Elvis was raised in the ghetto, attended predominantly black churches growing up ( his gospel songs are amazing). Elvis never forgot his roots.
He was, and will always be, the King. He crossed all genres with ease and grace. His catalog is vast and varied. Enjoy the ride. You won't regret it.

This was our music. We were totally cool! ;o) We were cooler than any other generation, and we had the best music in the universe! Nobody will ever be able to top our music! 60s and 70s. No fancy editing abilities, just pure talent. We prided ourselves in being unique and creative. Gen Z wants one gender and for everyone to be spoon-fed their opinions. To learn more about Elvis’ background, check out “Elvis Presley and the Black Community- that echo will never die”. Elvis was born and raised I poor, primarily black neighborhoods in Tupelo, Mississippi & later in Memphis, Tennessee. He naturally absorbed some of that culture, especially its music. He sang Gospel at a Black Baptist church in Memphis. There are 2 parts the the video. The part one can be easily searched. The Part 2 video is best viewed by searching for the post from Shawn & Mel since it has no interruptions. Also check out “If I can Dream” which was his tribute to MLK.

This was my generation. Elvis was raised dirt dirt poor, His neighborhood was predominantly black. Check out Kentucky Rain, Suspicious Minds. It was hard to pin his music down into any specific genre. His hated racism. When the biggest venue of the time asked him to sing there, they said, you can leave the black back up singers home…he refused saying, if they’re not coming, I’m not coming. They relented, and he drove around that stadium with his back up singers sitting proudly in that car with him. His back-up singers speak of him very highly saying they were treated with respect and got paid very well, He is a legend. And he was a legend in his time. He served in the army at a critical time in his career when it was just taking off, but he insisted on serving. His manager didn’t want him to…afraid he would become irrelevant being away for such a long time. But, of course, he came back stronger than ever. When Martin Luther King was shot, he grieved. And the song, “If I can Dream.” Was born. If you haven’t heard that tribute, you must. New sub here.

His first love Gospel, but he was called the King of Rock&Roll, because of his early appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1956, when he was 21 yrs old and R&R was new. He had the looks, voice, moments which some adults considered vulgar back then. He acted in 31 movies from 1956 - 1969. He was drafted into the Army and served from 1958-1960. He died at age 42 in 1977 and a record number of flowers were sold. He lived at his home Graceland, in Memphis TENN. Elvis was born in 1935, poor and grew up in a black neighborhood, and went often to a black church he burst on the scene in 1956, I was a 12 year old and my father thought he was two sexy for me to watch on tv because he was shaking his legs and hips. they even evidentially only showed him from the waist up on TV. To see his struggles and contribution to a racist society please watch, "Elvis Presley and the Black Community. " the echo will never die. He changed music and culture. Thanks so much for your reaction to Elvis (Jan. 8, 1935-Aug. 16, 1977).
Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (czcams.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/video.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

Elvis was an icon of the YOUTH REVOLUTION of the 1950s while also being a segregation-busting rebel musician that came up through the black and white churches in the segregated South DURING the Great Depression through the Civil Rights era. Grew up DIRT POOR, in a home with NO RUNNING WATER and NO ELECTRICITY. He was a CULTURAL ICON, a philanthropist who is credited for ending Polio, supported Dr Martin Luther King, and many other black-owned organizations.
The people THAT KNEW ELVIS PERSONALLY of course KNEW THE TRUTH about Elvis, and what made him SO DIFFERENT from other musicians of the day.
Elvis cracked open the segregated racist radio stations, music venues and eventually the record companies! Black songwriters would get three new income channels that would exist solely because Elvis covered their song:
    1. song rights.
    2. royalty checks in the mail.
    3. Their own album sales would skyrocket.
THIS is how Elvis began to tear down racist barriers in the music business and he legit opened it up to everyone. And the corruption of the record CEOs were so bad... even black record execs were ripping off black artists.
RECOMMENDATIONS that would be GREAT for you to react to and learn about his lesser knows SOCIAL IMPACT which was bigger than any other artist in history.
#1 Recommendation: Elvis and the Black Community. A great collaboration of interviews by legends and historic figures in the black community discussing Elvis. czcams.com/video/xd1pXw1DmsA/video.html
#2 Recommendation: Just as important to watch. An amazing HISTORICAL interview with one of Elvis' first close friends, a black gentleman by the name of SAM BELL. Sadly Sam died soon after this interview. You'll learn more by watching this one video than ANY ONE HOUR HISTORY CLASS you ever attended. The beginning of the new ELVIS MOVIE came from this very interview about LIFE in one of the first mixed (predominantly black) communities in America. Black and white boys playing TOGETHER -- didn't happen down in the segregated South in the 1930s and 40s -- it was very dangerous to life and limb for kids or adults. You don't want to miss this if you want the actual truth: czcams.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/video.html&t=
#3 Recommendation: "King of Kindness" czcams.com/video/CrJ1c9tm-C0/video.html Elvis' work ending Polio when noone else was breaking through to US young people, the creation and building of the legendary St Judes Hospital, and other heartfelt social work and benefits work.
#4 Recommendation: "200 Cadillacs" czcams.com/video/KHd5mEfxXlg/video.html&t= Elvis' favorite car was a Cadillac. One dealer can vouch for some number between 150-200 Caddies that he bought for close friends, staff and even random people that he knew needed a car, but couldnt afford one.

