The tomato is the edible, red fruit of Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant, which belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The species originated in Central and South America. The Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word "tomate", from which the English word tomato originates.
Numerous varieties of tomato are widely grown in temperate climates across the world, with greenhouses allowing its production throughout the year and in cooler areas. The plants typically grow to 1-3 meters (3-10 ft) in height and have a weak stem that often sprawls over the ground and vines over other plants. It is a perennial in its native habitat, and grown as an annual in temperate climates. An average common tomato weighs approximately 100 grams (4 oz).
Its use as a food originated in Mexico, and spread throughout the world following the Spanish colonization of the Americas. Tomato is consumed in diverse ways, including raw, as an ingredient in many dishes, sauces, salads, and drinks. While tomatoes are botanically berry-type fruits, they are considered culinary vegetables, being ingredients of savory meals.
Derivations
The Italian word, pomodoro (from pomo d'oro "apple of gold") was borrowed into Polish, and via Russian, into several other languages. Similarly, the now rare German term Paradeisapfel, which means "apple of paradise", is still heard in the form paradeiser in the Bavarian and Austrian dialects, and was borrowed into modern Hungarian, Slovenian and Serbian.
⟹ Black Beauty Tomato, Solanum lycopersicum Tomato Review
• ⟹ Black Beauty Tomato,...
We found waiting for the whole tomato to turn black made the skin thicker and the inside mushy. We pick our black beauties when they're half black/ half dark red. The skin is thin and tender, they slice beautifully for tomato sandwiches and they're kind of sweet. I eat these tomatoes plain with salt and pepper and they are so good. I'm not usually a fan of tomatoes unless they're in a salad or on bread or cooked into a sauce but these tomatoes I can eat like an apple. Black Beauties are the best-tasting tomatoes I've ever had and they make the best tomato sandwich I've ever tasted. The slight sweetness is delightful.
It was crossed with a wild tomato from South America that was black, the wild tomato was too bitter to eat but they wanted the color so they breed the wild tomato with other tomatoes that taste better.
do you know the name of that wild black tomato? im trying to get more wild tomato seeds thanks for watching : )
☼ Heirloom reviews ☼ it’s difficult to find a name, it was first crossed in Oregon state university so it’s only mentioned in scientific and peer reviewed journals. I believe it’s called Solanum lycopersicoides dunal.
ok i can get seeds for that! thanks a mill
☼ Heirloom reviews ☼ your welcome! I’m glad I could help. journal.ashspublications.org/content/133/2/262.full this is the journal that I found the name in. I just skimmed it but it might have more information if you’d like to read it. They also mention the Galapagos tomato but I believe you already have that one.
The same tomato was used top breed the Indigo Rose.
I thought Black Beauty was a cross from Bradley Gates at Wild Boar Farms and is a cross between Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye and Indigo Apple?
is it?
@@HeirloomReviews If it's the same Black Beauty i have, yes.... maybe yours is different?
i dont remember what i said in the video? refresh my memory
It's a Brad Gates breeding from other tomatoes.
Probably bred with black nightshade or something similar.
It was bred by Brad Gates at Wild Boar Farms
very special Tomato & fantastic Video! Happy Weekend :)
thanks for watching an have a wonderful weekend : )
The Black Beauty should STILL BE RED around the blossom tip
end when ripe. Like other black tomatoes, the sun makes them turn black.
If you take them in the house early, you must sit them where the sun hits or they will rot in 2 days!
Also, you must pick them when they are ripe! Wait two days and they're mushy>
Black Beauty tomatoes do not keep well at all,
BUT THEY ARE THE BEST TASTING TOMATO ON EARTH!!
Between Black Beauty and Cosmic Eclipse which is better tasting?
Cosmic Eclipse
@@HeirloomReviews Cool, thanks!
like merecido👍
DUDE!!!! FOCUS!!!
God.....
😂😂😂😂
Could seeds be saved from this tomato since it is hybridized? Also, what zone are you in? I've seen a number of your videos and I appreciate the reviews. I like finding people that might be in the same growing zone since I might have the same results. You sound like you could be in the same area anyway. Lol
Yes you can save seeds! i am in zone 6A north eastern PA in the mountains
@Heirloom Reviews ok awesome! Thanks. I'm zone 7. I just had a feeling. Lol
I have several on the plant still but they are so hard still. They are still a little green on the bottom. I am wondering if they will ripen before they go bad. Any idea?
Thanks
i had the same experience i finally picked them off the plant and let them ripen on the table for over a week! i did leave a few on the plant to see if they would ever ripen and the late blight started to get to them but they will turn red eventually
Are you growing this variety again? Oh, do you know if there are any determinate blue tomato varieties?
yes i am growing this again this year in super soil to see if i can develop the flavor better. the only blue tomato i know of is the blue bayou tomato but its indeterminate
☼ Heirloom reviews ☼ I've gotten seeds for Dancing With Smurfs, Indigo Rose, and Farenheight Blues. They are all indeterminate as well, which made me realize that I've never seen seed for blue determinate. I'm sure it will be produced one day, lol
2017 was the year for white flies. They were horrible in Michigan.
they always get me in late summer an totally kill the tomato plants
How many tomato species do you have? to trade?
many why?
tomato seeds
@@HeirloomReviews why ask why? Just answer the man's question prick...
@@ShinerBockGirlz that was funny. 😂
You should have done a bit of research before saying this is a hybrid, it is an heirloom. It is normally very sweet as well.
really? its been around for 75 years and has been handed down from generation to generation? wow learn something new every day
The watery-ness and lack-of-flavor might be from picking green and letting it ripen on the counter
how can get the seeds to portugal?
do you have native pepper or tomato seeds in your country you may want to trade? i like to grow plants i cant get in the US
yes we can trade if you want
@@josemiguelmartins1712 my need some seedd
STINK BUGS LOVE THIS PLANT LOL
there getting worse every year!
এটার বীজ কোথায় পাওয়া যাবে।
hello friend thanks for watching : )
He ask you where he can get the seed?
I can't watch,I compare vine ripen to others treated as close as controllable
No thumbs down but not voting
I grew the black beauty tomato this season along with the blue beauty both were average tasting and boring in my opinion !!
i totally agree! i would rather grow a big rainbow or box car willie but these make a great i catcher when your selling them as a vendor! do you make videos any more? i havent seen any of your newest video?
I miss the damn old you tube editor, since i dont use any fancy nosh posh phone or gadgets it becomes hard for me to upload stuff, but i did make a garden tour video that is my last posted video on my channel...
if you ever need help with anything just ask im pretty good with these programs!
thank you thats very kind :))
Oh no , I saw one video they say ripe it turns red
