Most common feeling when listening to Babymetal for the first time, "what the fuck is this? What the fuck was that? Why did I like it? I'm going to listen again", and then before you realise you've listened to shitloads of their songs. Then you just realise you like it because it's great and that's all that matters

That was my first reaction. Then after a few more times I realized I love this and more songs I uncovered, the more I loved it. They developed their own unique style within the metal scene with their amazing live performances and choreography. Su is also a great singer. Overall the mixture seems so weird on paper and at the first glance, but is easy to fall in love with as long as someone isn't elitist who gatekeeps himself from good stuff just because it doesn't fit his definition of what metal or music in general should be.
And worth remembering the Kami Band which is insane when it comes to their instrumentals.

Welcome to the Foxhole and BabyMetal journey 🦊🤘🔥
Always nice to see new reactors getting into this amazing group, trust me, there's no other group like them around, they're the reason you now know those female Japanese bands you mentioned because after BM came out they opened the gates for all those J-rock and J-metal bands, there was a before and after thanks to BM, they're still on top, their latest album called The Other One was chosen by Metal Hammer as one of the best Top 50 albums of this year (Number 2), surpassing any other Japanese band, also among Top 50 top album of the year for RockSound.
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal (kawaii means cute) mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal".
    They are:
*SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 25, she'll get 26 next Wednesday.
*MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 24.
*YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018.
*MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 20 and is the new official member since April 1st recently.
    None of them are related.
After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said.
    About this song:
Fans were enjoying and having so much fun watching this in every setlist of the recently finished World Tour.
Just like you noticed this was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 and 15 yo, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen", a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri).
"Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them.
During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance.
In summary, song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox.
"Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself.
When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it.
Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she used to sound check with this song before live concerts.
This is a song with the arrangements by YuppeMetal, he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drum section, another song that i recommend you for your own time if you want.
You can also enjoy the live version at Budokan 2014 with the original trio or live at Budokan 2021 with the mature trio and see the difference in SuMetal vocals, which btw she doesn't make those pig squeals or any screamo/growling, she can scream on certain parts thou but you'll notice. You will also enjoy the sound of the Kami Band, they're a set of professional musicians selected to backup the girls with the metal sound, during early era there were mainly a Japanese crew, and after 2019 they introduced a whole new crew from the West, we called them West Kami Band, they played during this recent World Tour.
    Next suggestion:
    - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official live, in case you get some block issues try using some filters.
I'm gonna try to leave more suggestions in my next comment if YT allows me to do it.
    See you next time. 🦊🤘🔥

Here's the list of live performance clips usually safe to reacts without any filters so you won't need to rely on live compilations, there might be some exceptions:
      - Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! live at Legend 1997, SuMetal 16th Birthday in 2013, they got MV of this and is fun, but live is a blast.
      czcams.com/video/LNFiDWJh2FA/video.html

      czcams.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/video.html
      - Megitsune, official MV is my first recommendation but is usually blocked if you don't put filters, so if you want live and safe to react, check it out Budokan 2014.
      czcams.com/video/dU38CYkpBvI/video.html
      - Akatsuki Unfinished Version, SuMetal solo again but with only a piano behind special performance at Legend 1997.
      czcams.com/video/nwsinmxTxbo/video.html

      czcams.com/video/BSjv9OYtWZ0/video.html
      - Uki Uki Midnight, this one is a follow up to Doki Doki Morning but way different sound, this is the PV, is super fun but the sound isn't so great but at least is live.

If you want better sound with the Kami Band, then live at Budokan 2014 it is.
      czcams.com/video/ESzY9dL613Q/video.html
      - Onedari Daisakusen, live at Legend 1997, this is a Black Babymetal song, is a subgroup with only YuiMetal and MoaMetal.

