I can certainly relate to the sentiment here. I felt the same way during travels abroad. I'm nowhere near as skilled as this gentleman and lady but I spoke what I could. And when a lot of these nations outside the US see a black person speaking their language, particularly a black person who calls the USA home I think it's a strong surprise if not a shock to residents of those places. But it's a pleasant surprise :)
I found that studying a new language in another language which you are not native in helps to keep focused.
Also for a new language I found Kieran Ball's 3 minute courses to be a good tool to feel the taste of it. I swallow a few months of lessons worth in few days
