  • This is for beginners.
    This wall has been pointed in hot lime. The hot lime is cold and mixed using quicklime and a medium grade sharp sand.
    I've shown you a couple of ways beds first then perps or perps first then beds. I've over filled the joints so hopefully you can understand better when it's time to finish your pointing off. I've covered my work with hessian sacking.

    The wall looks quite modern, was it build using lime mortar? Is it ok to point a wall with lime mortar that has been built using a standard cement mix? Great vids by the way I really enjoy watching skilled tradesmen. Keep up the good work.

      The bay was done 50 years ago I've cleaned all the bricks so it looks very clean
      I've tried to match the new mortar to the house which is 75 years old
      I've worked on new builds that are built in sand and cement with old bricks so I've pointed them up in lime to make them look in keeping with the style of bricks

    When doing clean, even brick like this, do you still use a churn brush to knock it back, or is that done only for rough, uneven walls?

    • @GMTpointingspecialistsltd
      @GMTpointingspecialistsltd  Před rokem +2

      Do it on every wall
      The churn brush is to push all the aggregates together that gives a good finish and strength
      A couple of ways to do it are
      You can let the lime harden off and then scrape it back with a trowel and then churn brush off I'm not a fan of that way
      I'll like to point up
      Then use a stick to push it back
      Then churn brush if you don't want it to gritty use a softer sand and a softer brush to polish up at the end

      @@GMTpointingspecialistsltd Thanks for your advice. The section of pointing i did has turned out really well. It took quite a while for it to go fully hard (I was using non-hyraulic lime) but it seems to have carbonated well with no shrinkage. It was a tediously long process as the mortar in the verticle joints had literally turned to dust. There were 9cm voids between the bricks, so i had to do it in stages! I don't think the wall had ever been repointed (it's a 200 year old house). The walls were encased in cement render. Stank of damp when i chipped it away!

    • @GMTpointingspecialistsltd
      @GMTpointingspecialistsltd  Před 2 lety +3

      First of all it depends
      What area you live in
      What material you are pointing
      What your adding to your hot mix
      How big an area you are pointing
      I use my hot mixed lime cold only in protected areas
      It might be cheaper for you to buy it ready made
      A good quality NHL can have as much free lime content as 66% so depending on the application
      You could use that

      @@GMTpointingspecialistsltd thank god for your video. After doing my research my flats just over 100yrs old and i have penetrating damp on the wall thats by the bay window. You can see it needs repointing and the seller did a crap job of it using cement and has smeared it all over the bricks, a total eye sore. After researching i came to lime mortar and understanding why it's used and that this older property needs breathability. I asked for a quote and one guy wanted to use cement and apply storm gurad but I heard thats terrible and can even exasperate yhe issues by trapping the water between the walls. I am abit stressed bcs the wall is the bedroom wall and on the inside the seller tried to paint over the damp and now its just soaking wet. Anyone who does lime mortar work is saying not the best time of year to do it. But theres so many gaps i wish I could show u a pic. I am scared to leave it over winter incase the damp gets even worse? I have no idea what to do on the inside i think they decf used gypsum plaster. Shouldn't it be lime also? :/ Any advice would be wonderful. We are a young couple and spent all out savings to buy this flat outright and this came up last minute. People are quoting me well over a grand and I cant afford it but scared the wall is going to give way while I am asleep or something!

    • @GMTpointingspecialistsltd
      @GMTpointingspecialistsltd  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I'd never use a 4:1 mix on anything that's a rock hard mix it will destroy most bricks what are you pointing
      Concrete is 3:1 so
      depending on the brand of cement you use that can get upto 40 to 50 mpa adding pva makes it more plyable but will increase the strength by 10 to 15 mpa
      It's no good in the winter as it freezes and can break down
      Fungi and lichen also break down a chemical in the glue

    • @GMTpointingspecialistsltd
      @GMTpointingspecialistsltd  Před 11 měsíci +1

      @skatergirl7663 sand and cement shouldn't be near a 100 year old property
      The cement pointing was added on at a later date
      If you find a bit of the wall that has no cement put a little bit of white vinegar on it it will fizz to show its lime mortar
