based on your obvious love of both games, have played a career in each must say I am truly impressed! Thank you so much for bringing these wonderful experiences to life. Very easy to learn the mechanics after watching your videos, keep doing what your doing.....Kevin
I have a bought a brand new copy of this game as a new batch over 700's now are being reprinted and shipped. I wanted a submarine game and when I saw your review, I decided that I wanted this. Your review was great and I understood how it works. Thank you Sir!!
When I was a teenager, my folks thought they were "noise." Then my dad read the lyric sheet for Aces High, and was impressed. He approved after that. Even drove my buddies and I to go see them for Somewhere In Time!
forgot to mention to have another video of nuts and bolts type playing with the additional rules such as evasive maneuvers, torpedo circular run and one example of a special mission. tks! i am still going through the manual for my 1st patrol...
+Yugo Ferraro I recommend playing out your first career using just the standard rules. After a few patrols, it becomes second nature. After that, throw in advanced rules. It'll be easy once your comfortable with the basics :)
Really looking forward to this one, since I love the theme and love the old B-17 game. Have this one ordered and am now just eagerly awaiting its arrival. :-)
Played "1776" as a kid and just getting back into wargaming. Glad to see there are a number of solitaire games now. It's a lot harder to find someone to play these in this digital age. I saw your review of Tiger Leader linked to Armchair General and subscribed to your channel. You're like the Bob Ross of Wargaming reviews...got a relaxing quality to them. I just started playing Tiger Leader (Have you tried the 1.2 rules yet? They seem to address some of the balance issues you mentioned in your review.) I think I'm going to pick this one up as well. Looks great.
+spbdrummer38 Welcome aboard :) No...I haven't tried the new rules yet. I've decided to wait for the official, final, printed update that will be coming out at the same time as Sherman Leader. I'll be re-visiting Tiger then. Looking forward to it :) Hope you get your hands on Silent Victory. A favorite of mine, along with it's predecessor, The Hunters: German U-Boats at War.
well Derek you've gone and done it again!just parted with my hard earned cash and just ordered a copy!loved the HUNTERS but always had a great interest in the pacific campaigns so this is one really looking forward to!
Excellent review, Derek. I was on the fence with this one as I already own Silent War, but have been too daunted by its scale and complexity (plus too busy) to get it to the table. This looks a lot more digestible and I like the idea of running a single sub instead of an entire sub war effort. (I also bought the Firefly board game...I've had my eye on it for a while, but I saw your review of that and, well...why not, right? I especially appreciate you filming on location with the Pampanito, as well as interspersing the review with footage from inside - well done. What do you use for editing? I've been using Adobe Premiere Pro for years for the video work I do at my day job. I've been thinking of going into video reviews/playthroughs too, but I don't know if the world needs yet another game reviewer on video, LOL. Thanks again for the work and the post!
+Texscripter Glad you enjoyed the review Tex! Oh yeah...Silent War is a huge game. This is much more digestible. Easy to put away after a short session and pick up right where you left off later:) I use Apple iMovie. Really, for reviews, just use whatever you're comfortable with. The game should always be the star of the show, so you don't need anything fancy. If it sounds fun, do it! Doesn't matter how many others are doing reviews. The more the merrier. You don't even have to do a typical "review" if you don't want. Sometimes folks just want a look at the components and a description of the gameplay. Do whatever brings you enjoyment :)
Thank you. That was inspiring, can't wait for your next vid!. Do you know when they will be rereleasing HUNTERS? I'm down for preorder, just haven't heard anything Yet.
I never liked heavy metal music, but you make very nice videos about very nice games, so i can say i didn't even notice there is some Iron Maiden music here :) I like the Field Commander Alexander solitaire game too.
+SingleHandedWarfare I searched internet for the lyrics, the song is clearly against war and says that the sub captain and crew are dead jerks with some totally useless medals. I don't know if it's proper for this game and it's more a 1960s hippie music theme (Pink Floyd-Corporal Clegg a typical example) than some bloodstained heavy metal music.
Well, my friend, the message a piece of music delivers is all up to the person listening to it:) The chorus seemed particularly fitting to me: Running silent, running deep We are your final prayer Warriors in secret sleep A merchantman's nightmare A sailor's death lies waiting for all of you below Running silent, running deep Sink into your final sleep I respect your take on it, but feel my inclusion of it quite proper. It's ok...I certainly don't expect everyone to be an Iron Maiden fan, LOL :)
+SingleHandedWarfare The subject was not me being a Maiden fan or not, i clearly said that i dislike all metal music. Thanks for making the case more clear, i agree that this part of the lyrics fits the game very well. This part has a different meaning than the complete lyrics of the song, consider the whole lyrics and there is some ... song-game hull leakage. Same applies to any other form of art or way of people's communication and expression. I have that habit too, sometimes i can isolate a part and get my own meaning. And certainly, each song can mean different things to every person, no doubt about it. I went a bit further though, i think it is worth to notice that some musicians and fans with a specific way of living and playing have enough common ideas with some other musicians and people who are widely considered as enemies and opposite trends. Just a few thoughts not related to this game.
+Phil Barber Not likely, Phil. Took a look at it when it came out, and it didn't look too solo friendly, so I passed on getting it. If I ever get my hands on a review copy, I might check it out :)
I'm utterly new at this and you have uncomplicated things so much for me. Thank you.
Derek, truely one of your best reviews! Love the gentle rocking back and forth of the Pompanito!
Thanks Mike :)
Next time I do something like that, I'll need to buy a sturdier tripod!
One of your best! Thanks, Derek, for all your effort and love of our little hobby. Loved the tour of the sub. The game looks darn good.
Wonderful video, Derek. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into the production by including footage of your tour of the U.S.S. Pampanio (SS-383).
Thanks John :) It was a treat for me to be able to share that with everyone!

