Felix, that gadget you made for maintaining a steady hand was genius! If you can find a hollow reed, you can hold it in your mouth and gently blow on the tinder to give it air as you heat it up, if there is no natural air flow at the time. I've found that coffee grounds, whether fresh or used, as long as they are dry, make for excellent ignition with a lens. I don't think instant coffee will form an ember, but it may be useful for darkening a white tender source. Another great tips and tricks video done as only Professor Immler can do it! Ciao!

In 1800's Sami people of Lapland used sulfur cup with flint and firesteel to make a fire. Compared to charcloth or horseshoe fungus which they also carried as a backup, the benefit of sulfur was immediate flame when they managed to catch the spark while ember takes more work to ignite as a flame. Typically sulfur cup was made from a large copper coin hammered as a cup where the sulfur was then melted and let to solidifye. After sulfur flame was used to ignite some other material it would be extinguished by the palm of the hand and could be used again.

Great video. I got a fire going with a SAK magnifier only once and it was on a mountain top, in July, on a cloudless day, at 1 pm, using dry grass. I used the corkscrew to hold the knife in place on a log.

Two years ago, at Boy Scout Camp, I started a fire for the very first time with a Mag Glass!
I had tried on and off over the years this method, never any luck. I wanted to show the scouts it was possible, and amazingly it happened! The scouts need to show 3 methods to start a fire without matches or lighter for 1st Class.

Love your videos Felix. When I was a boy I used a magnifying glass to burn designs into leather and pieces of light coloured timber etc. I am in Australia where the sun is strong but the trick was to make a very small sun dot and move it slowly along the leather or timber. I could sign my name or draw pictures but if I moved my hand too slowly the leather or timber would burn.
I remember a demonstration some years ago of some one starting a fire using a block of ice for the magnifier.

My dad once found himself without any means to light his cigarette whilst out on the golf course and none of his playing partners smoked. So out came a kid's magnifying glass he carried in his golf bag (no idea why) and five minutes later he was eventually able to enjoy his smoke 🙂

Another terrific video. I figured why not try to use something even smaller, so I tried using the magnifying glass on my lensatic compass, but I could not achieve the desired angle without breaking the frame. I did have some success with the magnifier on my orienteering compass.

I once started my bee smoker successfully with the lens when I forgot my lighter. That was a great experience.
I'm sure, that it helped, that there was still some black charred material on the smoker which I could use as tinder. In my experience it's very important that the tinder is dark so absorb as much light as possible.

I was looking at the Victorinox Swiss champ online and I saw it had a magnifing glass. It reminded me of as a child burning leaves with a magnifing glass and then I thought how the magnifing glass is a good emergency bushcraft fire starter. I become a fan of your channel 3 years ago and you made me a SAK fan too. I think your Idea of blackening the tinder is really clear because the colour black absorbs the most light. You really read my mind when you made this video.

Regarding the holder: although it’s cool, I think an easier approach is just to use any stick from the forest floor and attach the SAK to it using the awl or the corkscrew (corkscrew if the stick already has some crack or hole in it)

Was meine Erfahrungen mit Brennglas-Feuer angeht, hab ich da sicher schon mehr als 60 Jahre auf dem Buckel, weil ich da schon als Kind damit angefangen habe. Nicht mit der Swiss-Champ-Lupe, sondern meist mit einem Fadenzähler - das ist eine faltbare Stehlupe, die vor allem in der Textilindustrie und in Druckereien eingesetzt wird. Die Linse dürfte mehr oder weniger denselben Durchmesser wie die vom Champ haben. Ich denke mal, ich hab so ziemlich alles angekokelt, was mir in die Finger kam ... ;-)
Meine Erfahrungen in Kürze: je dunkler, je matter und je faseriger der Zunder ist, desto besser geht es, und je heller, reflektierender/glänzender und kompakt er ist, desto schwieriger wird es. Das sieht man ja auch hier, z.B. beim Klopapier, das hat erst angefangen zu rauchen, nachdem Du es geschwärzt hast. Was das Zeitungspapier angeht, habe ich eine Alternative zu Deiner Methode: ich empfehle, ein vielleicht doppelt so großes Stück wie bei Dir hier zweimal zu falten und dann eng zusammenzurollen. Anschließend schneidest Du quer zur Rolle möglichst dünne (

@@FelixImmler Ja mach mal, aber werde bloß nicht zum Raucher - ich kann persönlich bestätigen, dass Rauchen sehr krank machen kann ... vielleicht hätte ich das mit den Zigaretten auch besser gar nicht erwähnen sollen.
Gibt da übrigens noch was zu ergänzen: das kleine Scherchen am Vic ist dann dazu da, die Zigarette ein Stückchen hinter der Glut abzuschneiden. Dann kann man den Rest der Zigarette hinterher weiterverwenden.
Ich würde auch vorschlagen, die Schneiderei nicht schon vor dem Anzünden zu machen - die Glut lässt sich super hochfahren, indem man einfach an der Zigarette zieht. Das geht aber nicht so simpel, wenn man ein Stück abschneidet und dann bläst. Anscheinend sind die Dinger irgendwie auf Zug eingestellt ... ;-)
Brauchst Du ja vielleicht auch gar nicht selbst ausprobieren, findet sich ja sicher noch irgendein Raucher in Deinem Bekanntenkreis, der sich als Versuchskaninchen eignet ... ;-)
Mit losem Tabak geht es übrigens zwar auch, aber nicht so einfach. Und wenn, dann zerkrümel eine normale Zigarette, denn der Tabak von Zigarren oder Pfeifentabak ist nicht so gut geeignet. Mit selbstgedrehten Zigaretten (mit schwarzem Tabak wie z.B. Samson) geht es auch ganz gut, aber am allerbesten sind halt ganz ordinäre Fabrikzigaretten. Da ist wohl außer Tabak manchmal auch noch anderes Zeug wie Zellulose und wer weiß was sonst noch drin, was hilft. Gibt auf jeden Fall eine super Glut.

