My father stuck with his traditional Chinese diet that he grew up on. He didn’t drink green tea but he drank black tea and coffee daily and lived to age 94 before passing away. My mother (also Chinese) loved the western diet and indulged in it. Pizza, spaghetti, fried chicken, fast food… she loved them all! She passed away at age 60 from complications from type 2 diabetes! I’m learning the lessons from the differences between my two parents and trying to age gracefully and painlessly by eating better and living a healthier lifestyle. I learn a great deal from watching Dr. Li and am grateful he shares his knowledge and wisdom with us!!!🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️

@@user-uy8nw9zm6b Hi! Yes! My dad only ate white rice because that’s what he grew up eating. Never brown rice. Aside from the need to wear glasses, he wasn’t on any medication at all! His diet was quite simple. With the exception of breakfast, when he used to eat a fried runny egg (I hated that as a child!) with a slice of buttered toast (white bread), every meal always consisted of rice, vegetables and meat or fish. In the late afternoon, he would have his cup of coffee and a little something sweet like a cookie or a Chinese bun of some sort, but nothing too heavy. Dinner was the same, rice, veggies and meat or fish. Most meals seemed to include ginger, garlic, scallions and soy sauce and occasionally fermented soybean paste in their preparation. He never ate dessert. His dessert was a peeled orange or some other type of fruit about an hour after dinner (after we had cleared and washed the dishes). I can’t say for sure that this is a standard Cantonese diet (my dad was originally from a village just outside of today’s Guangzhou, China) but it was the way he liked to eat. Whether it’s good genetics on his side or his lifestyle, he managed to live a long and happy life! I can only hope to do the same!
P.S. I should have clarified… we were a poor Chinese immigrant family that fled communist China and went to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in the 1960’s and naturalized to Canadian citizenship in the 1970’s. The population back then was predominantly Scots-Irish or Caucasian, unlike today’s metropolitan melting pot. Being Chinese then was definitely a minority and so the food exposure back then was very much Western European influenced. That’s why I grew up on Oscar Meyer Bologna lunch sandwiches. 🥪😆

It sounds like your dad also ate very well, eating clean whole foods from a garden, free from pesticides and sprays. It’s wonderful he enjoyed a long, happy life too! Everyone loves Mac n’ cheese and I suppose a lifetime of eating it could contribute to heart problems but I’m no expert, lol! I hope you will inherit from your dad the ability to enjoy a happy and healthy long life too!🙏👍😃

      @@user-uy8nw9zm6b I appreciate your reply!
Because most Asians are lactose intolerant, not many can eat dairy. That said, I’ve read before that there are many sources of calcium other than dairy. If I remember correctly, broccoli has more calcium than milk and our family has always eaten a lot of broccoli 🥦 (think Chinese beef and broccoli, homemade minus the thick sweet brown sauce). Younger generations like me (well, I’m nearing 60 so maybe my generation isn’t that young!) have trained ourselves to consume dairy because of the western diet. I always take cream with my coffee and tea and eat cheese all the time… on sandwiches, sprinkled on top of salads, and so on.

@@user-uy8nw9zm6b Growing up in Canada, my parents cooked with corn oil or canola oil because that’s what was mostly available for purchase on the store shelves but we had Italian neighbors who turned us on to olive oil early on! My dad loved to shell and eat roasted peanuts for snacks but my mom preferred the sweet peanut butter and jelly from a jar on white bread. Again, the big difference between my parents and probably how my mother ended up diabetic.
I’ve noticed with age, I’ve become extremely gluten sensitive, something that wasn’t an issue when I was young. As a result, I opt for gluten free foods now. And I have for the most part cut out rice from my diet and substituted it with quinoa. When I do buy rice, I make sure it doesn’t come from China. Whether or not China is exporting “fake rice” made of plastic pellets or not, I won’t be their guinea pig. There’s enough plastic everywhere making its way into our food chain, I don’t need to purposefully eat it!

How can you live without Italian pasta dishes, with all the lovely sauces which I am in love them. A Sicilian ma introduced all those mouth watering pastas to me which I try cooking myself. There was one particular religious affiliated pasta cooked with passata, fish and topped with some bread fried with sugar if I am not mistaken, I even devoured that pasta too.

I knew I was doing something good.
I have been drinking two mugs of hot chocolate a day for ten or more years.
I know cacao crosses the blood brain barrier.
Before they could hardly take blood for analisis sometimes.
Since I have been drinking cacao people marvell at sight of the bright red colour of my blood and the flow as well.
I cut my tumb a few times by mistake in the same place.
    It is amazing.
    Thank you doctor.
Starting my day on high note.
By the way I also get more oxygen in the blood.
Two years ago I went to Machu Pichu where the altitude is 4000 m or more.
A lot of people had trouble breething.
Not only I was alright but in my day off I went to the Rainbow Mt at 5100 m.
    I was also fine.
Hardest thing I have ever done as the air pressure makes it difficult to climb.

The in-house Target cocoa powder meets the California heavy metal standard (very low) and had about 5x polyphenols of the 2 major brands in the US. For chow bars get Sam’s Favorite 75% at Walmart, very clean.

How would you make that hot chocolate. I don’t drink dairy milk. Would it be okay to make with oat milk? And why not use cacao nibs instead of chocolate? I’d love the answers to these questions please.

Chocolate- gradually develop a taste for darker chocolate up to 100% cocoa solids. It’s too bitter at first so go slow from 60% on up.
Another form is cocoa nibs. It’s a better form, but again an acquired taste.

One other thing not mentioned here, always wait until the water the tea is made with is no hotter than 180° as tea in boiling water kills the polyphenols. I'm British born but have lived in the US since age 2 (a military brat). If there are any doubts in my claim, do the research and find out for yourself.
I've also read that Green Tea is very good for BPH. Tea must be good for longevity or all the monks in Asia would not be drinking it for generations.

      @@EagleArrowStrange kettle. Why 122°F?

    • @MisterHowzat
      @MisterHowzat Před 2 měsíci +5

      180°F is 82°C
All the green teas I've ever bought came with instructions which included what temperature water to use. I've seen 80°C and also 95°C. So, best to just follow the instructions.
And be aware that when hot water is poured it cools by quite a few degrees. When I pour hot water into a cup immediately after it boils, the stream of hot water is at 96-97°. If I control the stream so that it's very thin, it can be about 95° when it reaches the cup. That's just the right temperature for the Ito En green tea and matcha tea bag that I'm currently enjoying. Of course, the water temperature will also depend on ambient temperature and how long the stream of water is.

@@MisterHowzatceramic cups absorb a lot of heat
I use an electric pot that shuts off just short of boiling.
I let it sit for a minute before I pour it. Then let the cup absorb some of the heat before I put the tea bags into the cup.
Sometimes I pour the water into a second cup to cool it off even more.

I grew up drinking milk and sugar in my tea, cocoa and coffee. I tried to cut it out and did not like it. I can only drink like the Camomile, or those kinds without sugar and milk. I am now making another tea and drinking without milk or sugar...soursop leaves mixed with mango leaves and bay leaves. I am loving it.
