Photography Tips - Histograms Explained

- Histograms are a graphic representation of the tones recorded in an image. Sounds complicated but I promise it isn't. They're a very useful tool for checking your exposures because you can't always rely on your camera's LCD.
Histograms work brilliantly in conjunction with your camera's highlight warnings which flash on and off on areas where the image is overexposed and there's no detail recorded. There will be times when your camera makes the wrong exposure (www.photographycourses.biz/wro...) because it thinks the world is grey and that's how it make the exposure. But if the scene you're shooting isn't mid grey it'll probably get it wrong. And the histogram will help you sort that out.
In this vid we'll explain histograms - what they mean and how to read them.
Mike Browne - Jak na to + styl
Histograms were a scary mystery I kept avoiding. I got myself a D3500 and have been watching your videos, now I love histograms. All make perfect sense now. Thanks.
Mike, the best video on Histogram. You do it by showing the examples, not just talking about it. Your practical approach is brilliant. Thank you, sir.
Thanks Azham Shah Abdullah - CHRISTINA :-)
Hi Mike - I picked up my first DSLR almost a year ago knowing nothing about photography. Almost everything I've learned has been from youtube and after watching literally hundreds of videos, I can say that yours are without a doubt some of the best out there. You're never heavy handed and you never talk down to your audience. Everything is easy to understand and always helpful.
You, sir, are awesome
I don't know much about mirrorless cameras, but I do think they will become more and more popular. Over the next few years i think we'll see some big changes in cameras. Don't get too hung up on what camera is best. So long as you can take control of it when you need to and change the lens / focal length you should be OK.
Mike, I've learned more from you in the last two weeks I started watching your vids than the 6 months I've been reading textbooks. Thanks you.
Histograms were a complete mystery to me until I checked out this video. Very interesting and so informative, I really enjoyed watching it.
I've seen several videos on understanding histograms and they can often be confusing. This is the best one I've seen so far. Your videos are excellent.
Thks, I especally like the way you can clearly communicate to those outside your discipline, most can't/won't.
Thank you so much for saying so. Please help us spread the word about our films by 'liking' 'G+ing', sharing them and linking to us on photo forums, Facebook etc
I have learned so much more in a day from your videos than I have in the past MONTHS from others' videos. Great format and fantastic way of explaining and breaking things down for people. Instant subscribe!
Fantastic ***** Thank you. Please help me make more videos by telling other photographers about them on forums, Facebook etc...
It is. It came with a cheap kit some years ago and I kept it for the reasons you mention. Thanks for your appreciation.
@Mike the best teacher on CZcams. Period. Thank You.
I went through thousands of videos explaining Histogram and I must say this one is the most correct and accurate videos on CZcams so far❤️❤️
As a beginner to photography, your videos are proving to be invaluable. I bought a Lumix G80 MFT and the way you explain things is perfect for me, things make sense, I can see the results in the pictures. A massive thanks for your videos Mike. ATB MMMD
That's great - you do sound like a perfect candidate to try a sample of my Masterclass in Photography... www.photographycourses.biz/courses/photography-masterclass
If I could "like" this a million times, I would. This is extremely helpful and very clear. Absolutely wonderful!!! Thank you so very much!
Great little video that refreshed my knowledge on these sometimes underused parts of our EVF or LCDs. Just switched my on to display on my A6000
This video was made almost seven years ago and it’s as relevant or more so today in explanation of Histogram. This is one of the very best explanation I’ve ever seen in many months of learning photography on so many channels. Many talk about Histogram, but few until this video actually do show and tell in actual explanation to convey actually what they mean. So I’m friggin thankful for a video like this that use demonstration to explain the point. Now I really understand things far better.
thank you ardent, glad you find this helpful, please do share around so we can make more free videos :) - Melissa pp Mike
WOW, what a great vid,ffs why aint anyone else explained it so simply, concise and well so well, I've looked at the histogram on some shots and always though everything should be in the middle !!!, jeeze when logic takes over it's so simple(ish).
Thank you MB, already subbed as your's are the best tutorials on the web, liked and tnx again.
thank you Ed! please do share our film so we can make more! - Melissa pp Mike
Ah now i understand histograms thank you .I have been into photography for years Canon F1 and Contax RTS but have only recently got into digital so all this is new to me thanks
Thank you lige karso. Please help us spread the word and grow the community by 'liking' 'G+ing', sharing our videos and linking to us on photo forums, Facebook etc
Watching in 2019 and still like all of your work it’s incredibly helpful, practical and PACKED full of insight!! Thanks Mike :)
Watching in 2022, still the best histogram explanation on CZcams
I haven't taken any serious photos since using a 35mm black and white Pentax S1a (old in those days) over 30 years ago. However I recently bought a Canon 700D with a kit 18-55mm lens. Using your videos has untangled the whole process and slowly I'm begining to take the type of photos I did "way back then". Thanks for your easy, practical style in passing on your obvious extensive knowledge, you gave me enough to leave full Auto alone and go into Av preferred, plus a few other "creative modes".
Thank you Harry - MIKE :-)
Excellent! This is the best histogram video I've seen so far. Your great example photos and clear explanation have cleared up the mystery of the histogram. Well done.
Thank you Robert. Please help me make more videos like it by sharing it with other photographers on forums, Facebook, ClickASnap, Flickr etc. - MIKE :-)