I especially like your use of a stick and/or mortar-and-pestle to crush / break-up / fray the fibers / and to compact your tinder. Darkening the tinder with a little left-over (and pulverized) charcoal is a great idea. Above all, patience, perseverance ... and practice !!
Also: some folks recommend giving the ember time to grow and coalesce before transferring it to the rest of the tinder (bird's nest).

Swiss army knives are good and have many useful functions, however I wish they would implement some sort of safety feature to lock the knife blades in the open position to prevent them from closing unintentionally while in use..
yes, that would be a great option....
One of my earliest memories was camping with my Dad in Spain he would light dried cow manure with the Swiss army knife magnifying glass to start our fire!

Charred punk wood in a small tin with an air tight lid create a coal w/ magnifying lens
use the coal to ignite a small candle then close the tin to smother the punk wood for
use the next time. I have been successful under less than ideal conditions even with
the smaller Wenger magnifying glass.

Fantastic video!!! Thanks Felix. I was trying to light a fire with a credit card-sized fresnel lens and mainly failing. I had to used some magnesium shavings to get my tinder going. I will definitely try some of your tinders and techniques....
All the tindes i showed works fantastic with a fresnel linse... you will see.
Good video. To sad the maynifying glass is only on multiple layer models. I EDC two (and maybe 3) layers max. So I carry a seperate magnifying glass when outdoors. I also would like to see they have more sheep foot blade models with other tools. But you did explain the working of a magnifying glass and the different tinders very good.

Thermo paper from a shop receipt or something like that should be a good tinder material as well, it turns black as soon as you heat it and you´re more likely to have some with you than a newspaper.
Felix I'm concerned you are stalking my FB page 🤣 I only posted a video on my FB last week of me starting a fire with my SAK, late afternoon in winter (Australia) 😆 Here's what I had to say: "Technically still winter so I finally achieved one of the goals that has eluded me for a long time; starting a fire, late afternoon, in 'winter' using natural tinder & the magnify glass on a Swiss Army knife. May have taken 15-20mins with lots of grumbling but the 'patience' (I use term loosely) paid off."
I found using the inside of bark scrapped and fluffed up produces a great ember to place in my 'birds nest' to get the fire going. The fluff burns down to the bark and holds the ember well.

There's a lot of crazy talk going on there.
I like his video's in an entertaining sense, and also to see the knife's limits. But the conclusions being drawn is another matter.
According to his tests only the knives with overly thick edges and tips are the best survival knives. Which is nonsense. And as we know the primitive living tribes we still have in the world(Bushmen in the Kalahari desert, indigenous people in the Amazon etc.) all use knives that aren't overly thick..Not 6mm thickness blades. And those tribes know survival, because they live that life day by day. Not the armchair survivalists that go out for a few days or even a few weeks out in the wild (often with an SUV for their gear).
Joe himself has shown a few favorite knives of his, among them was a Cold Steel Espada XL. Now that knife will also have the edge chip like crazy when chopping the upper side/edge of a car door, and also the tip breaks also easily when stabbing into wood and then bend the knife sideways. Multiple breakages. In the end it's the skill not the knife. The knife can make it easier ofcourse. In the jungle , a machete is more of use than a SAK. But from what I've seen you being capable of with the little Victorinox... Most cannot accomplish with a 'indestructible' knife.

If you have a gray frame arround the lens you have an old model. This lens is stronger but smaller.

I don't know..then the sunrays are for sure not that strong.... But if you compensate that with a bigger lense it will work for sure.
The trouble with using charcloth as tinder is that you have to have some with you. You can make charcloth, of course, but for that you need fire, and if you have fire, then you don’t need to make fire.
So it’s good that most of your tinder examples are things we are likely to find around us.

Haaa ha haaa, ja genau das mit den erschweren Bedingungen ist so. mein Jüngster ist jetzt 8. Da wirds besser... die können sich schon gut selbst beschäftigen..
I guess they changed the focal length with these new style magnifiers? On my (1990s) Swiss Champ the focal length was almost identical to the distance from the lens to the scale furthest away from it, allowing you to set the knife on a surface above whatever you were doing and use both hands while looking through the lens. Prime example was when my then girlfriend got a knot in a very fine gold chain and I untangled it using two sewing needles and my SAK.

Felix, the moss from the stalks of trees works very well, its lower layer is close to the trunk. The bottom layer is always dry and is well ground by hand into a fine fraction. With a lens, it should be a good tinder.

Great Trick Felix, especially the device to fix the distance. Can you include a "making of"?
Currently, there are only 6 knives in the 91mm section, which have the lens.
the evolution 23's lens is way too small, the explorer doesn't "ring my bell" and the over 4 are swisschamps, which pull your pants down, if you carry them around on a daily basis...
Is there any chance for a revival of the YEOMAN? On of the greatest sak's there ever was, sadly dicontinued long before my interest in saks revived...

I think both are more accelerant than tinder. They only work if you already have a flame...

The old Victorinox magnifying glass that had a grey body and was made of glass, I believe it had more magnification. Despite being small, would it be easier to light a tinder with it? And in that case, would there be a way to customize the magnifying glass and color it like a thread counter magnifying glass with higher magnification?
i don't know exactly. But i guess, that a lager diameter is more important then a stronger lens...

The magnifier on the old Champion [Maxim] was small in diameter but it was glass. The magnifier on the Swiss Champ is plastic, but a bigger diameter. How do they compare?
The old Lense was stronger but smaller in Diameter