Elvis started it all. He was the first megastar. People called him the king but his friends called him E. A nickname he was given as a boy while living in a housing project. It had 4 homes for white families and the rest were for black families. He hung out with 5 other kids and the fancied themselves a gang. Riding bikes with 1 strap not buttoned on their overalls and popping wheelies to show off the girls. Silly little boys is what they were but they were friends and they called him E. He kept it even when he moved to Memphis from Tupalo. Elvis believed there was 1 king. Jesus. If you listen to his friend from Tupalo speak on Elvis you hear a love for him. Their families loved him. His family loved them and I guess Elvis's mom made the best Kool aid lol

Elvis is known for putting a lot of emotion into his songs and this song was originally given to Sammy Davis Jr. who turned it down instead suggesting it be given to Elvis because Elvis lived this life and could sing it with an authenticity and authority that Davis could not which I feel is definitely conveyed. Elvis was and is still one of the biggest cultural influencers; you would be surprised by the things he started that continue today. I think everyone, especially younger people, are better for knowing what Elvis was truly about and you'll understand why he is so important.

Next song: IF I CAN DREAM. czcams.com/video/u-pP_dCenJA/video.html
A real special one. THE ONE SONG THAT WILL TALK TO GENERATIONS of YOUNG PEOPLE for THOUSANDS OF YEARS to come. Imagine the 1960s, race riots. JFK Shot Dead. RFK Shot Dead. Malcolm X Shot Dead. Dr Martin Luther King shot dead. In particular, the MLK and RFK assassinations affected him beyond repair and push him into action. There were MANY ROADBLOCKS to get this song to the public square.
NBC executives said NO. Elvis' manager Tom Parker said NO. Sponsors and advertisers over at NBC who was supporting this TV special said NO. NOONE wanted to touch the subject of racism and human unkindness, but Elvis. In the end, Elvis won and got his chance, so he placed the song AT THE END of his show, right where they wanted him to finish with a Christmas song. Elvis had already agreed to the Christmas song. He was a deeply religious man, and would spread the Word daily.
Soon as Elvis heard this song he said he was placing it at the end, the grand finale. Everyone was pissed. Except for Elvis. He changed the world. When it mattered, when IT REALLY MATTERED, Elvis did big things to bring people together. Typically he did these things behind the scenes, he never asked for praise for any of his generous deeds, which were MANY.
But THIS TIME... for the first time he wanted to lend his voice PUBLICALLY. The nation was in mourning and fighting. Elvis saw a vision of peace and inclusion that very very few other people were seeing at the time. We are in NEED of his voice and vision TODAY.

Elvis is perhaps the biggest cultural icon as well as most famous celebrity ever. Anything you think Elvis resembles I can almost guarantee he came 1st & they copied him. Elvis did not write his songs but he did most of his arrangements especially when he was older. He did get much of his inspiration & influences from gospel & "black" music..a term I personally don't care for as good music should transcend racism & bring people together. He brought his own style & talents to popularized a style of music that was VERY controversial when he performed in the 50s. Elvis opened doors for African American musicians to be commercially successful at a time when segregation was normal & expected in pretty much everything. Anytime someone is that successful, talented, good looking, etc...there are going to be haters & lies will be spread. If you choose to go down the Elvis rabbit hole you'll find out he was not perfect but he was most definitely not racist, did not "steal" anyone's songs, etc. In fact, many artists careers were boosted in a big way when Elvis recorded their song. Fact is if you are a songwriter & you want to get paid you better hope someone records your song & it sells. Elvis is still selling today so I think that speaks for itself. Elvis fans are passionate & loyal so you'll most likely get a lot of views. But he really was an amazing performer, with an amazing voice & generally sounded better live with no auto tune or fancy tricks. Just pure talent with some of the best back up singers & band members of his time. You'd be missing out if you don't check out more..even if it's not a deep dive.

