  • "Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life."
In honor of the new musical movie adaptation coming out, here's my tribute to the 1985 adaptation. I tried to cover Celie's relationship with her sister, Mister, and Shug.
For those of you who have never seen the movie or read the book it's based on, here's a brief synopsis:
Celie is a poor black teenage girl in Georgia when we first meet her. She's been abused by her father for years. Her only comfort is her sister, Nettie. Then Celie is essentially sold off to "Mister" - a much older man who becomes her husband (and essentially another jailer and abuser). Mister lusts after Nettie and hurts Celie. When Nettie refuses his advances, he separates the two sisters. Years pass and Mister spends his time obsessing over a local jazz singer, Shug Avery. When Celie meets Shug, she is not jealous, but in love. Shug teaches her how to appreciate life and herself.
The movie, musical, and book The Color Purple (by Alice Walker) have all inspired people for generations. The book has a special place in the history of Black Feminist Literature and in LGBTQ Literature. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg (an interesting choice). It was one of his first "serious" films and remains one of his most underrated masterpieces.
