The biggest issue i have with these hairdressers who like to braid your hair too tight is, when you repeatedly tell them its too tight they continue to braid tight...smh
I got mine braided for the first time by 2 people pulling way too much simultaneously. I have a really high pain tolerance and they got my eyes watering.
@@kathygetsmewetter. If your scalp is bunched up or torn then it is too tight! End of story. Pain is a sign that damage is being done to your scalp/hair. It is NOT normal.
I agree! Especially when they see you have nice hair and/or long hair or just don’t like you for whatever reason! They’ll be jealous af doing your hair and have you wondering “why isn’t my hair growing anymore!? Why does my hair keep breaking!? Why do I have patches missing!? Is my hair thinning?!”
Me and you sis. Last time I got my hair braided by a "so called hairdresser" I went home and pulled every one out. And that was yeeeeears ago. I've been doing my own hair since
She forgot this one......if you sneeze and something rips!!! 😂😂😂 If your scalp is separating.....it's time to separate yourself from whoever braided your hair!
Boundaries. This article reminded me that my boundaries need to be checked in this area. A person should not experience pain and injuries from getting their hair styled especially when you let the stylist know it’s hurting. It’s like abuse; allowing someone to abuse you then you pay them. This has helped me tremendously! I’m done with it. I’ll do it myself or find a respectable stylist. Thank you for the reminder.
Many years ago, a braider braided my hair tight like this. She said it would loosen a little the next day. I had a headache and scalp irritation all that day. I put Vaseline on it. Next day, I took them out. I NEVER let anyone else braid my hair. I learned how and did it myself whenever I wanted braids from then on. I hate seeing tight braids on little girls!
Seeing this reawakened a lot of buried childhood trauma. When I saw those photos I legit almost cried. I thought no one else understood. It felt like I was being tortured, and honestly I might as well have been.
That last one had to be intentional. Why would you continue with that much tension after you see scalp puckering, instead of taking it out and starting over? Ain’t no way she could’ve done my entire head like that. Idk how the client even sat through that nightmare!
Some girls are ok with suffering for a style. My sis is the same way, and the damage she’s gotten from these ultra right styles is brutal. Red bumps on her scalp, edges are gone, etc. Just awful.
It was my first cousin that did me like that. Once I had a mirror view the next day of the back, then I understand the “non-compliments” I got like. “Ohhh she sure braided your hair huh”
My cousin used to do my hair all the time when I was in school. And I remember bawling my eyes out while she was braiding them, and after they were finished it was still painful. Thankfully my mom's doing it from now on, and she switched to a style that doesn't require scalp braids.
I've never seen that before! My mother did hairdressing my entire childhood, and I never saw that. It truly speaks to my mother's skill, the way it shocked me that is.
exactly. i stopped pulling my hair into tight braids and ponytails when i saw chicks running around with the few edge strands they have left plastered down with half a jar of gel. no thanks!
The shag/boho/loose look is definitely in now that we're embracing our natural beauty more. I LOVE it! $25, 3 hours, and done! I can't understand why people pay $300+ to make their own hair fall out.
@@tashaysmith5640 Yep! But I can't let go of my afro yet. But I'll sholl throw some big parted crochet locks in it and call it a day for a few weeks! 😆

