John Entwistle died of a heart attack on 27th June 2002 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, one day before the scheduled beginning of The Who's US tour. An autopsy concluded the 57 year old had ingested cocaine and also had a form of coronary artery disease.
No, you're right that it's not The Who version of the song, but John is miming to HIS version from "Rigor Mortis Sets In". Definitely the same vocal track as the album. Great version!
He had such a very bass-heavy speaking voice, it's cool to know his singing voice was very high. Kinda like a reverse Ian Curtis (very high-pitched speaking voice, very super LOW singing voice).
I don't think he's miming - I think he's singing over his original vocal, something they did on OGWT and TOTP in those days. This isn't the Who version, so I think there's an element of liveness there.
I believe this may be live -One of the tell-tale's in the guitarist hits a wrong chord at 0:24 on the word "ain't" You can hear it and then watch as John looks over at him after singing "after me" The guitarist is looking away but then when he looks back at John he cracks up because John caught the mistake. John gives a tiny head shake then, a grin on his face goes back to singing. I've played in a band for 30 years and I know those moments and that look SO well. I miss you Ox.
Todd Zornow I respect Pete and Rog, but have to agree that John was the most important factor in The Who, he's just not as flashy so he's not as commonly appreciated, an absolute sin if you ask me.
The players on the Rigor Mortis Sets In album, according to Wiki (that's Tony Ashton in the flat cap on keyboards, but definitely not Jim Ryan or Alan Ross on guitar. Looks like Graham Deakin on drums) John Entwistle - Bass guitar, Electric guitar, Keyboards, Lead VocalsAlan Ross - Guitars, piano, Accordion, Trumpet, Synthesizer; lead vocals on "Mr. Bass Man"Jim Ryan - Lead GuitarTony Ashton - Keyboards, Hammond organ, pianoBryan Williams - trombone, organ on "My Wife" and "Peg Leg Peggy"Howie Casey - saxophone on "Gimme That Rock N' Roll", "Do The Dangle" and "Hound Dog"Members of The Ladybirds: Gloria George - Backing vocalsMaggie Stredder - Backing vocalsMarian Davies - Backing vocalsGraham Deakin - Drums, Percussion on "Peg Leg Peggy", "My Wife" and "Made in Japan"

Eddie Jones (guitar player to the left) played with my hubby in Richimond VA USA. A Great guy! He passed a few years ago.