      - Kimi To Anime Ga Mitai - Answer For Animation With You, live at Budokan 2014, not sure if it's still safe, so try some filters, if is audio blocked try to mute or just cut the parts.
      czcams.com/video/M8FKumvh-w8/video.html
Here's a song you can find at Babymetal Reactor Resource (BMRR), a helpful place to get watermarked logo clips of the original live version to curve the annoying algo.
      - GJ! live at Wembley Arena 2016, another Black Babymetal song.
      czcams.com/video/Hg0Rylcg8F0/video.html
This is BMRR short vid to follow instructions and get the spreadsheet with the full list.

      - Megitsune, official MV is my first recommendation but is usually blocked if you don't put filters, so if you want live and safe to react, check it out Budokan 2014. "Kawaii Metal" got this.
      - Akatsuki Unfinished Version, SuMetal solo again but with only a piano behind special performance at Legend 1997. There's a widescreen with subtitles version at "Kitsune Sama".
      - Babymetal Death, live at Legend 1997, this is the big finale, you're gonna blow your mind with this one. You can find this with the introduction translated at "GuilhermeCait".

      - Kimi To Anime Ga Mitai - Answer For Animation With You, live at Budokan 2014, not sure if it's still safe, so try some filters, if is audio blocked try to mute or just cut the parts. "BABYMETAL FANS ECUADOR" got this one.
      - Distortion, live at Download Festival 2018 or Rock Am Ring 2018, this is from Metal Galaxy 3rd album and is a safe jump to that BM era way different than the rest and without YuiMetal.

Great first reaction, welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊
BABYMETAL are that most rare thing, a band doing something new and untried. They brought a fusion of great metal instrumentals coupled with JPop hooks, melodies and aesthetics ... and they have continued to develop and evolve from those beginnings.
For a whole lot of us they breathed much needed new life into music and into metal in particular after it all seemed to be stagnating, so many bands doing the same things over and again, nearly every new band seemingly trying to sound more angry or evil than each other, all growls, screams and harsh vocals and no melody.
BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before, they don't limit themselves to any one main style or genre and you won't be able to pigeonhole or put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world, they are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close) including bringing choreographed dancing to metal (but not as you might know it from pop acts where it is nearly always used just to fill the stage or give you almost naked girls (and boys) to look at to take your mind off often bland music).
BABYMETAL's choreo helps with interpreting the song - a lyric or the meaning etc, but it is designed to involve and lead the crowd, to give them their cues when to jump, shout, pump their fists, chant and so on. They are complete masters of crowd control and crowd involvement.
BABYMETAL are Su-metal (lead vocalist), Moametal and Momometal (backing vocals, harmonies, dance and hype). They are key to what makes BABYMETAL different, they lead the crowd, they give them cues when to jump, shout, chant, pump their fists, sing along and so much more - they are the vital link, the bridge between the crowd and the band and they are black belts in crowd control.
The original third member, Yuimetal, last performed in October 2017. She missed a whole year, unable to perform for undisclosed health reasons. In October 2018 she announced that she was still not fully recovered and, being unable to perform, she had decided she would leave the band.
Su and Moa chose to continue as a duo for the next 4-5 years through to and a bit beyond their 10th anniversary and only now, since 1st April 2023, are they a trio again with Momometal.
When they started in 2010 Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11. Su will be 26 this week, Moa is 24, Momoko is 20.
They are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist. They were phased in gradually from October 2012. The Kami Band members are all world class musicians and BABYMETAL needed them to move to the next level and to start touring the world, but make no mistake - BABYMETAL are the three girls, they had to prove themselves playing for free in shopping malls, a side stage by the food court used for comedians at a festival, tiny venues with a 150 capacity, and they had to find an audience that nobody (except perhaps their producer Kobametal) believed would exist before the Amuse talent agency would provide them with the beginnings of their financial backing to bring in a live band.
They had started in 2010 with little or no budget so they sang to a backing track at the start and when they started doing their own small shows guys in skeleton suits (they were the guys in the photo you flashed up - known as Babybones) would pretend to play the instruments.
The Kami Band may be session musicians with their own projects and bands, so they do swap in and out depending on their own availability, but the same hard core of about 6 or 7 musicians played the vast majority of concerts since they became the full time support early in 2014.
From their first appearance in October 2012 the Kami Band only played at a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows. They became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions.
In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) were introduced and they have been supporting BABYMETAL on their more extended foreign tours since then. It was them in this video - Chris Kelly and CJ Masciantonio on guitars, Clint Tustin on bass and Anthony Barone on drums.
In 2014 BABYMETAL started to tour outside of Asia and Japan for the first time coming to Europe and the US and since then they have won new fans all over the world and become internationally the most successful Japanese band ever and one of the very best live bands on the planet right now (with about 30 international awards to their name to prove that is not just my own opinion) - their 3rd album released in 2019 was the first by any Asian group to reach number 1 in the US Billboard Hard Rock charts.
They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different from the last. They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal, often when you least expect it. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it.
I hope you will react to more BABYMETAL songs, they will always surprise you and you can't go far wrong with whatever you choose (Jake Muller has left a list of great suggestions in the comments below). The official videos are all good and worth seeing (a couple are almost essential viewing), but BABYMETAL are a live performance act, that is where they are always at their very best.