For anyone curious,
In Photoshop you open 'Levels' by going to
Images >Adjustments >Levels or by pressing Crtl+L
and play around with the histogram.
I like your keyboard mike :)
The photo examples used were very helpful in understanding the concept of histograms.
Hey mike. Would love to see some landscape tutorials. You are great at conveying things. You are a magnificent teacher. You rock. Thanks.
Thank you deepak sharma
Excellent tutorial - helped me understand fully the idea behind histograms. It also reinforces my idea that viewfinders are better for assessing exposure than screens - but this is just a personal preference.
Thanks Toll Bar - I prefer viewfinders to screens too.
Lovely job, a great help. Thanks very much. Jon
Well done! Very helpful. Thanks for sharing your expertise,
Finally I get it!!! You're wonderful at explaining this. Thank you!

Thank you +newportnick19 Please help me make more videos like it by sharing it with other photographers on forums, Facebook, Flickr etc. - MIKE
This is really useful, thanks. I also keep in mind, however, that there is often no "correct" exposure, depending on the feeling you're trying to create in your image. Underexposure creates more drama, overexposure is often dreamlike or nostalgic. But if you don't know how to control your exposure, you'll always be shooting more or less accidentally.
@How to Sober - 💯 Yes yes and yes. There is no 'correct exposure' - it's a creative choice for each of us...MB
@@MikeBrowne Thanks. I shot very instinctively the first couple of years, and noticed that especially with documentary and travel portraits I leaned toward underexposing for shadows and backlighting. I really love the mood those images create. Then, when I decided to increase my technical knowledge, I started watching all this content about "proper" exposure, "proper" focus, etc. and got self-conscious about whether my photos were actually any good. I think it depends on whether you're using photography as an art form or simply trying to accurately represent a place, event etc. in a general way. For me, I want to capture what *I* personally noticed most, which may be a certain expression or feel of the moment. That means taking license with the rules. It's nice to hear photography channels acknowledge this. The point of being technically proficient is to have control over your creative decisions so that your good work doesn't occur by accident, and so you don't get stuck in ruts because you simply don't have other ways of photographing a thing. Your channel has been great, thanks.
Fantastic as usual! Thank you!
WOW! I totally understand now how to use my histogram, AMAZING! I actually have a few images that are correctly exposed, LOL! Thank you Mike.
Best explanation I've seen on using the histogram, easy to follow and very well taught.
thank you LordKwad, please do share it too so we can make more or visit our website at www.photographycourses.biz/videos to see more videos - Melissa pp Mike
@@MikeBrowne I've been looking into your online courses and hopefully in the new year I can get started on the ultimate beginners course. I had a look at the sample and it seemed very well thought out and kept my attention which is always a bonus aha

Hi Mike, thank you. You are an absolutely fantastic teacher. Your explanations and examples of what these histograms represent are truly well presented and cleared up a lot of confusion or mystique. Keep up your great work. I followed almost all your videos and will be buying your courses. I hope to participate in one of your workshops one day. By the way, congratulations with your massive weight loss as well. How did you do that?
Thank you Anthony Fong The weight loss is basically simple. I eat less and exercise more ...
Thanks Mike. Your a great teacher and rekindled my hobby! :)
:-)
Thanks, Mike - good one!
Great explained ,i also noticed your keyboard has colored buttons, thoese are helping or they are personal preference?
Thank you.
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Great video..mike....thanks...
Excellent tutorial on histograms! Now, instead of relying on a dimly-lit LCD screen or a flashing indicator in my EVF... I can check out my histogram in the camera image information and know if I have a good 'normal' exposure. This will help in setting up my "middle" exposure for bracketed exposures, too!
Thank you folkrockr - you got it nailed :-)
I'm addicted to this channel
thanks Mike .. I'm new to your videos and for that matter a "proper" (SONY A7) non point and shoot camera.
This video has been a great help!

great vid man
very helpful!!!!!!
Thank you - MIKE
Best explanation ever!
Thank you so much Mike !! Did you a tutorial correcting a picture from the histogram?
No worries. No I didn't, I just used this as an example of what shape the histogram for this shot should be... MIKE
What a pity because you explain topics very clairly. I hope you decide to teach how to correct the unbalanced image with Photoshop, Lightroom or even better with Capture One.