ps love the maiden track!was lucky enough to see them in 1980 supporting Rainbow(well before bruce Dickenson era)showing my age now!lol!

He approved after that.

Keith Versey , Up the Irons!
Great review! The tour to the sub was very appropriate and fun. Thanks for your excellent videos.
Fantastic review my friend. I expect that you had a great time on location but thanks for sharing it with us.
I had an absolute blast :)
Check out the tour video I did. Total submarine porn
Just received my own copy yesterday after watching these vids. I"m having a blast. Everything you said was on the mark.
Happy to hear, WA! Have fun, my friend :)
Great location and another great review!

Ah iron maiden, the soundtrack to history.
And they're still kicking a**! :)
This review was therapeutic

A solid winner :)
Great video shipmate
Great stuff!

You had me at the Iron Maiden intro.
Eddie lives :)
Really kicks in the door, doesn't it? :)
how did you write the clear info onto your log. Love your review thanks.
Thanks for this review.
Between you, Stuka Joe and Macrowargamer...my wife is gonna murder me or I’m gonna go broke.Just preordered Silent victory(2nd printing).
Ok. Please consider making a video on Silent Wars as well and its counterpart Silent Steel. Very good input from your videos. ;)
This game is fantastic it's in my top ten now better by a mile than queen of the sky.where is that sub to you visted .great review as always.
Thank you Phil :)
The Pampanito is in San Francisco, just a short walk from Pier 39
Will have to have a visit one day .hms Belfast in London is worth a look a ww2 crusier so a lot of service
If I ever get across the pond, Belfast and Victory are on my "to do" list :)
+SingleHandedWarfare yes I must go to the victory too soon .wouldn't a solo game of that age be great
It certainly would :)
Thank you. That was inspiring, can't wait for your next vid!. Do you know when they will be rereleasing HUNTERS? I'm down for preorder, just haven't heard anything Yet.
Not sure if they've got a target date yet. I'm sure it'll ramp up once "The Hunted 1943-45" nears completion, though.
I never liked heavy metal music, but you make very nice videos about very nice games, so i can say i didn't even notice there is some Iron Maiden music here :)
I like the Field Commander Alexander solitaire game too.
The moment I cracked this game open, I knew Run Silent, Run Deep from Maiden would be the opening music :)
It's just too perfect! LOL!

Better playability compared to The Hunters? Also your thoughts on Silent War? I do own it but I think the rules are so overwhelming
+Yugo Ferraro Playability is about the same as Hunters. Same system.
Haven't played Silent War yet. It's on my shelf waiting :)
Gooooood
Any chance of a blue max review
+Phil Barber Not likely, Phil. Took a look at it when it came out, and it didn't look too solo friendly, so I passed on getting it.
If I ever get my hands on a review copy, I might check it out :)
Thanks. Just got the game. As soon as I can I'm going on patrol. 😁
I think your soundtrack is from a guy who gargles with razor blades.
+1 for Iron Maiden song. :)
please tell me you DO play Silent Hunteron the PC.
+Yugo Ferraro I used to. SH3 was the last incarnation I spent a lot of time with. Terrific game! Just not in to video games so much anymore.