You are pretty spot on with your observations about this being a theatre performance and this being a Japanese cheerleader thing. Sad to say many metalheads completely miss the mark on that on their first take and think everything has to be a Spotify experience only. Babymetal fundamentally at its core and how it started was a theatrical performance. Sense the beginning before they even had a live band they were just dancing on a stage to heavy music on a backtrack in malls and idol networks . Today they stand as one of the biggest live heavy metal acts on the globe. Many including myself see them very much as the “cheerleaders” of metal because although they do not play instruments themselves, their ability to pull crowd energy and bring so many metal heads and bands together in one mission is very much unrivalled in the scene. They embody the true spirit of “showmanship” in metal and are a true unifying force.
Sense you are fairly open minded enough and have already picked up on a lot of things already, there are two live performances you should check out and they reference each other:
(Feel free to ignore my recommendations sense I am not a patron)
    Headbanger live Legend 1997
Then watch the MV version of it on your own time, trust me, there is a nugget of lore needed to understand the next song
    Babymetal Death Legend 1997
Although fans might not like me recommending this one sense it’s too early, this performance is the “Ace card” if you will that hooks many into becoming hardcore fans like me but you understanding this as theatrical art makes me believe you will appreciate this performance for what it is. But alas, it certainly won’t hurt to watch some of their other performances before this one.

[MOA] SU-METAL will slash you. Really.
    [YUI] Yeah. [SU] (laughs)
(Megitsune video commentary from the BABYMETAL members)
Su was 15. Yui and Moa were 13, almost 14 when this video was released.
Even though they were wearing white robes, this was not the Kami Band that support them at live concerts.
The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group.
That instrument many of them were holding is a shamisen (meaning three strings).
Chidori Yakumo is their director. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown.
Thanks for reacting to this one. Megitsune is my jam.
It's still my favorite BABYMETAL song, video and choreography.
Definitely quintessential BABYMETAL and their most Japanese song. You could even call this Kawaii Festival Metal.
BABYMETAL's producer Koba sent this song back to the song arranger Yuyoyuppe dozens of times before he was satisfied with it.
This one consistently tops fan polls, and has been performed live more than any other BABYMETAL song.
Much of the video was shot on location on a Noh stage by the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo.
This has become a pilgrimmage site for BABYMETAL fans.

The unique, seemingly contradictory blend of cute and metal is the secret sauce that has made Babymetal a success for thirteen years.
Megitsune is one of the all time fan favourite Babymetal songs and is their most played live song; it is played at almost every live Babymetal performance. The song was released in 2013, when Su-metal was 15 and Yuimetal and Moametal were 13.
The music video was filmed a Asagaya Shinmeigu Shrine in Tokyo, and Babymetal fans (including me) from all over the world make a pilgrimage to visit it.

