The MOST BROKEN Character in Fire Emblem Engage - Jean and Ike Great Aether Combo Analysis

  • I stumbled on this great combo in Engage that has Jean and Ike going crazy with Great Aether, Wrath and Vantage to be almost unkillable and having a LOT of crit. This build is VERY viable all the way through the end game and while it does take a bit of initial investment and babying of Jean, it will pay off in dividends once it really gets going. He is literally a one man army.

I found out that Great Aether will automatically taunt every enemy when you cast it because of the 100% get hit rate you put on yourself. So having someone with Lucina and Bonded Shield will help block most of the damage. The enemies only attack the Lucina unit if the Ike unit is surrounded and they cannot find a position to hit them, which is not likely to happen. This combo is my favourite to clean map and farm exp. It helps to have the unit using Lucina to have high avo so they don’t get targeted. Also helps to have Soren’s skill to force a unit to be targeted.

Yep, this is very very similar to the Panette build I was running by the end of hard classic.
I saw he had the potential to become something like this near the end of my hard playthrough, but by then my Panette was already like this.
Though he doesn't get the benefit of her really high base strength and hp, and doesn't have the extra 10 crit and maybe some personal stat cap modifiers.
In my case, I had +6 extra attack with axes as well, instead of vantage.
Since I didn't have quite the group killing potential yours does with vantage/pair up I was using her for great aether, some longbow snipes (she was classed as warrior), and as a kill this unit button with the ~80-100% crit triple digit damage attacks she was getting.
Nice to see other people finding things like this, though I think I'll be making my Jean a halberdier or maybe mage knight for cutting through defenses, since there's only one Ike.

Quick correction to something here that I didn't see in the comments already:
You should always, always use master seals to promote a unit before you 2nd seal. If you use the 2nd seal 1st, you have to spend 20 levels in a base class. In Jean's case, you spend 10 levels in monk and 10 levels in fighter before you can be a berserker. The promotion path would look like this:
10 levels in Monk -> 2nd Seal to level 1 fighter -> 10 levels in fighter -> Master Seal to Berserker
However, if you promote him at level 10 to an advanced class, you can 2nd seal him immediately to berserker as there is no level requirement for 2nd seal use once you are promoted. This would totally bypass the 10 levels he has to spend as a fighter and because engage moderates exp gains based off an internal level counter, he would actually gain exp faster as a level 1 berserker with this method. Promotion path would look like this:
10 levels in Monk -> Master Seal to Martial Master -> (without levelling) 2nd Seal to Berserker.
The change in growths would get him a 20% higher strength growth for the 10 levels he would have spent in fighter and 10% higher growths in HP and Build. It also gets him access to better weapons sooner and an extra point of movement which is nice>
This tip is true for every character and not just Jean, so it's useful to know. Small tip for promoting aside, I really enjoyed the video! This is a funny build and it looks like it works great, especially if you get him some forges and engravings on those weapons. I bet a forged tomahawk would be incredibly rude here.

At 5:39, he mentions why Jean is the exception to the rule of "promote first, reclass second". It has everything to do with Jean's Personal Skill Expertise, which doubles the growth rates of whatever class he is in.
Therefore, if you're trying to optimize his build, it makes sense to reclass him into something that has beneficial growths since Jean joins at Lv1 and needs to gain those 9 Base class levels before promotion regardless.
As you can see from the timestamp, he gains an average of 5 HP/2 Str/1 Dex/2 Spd/1 Bld over his default Monk class in that short stint in a Base class, making it more efficient to reclass before anything else. Not only that, he is more effective in the short term this way and doesn't end up with a bunch of redundant stats that could've gone into useful ones.

If you want to make Jean something else but also have something similar to this that's better than Boucheron, Berserker Amber works well for this.
Amber's Aspiring Hero skill makes him take way too many hits so having Ike's Laguz Friend completely nullify that demerit while also reaping the massive health growth of the Berserker class is definitely valuable. It lets him take advantage of the large +20 hit from Aspiring Hero to make the notoriously low hit rate axes actually smack them while also activating Aspiring Hero naturally since he's throwing himself into battle.
While Amber's health growth pales in comparison to Boucheron and Jean at only a mere 95, his strength growth supplants both of them at 75 throwing in +2 to the Strength cap. Also, Boucheron sucks as a Berserker since he doesn't have high strength but rather has extremely high dexterity. That doesn't work well for Berserker since Berserker literally has the lowest dexterity cap in the game. Boucheron is better of switching to a Wyvern Knight cause of that since it's way too easy to cap out on dex if he stays as a Berserker. It should be a given, but you kinda want the highest strength growth for the highest strength cap and growth class in the game. Amber's stats are more suited to that, and his skill even works well for it.

