Hearing this reminds me of life twenty years ago, driving around listening to the Heavier Than Thou compilation album on cassette. I wore that tape out and drove everyone crazy with Saint Vitus. None of my acquaintances understood the greatness of Saint Vitus. Thought they were nothing more than Sabbath imposters. Vitus took what Sabbath started and then plunged headforth into unknown depths of doom and despair. When they broke up in the nineties, I was so depressed. Glad they're back!
I had that cassette. I played it till it wore out. Trying to get all the vinyl again. I listened to it at work after listening to Sublime and Dave Matthews all night. My kitchen crew were bummed when it was my turn for music.
Alcohol knows it's gonna win. This ain't just some groovy jammy song Y'all. This is a terrifying truth for those of us who live this nightmare. I swear that booze is staring right back at me and laughing, because it knows that it's the sickness, but also the cure. It's a horribly vicious cycle. It'll make you sick as a dog, and then offer you the only real hangover cure known to man, which is more booze, which you'll then get another hangover from. It cures anxiety, but also causes it. It cures depression, but also causes it. It's the cruellest mistress. Randy from Lamb of God said it best "This God that I worship, this demon I blame. It's exactly the same." Those who don't understand what I'm saying, I hope you never do. I hope you stay naive and safe. This is a nightmare.
I lost my dad to wet brain one year ago. Hearing this reminds me of him. His struggles. We tried so hard to steer him right, but he truly did become his addiction. RIP dad. I know you're not in a better place right now, but at least you're no longer suffering.
St. Vitus are one of the few bands that have an unmistakeable sound. You just hear one note played with that fuzzy humming guitar tone, and you know it's the masters of doom.
Lyric: I have got to change my ways 'Cause I'm losing my mind I have got to stop drinking 'Cause I'm dying inside I feel twice as old as I am And it's getting worse I'm in the palm of habit's hand I can't escape the curse There is nothing that I can do I have no self control I have let myself become dead I have ruined my soul Every time I wake up sick I say never again But then opportunity knocks And I'm wasted my friend I can't control my addiction I've tried time and time again I'm losing all my friends and lovers Alcohol knows it's gonna win Now I have lost everything And I really don't care Everybody that I have known Has out cast me here Drinking has wasted my life And I'm dying inside I feel twice as old as I am I've lost what left of my mind I can't control my addiction I've tried time and time again I'm losing all my friends and lovers Alcohol knows it's gonna win
I ran into Wino in Downtown Rehearsals in DTLA on my birthday in 2012. I had been drinking all day. He told me he was getting the Obsessed back together. Later that night, I got into a fight with a bum and a midget on the bus ride home. I spent the next few nights in a jail nowhere near home.
So poignant anguished, honest, soul searching and introspective yearnings of an alcohol addict crying out for an escape and a better way of living. The music of Saint Vitus sure expresses this so aptly and an almost cathartic exercise that helps bring about release. What it is that's so great about doom metal which these boys wrote the script for. True groundbreakers.
These guys are truly incredible live. I had the honor of seeing them in 2012 and have a funny story to go with it too. I was 15 and rather lit at the time. Dave Chandler jumped into the crowd and everyone stood back except me cause I was too out of it to register what happened. To my amazement and horror, Dave held out his guitar as if he wanted me to play it. The problem was, I didn't know how to play and being the shy and awkward kid I was, I simply froze in fear. Instead of being an asshole about it like I feared he would be, however, Dave did something wonderful. He gave me a very kind, grandfatherly smile and simply placed his guitar on my head so other people could play on top of it. I was still very embarrassed, but looking back on it, I do not believe Dave could have handled the situation better and I will always be grateful to him for his kindness, as well as all the members of Saint Vitus for the phenomenal music they create.
I was kidding, no problem!! The sound on this recording is almost perfect, it sounds pure St Vitus 100%, anyway if you say that it was a two-track recording, it almost a miracle!! In fact Wino's voice sounds greater than ever!
Not quite. Its a lil deeper. I once let a classical guitar teacher listen to this and he called it. A guitar player hitting all the "right" wrong notes. Lol.......
HENRY VASQUEZ is a fucking beast of a drummer, very nice guy to,i met him at his record store in Ft worth, bought a few T-shirts from him and we discussed alot of different things about music
The guitarist's soloing style kind of grows on me. It's frenetic, chaotic, atonal at times, uses the wah pedal to cover bad notes, but it works well for that sludgy kind of heavy metal. It lends itself well to the impending doom of the music.
Well, I'm not saying he's a virtuoso by any means, but what he does works well for Saint Vitus. Kind of like how Johnny Ramone was about as simplistic as it gets, all downpicked barre chords, but it works well for The Ramones's music. Every guitarist across the spectrum of technical ability, whether it's a punk guy on one end or Yngwie Malmsteen on the other, has a place where their style gels well with other musicians in a band situation. Ultimately, to each their own.
This song is one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. Alcohol will always win and it is advertised everywhere and now with opiates being hard to get alcohol is a cheap more dangerous alternative

I'm in the palm of habit's hand

I have let myself become dead

I say never again
But then opportunity knocks
And I'm wasted my friend
I can't control my addiction
I've tried time and time again
I'm losing all my friends and lovers
Alcohol knows it's gonna win
Now I have lost everything
And I really don't care
Everybody that I have known
Has out cast me here
Drinking has wasted my life
And I'm dying inside
I feel twice as old as I am
I've lost what left of my mind
I can't control my addiction
I've tried time and time again
I'm losing all my friends and lovers
Alcohol knows it's gonna win