Great first reaction! 🤘🦊🤘 Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance!!! BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii (cute) metal group (a metal subgenre that they created) that formed in 2010 when the 3 girls were 11-12 years old (yes, they were very young), and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. Also, they released a new amazing album just a few months ago and they just finished a world tour where they had many shows here in the US. They also just released a new music video for their song called "Metali" that features Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello. 🤘🦊🤘

Yes, we are very aware of their huge WTF factor. And believe me, you haven't seen anything yet. Haha...
"Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs and their most played live one: 334 times to be exact.
They are very diverse musically as they don't hesitate on mixing any music genre with metal. And they are also unpredictable. So, always expect the unexpected. 😁
They are considered best live but this music video is a masterpiece imho.

You are not wrong about the cheer leading, because at live shows, the 2 on the side exists to lead the crowd in chants.
Babymetal is a real life unique phenomenon in the music industry. And yes, part of that is their young age, it's really something unexpected, unheard of and only worked because of the all the hard work and talent of everyone involved.

Good reaction. Welcome to the crazy universe of BabyMetal.
BabyMetal is an atypical heavy metal group, because they are idols. In Japan, idols are often paired with pop music (Jpop), and Babymetal was actually a subgroup of a larger idol group called Sakura Gakuin.
Sakura was made up of girls between 10 and 15 years old dedicated to Jpop. When SuMetal (the singer) started she was 12 years old and MoaMetal/YuiMetal (the backup singers) were only 10 years old. Sakura represented the Japanese high school and the girls were distributed in clubs (traditional Japanese extracurricular activities such as cooking, swimming, basketball, sewing, etc.).
One of the producers, a lover of heavy metal, saw that Su's singing could perfectly be used in metal and asked permission from the Mother House (Amuse) to create the heavy music club, proposing an experiment in fusion between metal and the pop. Nobody, as they themselves have confessed, had much hope for its outcome, but they gave it the green light and thus BabyMetal, Sakura Gakuin's heavy music club, was born.
The first songs were intended for girls between 10 and 15 years old, who were Sakura's target audience. However, their quality and the fusion between pop and metal attracted attention beyond this audience and they began to frequent their metal concerts... a shocking audience of children and metalheads.
And it worked, it worked so well that they began to support groups like Metallica, Red Hot, BMTH or Lady Gaga, I seem to remember, on their tours in Japan. And the Red Hot singer commented that he was impressed to realize that part of the public came to see them, not them.
And so the base of BabyMetal fans grew. Sakura was a group in which, upon turning 15, the members had to leave (to pursue their careers elsewhere) and the producer (KobaMetal) requested permission again to create BabyMetal as an independent group. Success was already beginning to become a reality in Asia, so they authorized it, although Moa and Yui (they were still 13 years old) would also continue to be part of other Sakura clubs (I don't know when the poor girls studied, but they did).
In 2014 a milestone would arrive in the group's history. They were already an established metal group in Asia that sold out concerts, but they had not yet made the leap to the West. In that year his song "Gimme Chocolate" rose to fame on CZcams (currently 182M views) and attracted the attention of the producers of the Sonisphere festival. KobaMetal had doubts about taking the step, since their musical proposal (Kawaii Metal or Cute Metal, a genre of which they are considered creators) might not be accepted in the West and the metalheads who went to the Sonisphere had a reputation for saying goodbye to very bad manners to the artists they didn't like (even with bottles full of urine), but they were offered to go to one of the secondary stages (about 5000 spectators) and they ended up accepting.
But the success of BabyMetal on CZcams and the fact that all the concerts they were going to give in Europe were sold out in a few days, convinced the producers to take them to the main stage, where they would share with groups like Metallica, for example.
How many girls (they were between 16 and 14 years old at that time) were "terrified" before going out, and they didn't know what scared them more: that they wouldn't understand their music and they would have to run away or that when they went out on stage it would be empty. .
But the story was very different, not only was it not empty, but more than 50,000 metalheads, an estimated 95% of whom had never heard of them, finished their fifth and last song chanting "another one, another one."
And that's how they achieved popularity in the West as well.
They currently have 4 albums on the market:
-Babymetal (2013): Their first album and the most childish of all, since they were between 15-13 years old when it came out and had energetic, positive music that left a smile on their faces. Megitsune belongs to this album.
-Metal Resistence (2016): an album that, without losing the essence of the first, shows more mature music, going from childhood to adolescence. Songs like Karate were a large part of his presentation in the West.
-Metal Galaxy (2018): a turning point in its style. Without abandoning their energy, they turned their attention to new forms of metal fusion (hip-hop, dance music, Hindu music or European folklore, among others), projecting a much more mature music in keeping with their age, which was already around 21 years old. of Su and the 18 of Moa (unfortunately Yui left the group due to health problems).
And now in 2023 they have just released their new album "The Other One", which is, again, totally different from what they have done until now (one of the hallmarks of BabyMetal is that their songs are usually very different some from others (although they are all positive adrenaline releases).
Currently BabyMetal is considered the most important Heavy Metal group in Japan (I'm not saying the best, that's for everyone to decide) and the most influential in history in the West (it has reached levels that no other Japanese heavy group has reached before). ).
The journey through the Babymetal galaxy may be long, but it is certainly entertaining and with a few songs it drags you with a smile into the fox hole

