According to tradition, Sunne's church and castle must have been built in 1178 on the orders of the Norwegian king, Sverre Sigurdsson, who defeated the Jämtland peasant army on the ice of Storsjön in the battle of Andersön in the spring and winter. Sunne castle was damaged in a lightning strike in 1731.