You can inherit the "normal" version by getting the units bond to Level 3. I'm at chapter 9 and Leifs max Bondlevel goes up to Level 10. Does it reach another max Level when I have more progress in the game? I'm confused since the Dlc chars can already reach up to Bondlevel 20. As a fellow content creator I felt obligated to correct the misinformation present in this video.
Stat caps are based both off the class and the unit's maximum stat modifiers (MSMs); you take the maximum stats of the class and apply the MSMs of the unit (this is how it worked in Awakening/Fates as well), which you can find on SerenesForest under characters maximum stats, not that far off from where you found the maximum class stats you showed (which I imagine you assumed was the maximum stats regardless of unit since there were no MSMs in Three Houses).
If we're going for the strongest possible build, we'd care a lot more about the MSMs than we would character growth rates, as MSMs affect what the cap of our potential is, whereas growths just affect how long it takes to get there. If you're at a characters maximum stats you'd never have to worry about growths ever again, which would render Jean's personal skill useless at that point, as if he is now the one character in the game with no personal skill. I would assume we're talking about maximum potential here considering the initial goal was to hit the HP cap and then this build spawned from that, so I'll be basing my analysis off of what is the strongest regardless of growths.
Calling Jean "potentially the best unit in the game for every class" if we're talking purely from a maximum potential standpoint is just blatantly wrong, he's one of the worst actually. If we're talking about just doing the main game through and then putting it down, never trying to perfect any units, then sure, the argument can be made, but if we're talking the ceiling of potential regardless of the amount of grinding time to reach it, then it is false.
All Jean is is the unit who can most *quickly* hit the maximum stats of that given class, but at the end of the day would actually be *worse* than almost any other unit in the game once those maximum stats are hit, as he essentially has no personal skill at that point whereas every other unit does. It's also worth noting that his MSMs are +2 Magic, -1 Dexterity, -1 Speed, +1 Luck, not exactly fantastic MSMs but alright enough if you put him into a Magic class, since he's gaining +2 to his maximum Magic but +-0 to his maximum Strength. This means his best final class is in a magic-based class, where he benefits from the +2. Putting him into a physical class instead just wastes his potential, considering you've now got a physical unit whose only change to stats they care about is -1 Dex, -1 Spd, +1 Lck, gross...
Let's call this a -1.5 to stats we care about, -1 to Dex and Spd, and +1 Lck which is the least important stat in the game so I'm adding 0.5 instead of 1.
Of the 36 characters in this game, and assuming we don't care about Magic MSMs because we're going for a purely physical class and treating Lck and 0.5, there are only 3 units in the game Jean can do better than (Celine, Citrinne, Pandreo, as most of their MSMs are in Magic). This means that 33/36 characters have a higher ceiling of potential in this build than Jean, or in other words 92% of the cast that's better at this build than him. "The MOST BROKEN Character in Fire Emblem Engage" you say...? It'd be fine if you specified this was for getting this setup online as soon as possible so you can use it for as much of the main story as you can, but since that isn't the case this really is just straight up misinformation.
Anybody watching this video who wants the strongest possible builds regardless of grinding time because you want to take on things like the ultimate Tempest Trials, this is a pretty alright build you could go with, but please do not give it to Jean, give it to somebody else you feel is most fitting based off of 1) Maximum Stat Modifiers and 2) Personal Skill (though it's pretty hard to choose somebody worse than Jean for this to be fair)
Other notes, yes Lineage from the Rivals can increase EXP growth by 1.2x, but it's just a worse version of a main game skill, being Byleth's Mentorship, which affects both the unit and any adjacent units (although it's 250SP as oppose to 150SP). And this isn't even a thing for this video specifically but just helping with Engage in general, but you mention Ike's Resolve+ has helped make your tank units even tankier, but there's an even better damage reducing alternative if we're talking about what skills to inherit, and that's Eirika's Gentility+. Resolve+ grants Def/Res +7 when under 75% HP, Gentility+ on the other hand reduces damage taken by 5. So take 7 less damage when under 75% HP, or 5 less damage always? I would argue Gentility+ is the far greater boon, and could only really see myself running Resolve+ on Timerra (and one other niche case unit) to boost Sandstorm damage as it's based off defence.
Anyway, if you're reading this LinkKing, know that I do love getting to know fellow content creators, so feel free to reach out sometime if you'd like to talk Engage numbers, as crunching numbers of games like this is something I do. Ever since the release of Fates I've been making dedicated excel spreadsheets for each of the FE games I play to compile all relevant information so I can number crunch to figure out what seems to be ideal builds, and turn it into a resource for Fire Emblem fans to more easily visualize the possibilities themselves. I'm not yet done with my Engage sheet so it's not publicly released yet, I'd say I'm a bit more than halfway through, and because of the sheer amount of projects I take on I haven't had a chance to test out my builds properly in game yet, but if things work the way the math seems to imply I'd wager I have a fair few builds plotted out stronger than this. So let me know if ever you want to talk shop.

The like minded people must be brought together, it's 80 though, not 60, at least when he reaches berserker!

@@LinkKing7 Yep, I was counting only berserker rates with Jean's passive, without Jean's growth rates. :)

@@LinkKing7 Also I gotta question. What are your thoughts on Céline sword build, I was just checking her growth rates and her Str growth are Higher than her Mag and she also has quite decent res and luck, Im thinking about turning her into some kind of mage slayer. :D

@@sosspeedy It definitely works, she's pretty flexible in what you can do with her tbh!

So you could do the same thing with Pannete without the investment… no sealing required and much less babying. I don’t see the point of berserker Jean when there’s Panette ready to go or Saphir ready to reclass