Well, you’ve opened a can of worms!
BABYMETAL has been around for a bit over twelve years now (they started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the band in 2018 because of health concerns, and only earlier this year Momometal (Momoko Okazaki) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer.
BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art. I suggest you go back to the beginning, and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"), both released in 2012. You’ll notice those are the first two on this list of recommended songs:
Doki Doki Morning (official music video)
    Iine! (official MV)
Gimme Chocolate!! (official MV or Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
    Megitsune (official MV)
BABYMETAL Death (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Onedari Daisakusen (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Song 4 No Uta (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Uki Uki * Midnight (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Catch Me If You Can (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Live at Sonisphere 2014 version)
    Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Road of Resistance (Legend 2015 New Year Fox Festival version)
    Karate (official MV)
Meta Taro (Five Fox Festival version)
    GJ! (Fox Festival 2017 version)
Sis Anger (Fox Festival 2017 version)
    Shanti Shanti Shanti (official MV)
    Pa Pa Ya!! (official MV)
    BxMxC (official MV)
    Metalizm (official MV)
    Metali!! (official MV)
I would include the links but, for some reason, CZcams sometimes thinks I'm posting spam and will delete my comment. For the links, see the CZcams playlist “BABYMETAL Top Twenty”; it is a mix of MV’s and live performances, is more or less in historical sequence, and could be considered a road map down the BABYMETAL foxhole. If nothing else, it can be used as a reference to find high quality versions of BABYMETAL songs without mucking about - if they are on the list. Anyway . . . .
Enjoy your trip down the foxhole! (You're in for a wild ride!!!)
Keep rockin' BABYMETAL!!! (Sorry about the wall!)
    KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

Subscribed. I like this MV because it gives more insight into their message. I also learn so much from the comments from the fan base: for instance, one pointed out how at the beginning YUI and MOA pull on SU’s Japanese costume and the next scene she is transformed into SU-METAL. 🦊 🖖❤

Great reaction to a wonderful live band that's been going 13+ years! - their live performances are every bit as good & usually better(I kid you not). But noticed the f*g comment in the chat - I can hardly believe that - I've used it for decades as "cigarette" without thinking about it. We have to put up with censorship of American offensive words now? How about chinese/german or whatever? Anyway...more Babymetal pls. Imma gonna go smoke me a f*g now :P
