    About this video: Home Depot has a bunch of new inventory! Spring flowering shrubs like flowering quince, lilac, Azaleas, and Rhododendron. Many new evergreens such as Holly, Arborvitae, Juniper, and Golden Euonymus! Considering a living fence or privacy hedging, and aren't sure about the difference between a green giant arborvitae, or a emerald green arborvitae? check out my comparison in this video. Come along with me while we shop and I share some tips about trees, shrubs, and evergreens. Steph, this is the perfect video for me today! It's cold and rainy out. I'm just hanging out at home with low motivation sipping my tea on the couch and "shopping" with you! I have now added a pieris to my list for this season. The ones you showed in your garden in your last video were gorgeous!

    I love your big box store videos. I live in CT and my stores have a similar selection and I’ve purchased quite a few things after watching your videos - I wish there was a way for you to get commission 😊. Your descriptions are fantastic and I love how you add your experience growing each variety. I’ll be heading out to Home Depot this weekend to check out some of these varieties.

    Oh Steph i just want to thank you for sharing this with us. I really enjoy all your walk throughs. You always give great information about everything you show us. I would love to get an crabapple tree. They are so very beautiful. I have alot of redbud trees, A sweet neighbor gave me 2 little redbud tree years ago. They have seeded their self back all over my yard. We call it redbud ally. They are in full bloom where i live in ne Oklahoma. They are very special to me also cause the neighbor that gave them to me her and her husband got murdered years ago, their daughter and son in law found them on Christmas day. It was horrible. They had their funeral at the high school in the town we live at. Their daughter and son-in-law both were techers at the high school. Their daughter quit working as a teacher and went in to nursing. Poor baby just couldnt face all the kids and teachers, because probably question her to death about her parents murders. Her husband still works at the highschool. They bever did really find out who killed them, or why. They were the nicest couple.❤❤

    A little info about Japanese sky pencil hollies. According to the NC State Extension Service, they don't perform very well in the heat and humidity of zones 8 and 9. They sure did poorly in the sun by my retaining wall. (I'm in zone 8b. This year the deer have been nibbling on a sky pencil holly I have planted in a container in my backyard. Just thought I'd share my experience with the hollies.

    Another great video! Quick question, I picked up some bare root clematis, peony and liatris from Walmart after I saw your video. I'm zone 5b (Midwest) and our fear of frost hasn't passed yet. When is the best time to get these in the ground? It seems everywhere I read has slightly different instructions. Thank you!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi there! If your ground is workable and things have started to warm up a little where you are, you can plant them. As they are perennials, they are pretty hardy. If you want to wait a few more weeks, you can do that too. I know for me its still pretty chilly outside most days so its not so comfortable to be outside planting. To hold them over for a few more weeks, just keep them dark and cool. In closed paper bag in a garage or basement should be just fine, until you get them planted. But you do not have to wait until your last frost to plant out bare root perennials. Hope this helps. Happy gardening! 🌱

      Hello! Yes, absolutely. My videos include whatever is coming in at that time. Now they are beginning to receive trees, evergreens, shrubs, and some earlier season perennials, and dormant bare root roses etc. Soon most of the other perennials will begin rolling in, including Hosta. I'm sorry your still getting snow in spring. That's never fun. We've had March showers, and now April showers. Non stop rain. Hopefully spring weather arrives for us both soon.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi There! Yes, you can grow shrubs in containers. Just be sure to have proper drainage. Also, if you are leaving them in the containers over winter, anything planted in the container should be at least 2 zones hardier than your growing zone. For example, if your growing zone is 6, the plant should be rated to a hardiness zone 4. Hope this helps!

    Hi Steph, we have many evergreens. Although the deer don’t bother them the rabbits do. I can’t believe how fast they can literally strip a barberry bushes. I guess I’ll dig them up and find a new home for them.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi there! I have some rabbit damage occasionally too. I agree they can also be destructive. They tend to go after shrubs and evergreens in winter when food is more scarce. Then once our flowers are in bloom, they turn to those. We're providing a buffet to our wildlife friends. You could try spraying them with invisible fence deer and rabbit. I find it works well for me in my garden🌱

    So, hydrengeas is no good investment?

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hello, Hydrangeas are a great investment. But you should purchase the ones that are sold at the nursery for the garden, not these florist type that you see around the holidays. The florist type hydrangeas (shown in the video) are not typically garden hardy, and are meant to be enjoyed the same as you would a bouquet of flowers, or a floral arrangement. You can compare these hydrangeas shown in the video to say a poinsettia that you purchase around the holidays. They are meant to be enjoyed for the season, but not hardy enough to be planted outside and perform well.

    Love, love, love it. Another fun shopping with Steph video! 🌸🪴. I have a confession to make. I bought three more packs of seeds because I don’t want to wait until next year to try them out 🙄. I am getting so out of control this year! The thing is I love to garden and I work hard so I’m not going to feel guilty about it. 💕. That said, how do you and your family eat your Delicata squash? That is one of the packets I ordered. 😁

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi Jillie! lol, we all fall victim to the excitement of a new garden season and try more seeds, I know I'm guilty of it. Delicata is delicious roasted. Its a soft skinned squash so you can wash it and prepare it to eat with the skin on. I usually wash it, slice it in rounds, cut out the seeds then I roast it. To roast I drizzle the squash with olive oil, season with sea salt, and black pepper, sometimes garlic or onion powder. Then roast at 375-400 degrees for about 25-30 minutes, depends how hot your oven runs. Its delicious and so sweet! it starts to caramelize which is when you get the sweetness. I hope you enjoy it!
