welcome back to aesthetic analysis in the year 2018: to kick it off, I take a look at an artstyle that has always appealed to me - the paper aesthetic from Um Jammer Lammy - and why I think it works.

This was a good analysis, the paper style is really unique, and I'm honestly surprised more games didn't try to utilize it or something like that.
Thank you for the Rodney Greenbalt link! For some reason he's rarely mentioned when looking up the games. This was a really good analysis how Um Jammer Lammy mixed 2D and 3D together into a wacky, surreal cartoon! Definitely needs more attention!
When I was little my music class had an Um Jammer Lammy poster, & the more I think about it the stranger it feels, because they had no Parappa posters as if they had no idea Parappa existed, & also because where I lived, our version of the game featured a stage that literally takes place in Hell, thus it has a Teen rating, as opposed to Parappa 1 & 2, which are more popular & child-friendly.
This game was beautiful. ~
And the cut scenes were VERY MUCH ahead of their time for PlayStation 1!

The cutscenes look great if you watch them on a high-quality CRT television like a Bang & Olufsen or a Sony Trinitron.
You know Bang & Olufsen makes speakers, right?

I just beat the game the other day on my friends trinitron and the game looked amazing
I always felt UJL's Cutscenes are very underappriciated.
They are so crazy and over the top and the frequent lammy reaction shots of whatever is going on really sell it.
I wish there was an animated series that captures this weird charme. I image something along the lines of xavier renegade angel which took the weirdness and awkwardness of PS2 era cutscenes as an inspiration
Um Jammer Lammy, animation wise, is always better than Parappa the Rappa ^^ Will you be doing some gameplays of said game? I wanna see more Lammy action >w

I really like this short overview format.
Definitely my fav🕹️ in the Parappa Universe and most fun. I'm glad these games exist. Someday the Parappa Toaster that burns his face on toast will be mine😂 I'm happy you pointed out the 3d in places 👟I never noticed because it all was put together so well.

Parappa 2 has the best animation
Maybe so but that's because it was made on the PS2. Um Jammer Lammy came out on the PS1 and he seemed to be focused on the PS1 era for comparisons.

The fact about parappa translating to "Paper thin" isn't true. You can put "パラッパ" (parappa's japanese name" into google translate and it will turn up nothing. I do not know where this came from, but it isn't true. It's just his name.