There is much to be said about a truly gifted braids technician. My braid technician knows how to secure beautiful braids without damaging my edges, follicles, or my scalp. She knows how to tuck my hair when I want a crazy colored style. She knows how to measure out the hair extensions so that the braids are uniformly the same size and not too heavy for a natural fall weather I wear it loose or a pony tail or whatever. And I never haggle her price. Finding a great technician is as taxing as finding the right hair products to use on my hair. So, PAY WUT YOU OWE! Braiding takes more than talent. Skill and experience is what separate the good ones from the rest.
Its impossible to maintain healthy hair with them. They lack patience and care for hair. Also if you notice they never have their own hair done always in hideous wigs. They are SO RUDE with ill attitudes. They dont know how to properly care for hair. I have to ask them to WET HAIR AND COMB FROM THE BOTTOM UP and be more gentle. We pay TOO MUCH MONEY TO BE TREATED LIKE CRAP. I believe they have contempt and resentment for us. I have found that since caring for and protecting my own hair my hair is now thicker with no bald spots and thinning and its 1 foot longer. As black women we just need to have PATIENCE and COMPASSION and learn to do our hair if we want long thicker hair.
As a hairdresser (not a braider), I’ve heard this from a few of my clients in the past. They’ve told me some of the awful treatment they’ve received from braiders in the past and a lot of these ladies just stopped trying to get their hair braided all together. They just stick with natural styles (which are way prettier in my opinion.. why try to ruin those gorgeous curls when you can just flaunt them?? 🤷🏼♀️) Hearing these complaints blows my mind though. I have always put myself in the clients shoes.. what would make me comfortable? How would I want my stylist to treat me? Not to mention, clients are literally wearing my art on their head EVERY WHERE THEY GO!! That’s MY name for the world to see! Also, they pay my bills, feed my kids, and keep gas in my damn car. Why in the world would I treat them like they are just a waste of time and energy? Not to mention, destroy their hair? It makes no sense to me.. As a stylist, it’s my job to help accent that persons natural beauty while also adding a glimpse of their personality into the mix. I’m doing everything I can to help not only my clients maintain healthy hair but also help them as an individual person.. Y’all know y’all don’t have to take that right?? And you shouldn’t. There are some amazing braiders out there who will treat you with respect and dignity. Not just a paycheck. And they are damn good at what they do! Don’t ever settle when you’re spending your hard earned money on something that could easily affect your life negatively. On another note, a lot of stylists also don’t spend too much time on their own hair 😂😂 I can explain this a little better. I do hair all day long. I love what I do. But the LAST thing I want to do is do my own. Yea.. I get it. People usually judge stylists (or in this case braiders) on their hairstyle. But I’m here to tell you, that’s not always the case. Think about it like food.. I’m not sure where y’all are from, but down here in the south, the BEST food you will ever eat in your life usually comes from hole in the wall places. The presentation might not be extremely well put together. But the minute you take a bite… who cares what it looks like when it tastes like heaven? Lol does that make sense? Anyway. I’m just saying don’t always judge a book by it’s cover but rather by the contents inside and the raving reviews for TONS of happy readers. Don’t settle!
Back when I used to get my hair permed ( 😫 ), I told a prospective new stylist my hair needed the "baby" perm and that it set completely in SEVEN MINUTES. She arrogantly said they left it in for 20 and, "we don't check." So guess who never touched MY hair?
If your combing your hair from the bottom up, WET ? You still have a lot to learn. My daughter has been braiding since she was 12. She washes and detangles hair b4 braiding because clients will come to her with a dirty bird nest. But will wash their feet b4 going to get a pedicure from Ming Lee. And she's still gonna talk about you to her girls in Korean.
The I didn't feel the tightness of the braids until half my head was done. Felt bad to ask my mom to redo it so I just went through the pain. Later my scalp started separating and I took it out immediately. Not going through it again

They were tight but didn’t hurt until after she had finished and my scalp became irritated. Since then only me, momma and sister touches my scalp and yes now has long locks
The (self explained) one left me with hearing loss. The “hairdresser” was discussing her break up. In the moments explaining to her colleague everything she went through with her man. I relived her anger & tumultuous fights she expressed whilst braiding my hair. At the end my scalp was literally pulsating. She ignored my pleas of being too tight. I regret not just walking out.
Watching because of tight braids….I’m about to rip these out. Funny it wasn’t tight when she was braiding it but now even 5 days later I feel scabs and I’m over it. $120 down the drain. 😢
I paid $180 for a short passion twist and I told the lady not to braid to tight. Now I have tension bumps which I rarely get. I’ve only had them in a week and I’m about to take them out

