Kelly Writers House Fellow Joan Didion discusses staying on the linguistic surface at the Kelly Writers House on March 31, 2009.
Novelist, essayist and screenwriter Joan Didion has been an incisive observer of American politics and culture for more than forty-five years. Her distinctive blend of spare, elegant prose and fierce intelligence has earned her books a place in the canon of American literature as well as the admiration of generations of writers.

Thanks for this upload. Didion is hands down one of America's premiere contemporary essayists. Her non-fiction work has always been compelling and essential reading. My admiration for her work is beyond measure.

I like her comment about "belonging on the edges of a piece." It's certainly true -- for any writer I think -- that writing from the edges is exactly the right place.

The interviewer is annoying: He's extrapolating her comments and making generalizations she didn't intend. Ironically, he's doing the opposite of the way Didion writes.
