  • Alfredo Di Stefano is one of the greatest footballers of all time, and he's also one of the most important.
Di Stefano changed the way in which the game was played, and he forever shaped the footballing future of a city, a country, and a continent during his time at Real Madrid.
In this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at why Alfredo Di Stefano is so important.

Di Stefano would be a nightmare to face. I can’t imagine having a player that scored 30+ goals a season that drops and wins the ball and gets assists as well. I would like to see the amount of assists he got in those seasons but unfortunate no one counted but I would imagine it would be high. Imo top 3 best players ever.

@@ChristianDoretti oof, coming on a bit aggressive there by guy. The game being more physically aggressive nowadays is a strange claim to make. Given how fouls and y/r card rules have become more strict over the years (coaches instruct defenders to foul messi tactically to avoid getting sent off, coaches back then instructed defenders to break his legs.) It is faster paced though, and over the years di Stefano's do everything philosophy has influenced the game positionally. Goalkeepers need to be ballplayers, and strikers have to contribute defensively by pressing and winning the ball high, an idea guardiola helped further in his use of high pressing. In short, Messi is living in a generation of football where forwards are asked to contribute defensively, and also played for 4-5 years under a coach who used high pressing tactics, it's his job. Messi did it because he was told to, Di Stefano did it because he felt like it. Not saying messi can't defend, he's not an excellent defensive forward tho, (like say salah, mane, Sanchez and vardy) he's just a modern one who is required (or at least should be) to defend as expected. As for your singular example of one game where messi one four balls (which is nontheless impressive) it's obv only one example, and also I'm not surprised it was for Argentina, where he's required to do more hands on work unlike at Barcelona where for the last five years he and similarly Ronaldo, will only do what they feel like, cause they're The star man and their teammates can take care of whatever they can't be bothered doing. (Although this season he is doing a lot more as Barcelona have nearly become Argentina national team 2.0) no need for the hostility though man, if you disagree you disagree. Also I don't expect you to read all of this, I've written more in this comment than I have in school this year, oops

@@avelardaniel74 What you're saying is wrong also, Di Stefano was signed by Barcelona from River Plate in 1953, Madrid signed him from Millonarios though Millonarios could only make use of his federative rights until the end of the 1954 and could only transfer him with River Plate's consent. The latter had their federative rights recognized for 1955 onwards which was only when Barcelona could field him and call him their player. Barcelona made him go to Spain in 1953 even though they didn't have his transfer rights, things go to so bad that at one point FIFA banned him from training with Barcelona and had to arbitrate a dispute between the two clubs. The RFEF didn't intervene on anyone's behalf, if anything the only time the RFEF ever intervened judicially to help a club out in a transfer dispute was during the Kubala saga when Barcelona again signed a player without a legal transfer of federative rights of the player's parent club, The Spanish federation lobbied so hard that they got Kubala in spain, helped him become a Spanish citizen and baptized him as a catholic in the home town of the RFEF's president (Muñoz Caleros), so the myth about Franco's biase against Barcelona and Di Stefano falls apart in this respect. Both clubs agreed to share the player as per FIFA's arbitration, when Barcelona's president at the time returned home with the resolution the popular mass of the club asked for his resignation and then a special board agreed to sell the rest of the player's transfer rights to RM at a profit, probably because Kubala was no longer injured, Di Stefano was over weight and Daucik, the coach at the time was unsure having two star players was a good idea.
The ban on foreign players in 1953 was lifted for players signed before the ban had taken place only after both club presidents begged for a moratorium. Those are the facts.
people want to make this Real Madrid VS Barcelona a Franco vs Catalonia thing, and it's worked wonders for the Barca Mythos. but Madrid was and is the bastion of republicanism, not Catalonia.

I've been watching alot of Di Stefano lately, and what really impressed me is how he picks up the ball in defence, midfield or attack. He really was an orchestrator without parralel. With a level of fitness like I've never witnessed till today.
Out of what I've seen he and Maradona are the greatest players in history.
There's just a couple of errors I believe you make on this great video.
There is no proof Franco had anything to do regarding Di Stefano or Spanish football. No matter how much Barca fans try to promote it.
It would have been the Spanish FA and not the government involved in any decisions concerning the blonde arrow or any other football decisions.
And it is totally factual that the city of Madrid fought against Francos forces for three long years ,where as Catalonia no matter how much they like to lie surrendered with in a matter of weeks.
Still to this day you can see monuments and buildings that were damaged by Francos forces in the Spanish capital.
I'm still waiting for a Catalan to show me the same in Barcelona.
Apart from that your videos are great and the more people that view them the less ignorance in the football world.
    Big thumbs up.

Di Stéfano was the first historical Football legend I have learned about after Pelé and Maradona, when I read the book about the greatest players in history when I was 15. Since then, names like Puskás, Kubala, Zico, Socrates, Eusébio and him have been ingrained in my memory as the greatest players ever, next to Maradona and Pelé of course. It was the time when Messi and Ronaldo weren't known yet. I knew the more recent guys like van Basten, Beckenbauer, Müller, Klinsmann and such because they were mentioned a lot but these old or less mentioned South American legends were new to me.

    @johnbakker4828 Před 3 lety

Great video, I like how you don't forget and actively campaign for the greats of the past! If I may add one tiny point of criticism, there were a few pronunciations of Spanish and Portuguese that were off. Of course nobody expects you to sound like a native speaker, but I think now some names might not even be recognizable to a native speaker. For example, Gerson, who you rate so highly, is not pronounced with the G sounding as in 'get' or 'spaghetti', but rather sounds like Zherson, pichichi is pronounced pitchitchi and La máquina and El Monumental have the stress on a different syllable. Obviously it's not super important, but as a Dutchman I always greatly appreciate it when I see a video where Dutch names are pronounced correctly, or at least as close to correctly as one might hope for from a foreigner. Example, most English people know about the letter J in names like Ajax or De Jong, but when I hear Willem II being pronounced as Willem tway (the phonetical English spelling of the number 2, or twee in Dutch) it makes me feel like the person went the extra mile. But if you don't have the time for it, that's totally cool too. Keep the videos coming, loving them!