Thing is you gotta stand up for yourself and stop them where they start with them tight braids. Its your scalp/hair, you have every right to say uhuh thats too tight!
RIGHT!!!!!! I told my cousin immediately while she was putting a weave in my head and (mind you this is for HS Graduation) my mom told her not to worry over it and thought I was complaining over nothing and i'm like "No. It's too tight." Like my scalp felt like it was folding, and my cousin saw me flinching. But mom stayed silent after that. People should stand for themselves always cuz no one else will.
Having bumps on those heads when you have braids hurt, this has got to be illegal cause that’s got to be hurting so much, That is exactly why I don’t want to go to the hair salon because of how they tighten it so hard so bumps are shown and you can’t move you neck, In conclusion: this is relatable do your own hair and never go to any hair salons again.
Had a friend encourage me to let this last braids her hair and my hair when I was in high school. She braided my hair WAY too tight! It began scabbing/blistering in the middle part. Thank GOD it grew back but I learned a hard lesson that week. Had to take them all down even though I paid my hard earned money for that style.
When I was a kid my aunt braided my hair it was her first and last time doing it. The whole time she was braiding it I cried, it hurt so bad and I was confused asf bc my mom braided my hair all the time and the most I did was cringe at some spots (esp the top of my head) only bc she pressed a lil hard. My aunt ignored my cries, even chastised me for wetting my pants bc it hurt THAT bad. I got home still in tears and my scalp was red and oozing blood in some spots. When I say my mama called and cussed her THEE FUCK out…An experience I’ll never forget.

Thank you for doing this. So many young ladies are out her are causing self-inflicted alopecia or inflicted alopecia to their daughters. The rule should be, if it's too tight, it ain't right. Request for loser braids or loc retwist, if they can't....leave. Leave those rubberbands alone.
OUCH! I got a hair weave in 1985. It was so tight, I thought of going to the Emergency room to have it removed. I was up, all night, suffering. I've been growing my beautiful, dread's for almost 24 year's. Best relationship I've ever had with my hair.🕊
Glad you like your current hairstyle! I once got a weave too.........never again. It was for prom and i didn't know weave could hurt more than regular box braids. I ended up taking them out after graduation which was like a week after and it was so tight it pulled out my hair at the root. I had a huge bald spot in the back of my head and wore head wraps for a good 1.5 years during college. The fact that you were thinking about going to the emergency room is wild.
my whole childhood was full of this. feeling like i was going to pass out while getting braids. pain when i blinked. not being able to lay on a pillow. lots of follicles at the base of the braids🤦🏾♀️ me and my babies have locs because of this

I stopped using those types of extensions for these very reasons. One time, my head hurt so bad I got up at 3 am to eat coz I wanted to take my mind off the pain. Some of these hairdressers get offended when you cry out in pain as they pull your hair like there is no freaking tomorrow. I am tenderheaded and can't deal with the pain that comes with having type 4C natural hair so I have locked my hair and I am free from these sadists.

I started braiding my own hair after a painful hairdo. It felt like my head was on fire. When I took the braids out the following day, a chuck of my own hair fell off. After 15 years, the bald spot is still present. Never again.
I don’t even let people play in my hair. My hair is so healthy all I do is wash it MOISTURIZE & leave it alone. I do braids but very rarely & NEVER so tight!
I put 8 faux locs in my hair yesterday and then changed my mind. I swear it took hours to remove just those 8 and I lost hair. I’m glad I didn’t do my whole head.
Sometimes we ask the lady not to braid it too tight but they never listen. That's why I started doing my own hair. Coz the people who actually knows how to properly take care of my hair have very high prices that I can't afford rn
When i was little, a cousin did tiny cornrows on my hair, i kept telling her it was hurt but she wasn't listening. By the time i got home, i was having big blisters all around my head😢. I cried all night because i couldn't sleep. At 2 am, my mother took the hair down. Since then, i refuse to have just anybody do my hair😅
as a native who had their hair braided for powwows often, even a day in french braids hurts after taking them out. i'm so sorry to the people who go through so much pain on the daily.
one doesn't necessarily need to wear weave to have this happen to them, people just have to speak up but also reputable stylists should know not do styles extremely tight

If it hurts its way too tight. I heard one black girl say she got her hair braided and when she went to wash her face even touching her forehead hurt! Thats sooo bad esp because those follicles can eventually be damaged FOREVER. Thats where the edges went!