Genres are a new thing since Elvis lived, people did not limit themselves back then to one style. He sang this song because he grew up so poor, dirt poor, that the project kids were sorry for him. His agent thought this song would be career suicide, but Elvis insisted, he knew the song raised an important issue. He sang rock&roll, ballads, a german oomp pah song, played piano at home to sing gospel to, he loved gospel since childhood. You will need to explore his catalogue and decide which category they all fit in for yourself. His other controversial song was If I Can Dream. He was troubled by recent tragic events, asked a writer to write him a song, told the writer what to include, and performed the resultant song, over the colonel's objections. Elvis refused to perform in a stadium, unless his back-up singers were allowed to enter through the front gate, like everyone else, he had them ride in, in an open topped limo..

Elvis is Number 1 in any rankings. He lead the way in 1956 with his first record” That’s alright Mama” which was like nothing else of that era. In a time of segregation, he brought black and white music together. He performed with black backing singers, he got cancelled by the. Establishment for being too “vulgar” in his movements whilst singing. He chose songs written by black artists and made sure they got the credit for it on the record sleeves. Songwriters knew if he sang one of their songs it would be a hit. He was called the “King of Rock and Roll” a title he disliked , saying “ the only King is Jesus Christ” He always included gospel songs in his concerts as that was his personal favourite genre. He has a global fan base, with fanclubs in Australia, Great Britain, Europe, Japan, India as well as America. In fact, he had more Number 1 records abroad than in the States. 👌🕺💕

The King of Rock and Roll. Elvis swing in several genres: Gospel, Country, Rockabilly, Rock and Roll and R 6 B.
To learn more about who Elvis was , want th the video of "Elvis and the Black Community". ( 2 parts)
Songs: If I Can Dream ( A tribute to MLK 1968 Comeback Special)
Hound Dog. ( Video 1956 Ed Sullivan Show)
What Now My Love ( 1973 Aloha Concert, the rehersal)
    Jail House Rock ( video)I
    You Gave Me a Mountain
    ( 1973 Aloha concert)
Just Pretend ( 1973 Vegas concert)
    Can't Help Falling in Love
Trouble ( video from movie King Creole)
Tryin' to Get to You ( 1968 Comeback Special)
    Suspicious Minds ( 1970
Vegas concert) shows you how he liked to play around and entertain.
There is a little bit of
genre in the songs I've listed.
In 1973 ( Aloha from Hawaii concert) Elvis was the first person to do a live televised via Satellite concert that was seen in 46 countries by over 1.5 billion ppl. worldwide. It had never been done before. It was a brilliant move. ( Because of some unfortunate circumstances) , Elvis was never able to tour in other countries so that's the reason for the satellite concert.
Elvis didn't write his own songs ( he couldn't read music), but rather covered those songs that had special meaning to him. He always put his touch to the music to make it in his style, and has a playlist that is the length of his arm.
He was big into Karate and designed his one piece outfits to resemble those of the sport. As time went on he added the bling and a cape.
Elvis was quite the entertainer and never took himself to seriously. He liked to joke and play around on stage.

This was from 1970 he didn't publicly say a lot about all the burning race and other issues at the time, but he certainly spoke through his music and in who he chose to have play with him and how he treated them. He was a pretty amazing figure. And CZcams has video all the way from when he first broke at the age of 20 years old in 1954, all the way up through this 1970 Vegas show which has a lot of Great Performances, and then a few years later all the way up to within seven weeks of his early death. So there is lots of Elvis to check out and it really is a fascinating journey because he was a global phenomenon. And it happened to him when he was so young.
For an incredibly powerful emotional performance that was the finale of his 1968 Comeback Special, another socially-conscious song, he chose to end the show with a dedication to Martin Luther King and also to just the insane strife that the country was going through at the time, If I Can Dream. He is in a white suit with a red tie to symbolize all the blood being lost in Vietnam, and his name is really huge behind him on the stage. It is one of the most emotional performances I've ever seen. It's one of his famous ones.
