  • Imagine if you were given the opportunity to go beachcombing in the drained moat of a medieval castle in Europe.
That once-in-a-lifetime chance was given to Jason Sandy and friends who were asked by the Museum of London and Historic Royal Palaces to conduct an archaeological survey of the moat surrounding the ancient Tower of London castle which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In preparation for the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in June 2022, the moat was partially excavated to install a new irrigation system to water the new “Superbloom” gardens consisting of 20 million wildflowers.
Jason gave a talk about his unique experience and showing us the extraordinary artifacts they found while searching the medieval moat. You won’t believe the incredible history they uncovered, which dates back to the Middle Ages!

So glad to be able to see Jason and the other mudlarks who were able to participate in this amazing, historic event. The Thames Society of Mudlarks and MOLA do an incredible job in preserving these historic artifacts, especially those from the Moat at the Tower. Thank you!

The Cap badge from a Scots Guard is a great find! I love all the pottery and loved that they used the moat as a flower bed space for the Queens 70th Anniversary of her Coronation!

You're welcome. I really like the medieval floor tile too. I wish it could speak and tell us about the people who stepped on the tile hundreds of years ago.

Interesting finds ; it will be interesting to compare these with the official archaeological report . I am from Scotland and was interested to see the spongeware. The brown rim printing is a rarer palette for spongeware in Scotland . Historically Scottish regiments could be found on the frontline . French / English history is very turbulent . The Auld Alliance with the Scots / French is more interesting and reflective of the Royal bloodlines. As a Fifer ; I would love to think the spongeware originated in Fife from the kilns of David Methven ; however it could also feasibly be Irish or Welsh ; who used the brown palette also . Richard 111's remains were found buried under a car park ;perhaps poetic justice .

Thanks for the information about Scottish spongeware. I will let you know when the archaeologists post their report.

Hi Jason, Your discussion and photos of what you and four other Mudlarking men found metal detecting the castle moat is awesome and educational! I was engrossed throughout your video after reading about it on Beaching Magazine’s email.
I have several books on Mudlark finds from licensed longtime Mudlarkers, and each has become a repeat read. The color photographs add greatly to the subject matter!! I look forward to buying your book, reading about your finds, and the sections including several other Mudlarkers from young to old!!
Wishing you great success with your book!
    Cheers,
    Pam Korinke