I think that time my parents braided my hair, it was the exact time where my scalp was very sensitive and hurted me so badly. Since my parent stopped, it got better now. I massaged a lot my head to get healed from this sort of scalp trauma. When it's very tight, you will see problems, because it causes immediate reactions like severe acne where it hurts you.
Yeah I have permanent disfigurement in the back of my head because when I was younger I was forced to keep the hairstyles in even when my scalp was folded up.
I had a lady who told me braiding it tight makes it last longer and on top of that I asked her not to braid my hair tight. I said yes I know I have mad thick hair but that doesn’t mean my scalp doesn’t hurt she giggled and combed my hair as if what I was saying to her was a joke. I stayed away from her for 5 months. I went back months later a bad mistake which I’ll never ever deal with her again
I'm white and my black friend braided my hair like that white girl except with 3 or 4 braids and it was really cute but it HURT! She told me she didn't braid them tight but after a few hours my head was THROBBING and I had a massive headache. I had tried to keep them in over night for school but I couldn't sleep my head hurt too much. It gave me a whole new respect for black people. Y'all have the pain tolerance of a warrior! 😅❤
She definitely did it too tight. It should be a lil tight so the braids stay in if your hair is a silkier thinner texture…but not to th point of throbbing.
I one time wore the same braided hairstyle for a year, only taking them out to sleep and then retied my hair in the morning. I spent 1 full day with untied hair, woke up 2nd day with THE headache of a lifetime lasting 3 more days. And for at least a whole year after, my hair couldn’t be braided without feeling a headache

The biggest issue i have with these hairdressers who like to braid your hair too tight is, when you repeatedly tell them its too tight they continue to braid tight...smh
Fr like they always say in there mind “I know ow what I’m doing bitch”
"It's gotta be tight else they'll fall out/be ugly"

i hate when your scalp looks like this and they say u tender headed, its not tight.

You’re right!!! 😖
I am actually tender headed and my scalp looks something like that and the hair don’t be tight sometimes
@@kathygetsmewetter. If your scalp is bunched up or torn then it is too tight! End of story. Pain is a sign that damage is being done to your scalp/hair. It is NOT normal.

Excellent advice!!! Ive seen these too tight braids. They're usually done under the guise of making the style last longer.
And that’s why I do my own hair, I’m convinced a lot of these hairstylist do stuff like that on purpose

I've been doing my own hair since
I do too like why dont you want me to have edges

Your scalp thank U
And those tons of beads press on the scalp when they sleep. Can't be good
Seeing this reawakened a lot of buried childhood trauma.

Just awful.
@@tiahnarodriguez3809 Yeah I hate the saying "pretty hurts" because you shouldn't have to go through pain to be pretty!

Yes..same
Same! It’s taken me a couple of years to really perfect it but it was seriously worth it😌and honestly really fun!
Yep.
This video makes me want to learn how to braid/passion twist my own hair.
See this is why i do my own hair, it might not be as "neat" but at least it's protective
exactly. i stopped pulling my hair into tight braids and ponytails when i saw chicks running around with the few edge strands they have left plastered down with half a jar of gel. no thanks!

Your mom was mad at you or the braider?
@@Serenityblu23 the braider prolly
And when we ask NICELY we're disrespectful smh
How do people sit through that after the first braid I’m either crying or ready to fight
The I didn't feel the tightness of the braids until half my head was done. Felt bad to ask my mom to redo it so I just went through the pain. Later my scalp started separating and I took it out immediately. Not going through it again

I paid $180 for a short passion twist and I told the lady not to braid to tight. Now I have tension bumps which I rarely get. I’ve only had them in a week and I’m about to take them out

That last one was straight up pulling her skin apart 😭
Thing is you gotta stand up for yourself and stop them where they start with them tight braids. Its your scalp/hair, you have every right to say uhuh thats too tight!

I stopped using those types of extensions for these very reasons. One time, my head hurt so bad I got up at 3 am to eat coz I wanted to take my mind off the pain. Some of these hairdressers get offended when you cry out in pain as they pull your hair like there is no freaking tomorrow.
That's why I tell them before they start braiding my hair don't do them tight

She definitely did it too tight. It should be a lil tight so the braids stay in if your hair is a silkier thinner texture…but not to th point of throbbing.
I one time wore the same braided hairstyle for a year, only taking them out to sleep and then retied my hair in the morning.
