You NEED to add some things that get rid of maximum hand-size, otherwise you'll have to discard a bunch of stuff you put back in your hand, especially if you're drawing with cantrips. Thought vessel, reliquary tower, and spellbook all seem like good ideas.
Library of Leng is also an interesting inclusion, as it helps you against decks with a heavy amount of discard effects. Often times, the best angle your opponents can aim for to deal with an up-and-running Feather is to deal with your hand while you lack the mana to "save" your important cantrips or protection cards.
That said, Thought Vessel and Reliquary Tower have both been adequate for me, just make sure you have as little colorless lands as possible to better ensure your odds of landing Feather with protection backup early in the game.
@@XCodes I was going to disagree, but I'm thinking of this a couple different ways now. If you actually had 8 cards in hand and they were all 1CMC Red or White spells, you WOULD actually want to have them all be colored sources, though the deck does have 26 instants/sorceries that have generic mana in their cost out of 54 total. Then there's Wayfarer's Bauble (lol had to), but for real, there are the artifacts that have generic costs too. It just seems unlikely that there will be entirely colored spells in your hand if you do indeed have too many cards in hand.
If it were me, I'd probably just keep the deck as it is, play it 5 times, and then decide if I really need those hand-aid cards. I just envision a time where I have cards that answer other cards/lands/artifacts, and then 3 pump spells, and no good attacks. That would feel bad, but it might be rare and the extra large hand wouldn't have mattered anyways.
Just dump your bad cards. If you are casting 7 spells every turn and getting them all back I am pretty sure you are fine with the cards you have in your hand. What is the point of keeping more? Whenever I draw a ton of cards and discard down to the best 7 I am just fine with that.
@@XCodes trust me if you have played this deck and had a one mana draw one you will feel the power of not discarding at that point its not card quality that matters its the quantity having serveral protection spells, lands, pump spells, and ramp. when you have all that in your hand you have SO MANY OPTIONS not to mention it makes it much harder for your opponents to get rid of your engine. i reccomend trying out a few, so worth it!

The Commander's Quarters, break the bank on Feather is actually still pretty dang budget, which might be my favorite thing about the deck.

@@XCodes Teferi's protection is not even close in a 100 dollar budget maybe 200-300 dollars. Sunforger is a good idea but not a toolbox based around it the deck has great draw and reuses cards already it needs better win conditions you would drop half your budget to be able to search for bombs that you didn't put in the budget. Chandra's ignition, Sunforger, Seize the Day, Fell the Mighty auto include. A good 20 bucks to mana options at least steam-kin, sol ring, commander tower + sphere. The rest of the budget token build is going to be most cost effective because you can put in low cost cards as improvements and have some great wincons going wide and protect a little better from it makes the stuff in the deck synergize and stomp on things and it lets you double down with combat + noncombat damage with fling style effects and get way more ramp.
If you add just teferi's enlightened tutor magnetic theft and sunforger you are already over 100 dollars and have no toolbox. :D
One card will do that for you, Sword of feast and famine and a couple of fetches for Sword of feast and famine.

Nice deck tech, looking forward to trying my hand at a modified version of this. I do appreciate you mentioning what cards you would swap out for the upgrades, that was something that took me quite a bit of time to figure out myself with the Arcades deck.
[[Walking Atlas]] is a bit of a hidden gem, I think. It gives us an extra land drop on every turn, which we should be able to make since Feather draws so many cards. Her decks seem to be quite hungry for extra mana.
[[Reckless Rage]] is an extremely mana efficient removal spell that comes back, so I'd definitely include it.
[[Stand Firm]], gives Feather +1/+1 and lets us scry 2. Scrying multiple times in a row gets less effective of course, once you've left a card on top. But ideally you'd use it to find a one mana cantrip and then interchange between casting Stand Firm and that cantrip.
I'm not sure if I like the "2 mana draw a card" cantrips: The difference between drawing four cards for four mana and drawing them for eight mana is going to be big. I would keep the ones that have useful effects, like Psychotic Fury, but not the two you mentioned near the start.

A card I definitely want to put in this decklist you have here is grafted exoskeleton, because you're never going to unequip it the only time it would get unequipped as if your opponents were to play a spell that takes control of your turn or plays Armory automaton

I feel like the draw cards that feather uses are going to be the fastest ones to rise in price. It's going to be such a popular deck.
fun deck to start with. It gave me some ideas for my first commander deck (i had a lot of fun in standard last year with Feather). thinking of making an alternate creature type build too with goblinslide, Young Piromancer, Guttersnipe, etc.
These are some great card choices, I'm definitely gonna be adding some to my own feather deck

Personally I go wide for one card.
Zada, Hedron Grinder is great with Feather.
As long as you’re going wide, Young Pyromancer + Path to Exile, for ramp and tokens (and, of course, a good removal spell once ramp is done)
A card I really like for this commander for its flexibility is Fury Charm. Normally you'd use it for the +1/+1 and trample, but I really like that it's also potentially artifact removal if you need it, and if you're running Solemn Simulacrum, you can destroy the robot yourself to draw a card, and still get the spell back.
The main concern will be artifacts & enchantments. You can get around stuff like Lignify with the Flicker cards, but you also need removal to get through pillowfort cards and stuff like Sandwurm Convergence.
It'd take out some of those 6:50 weaker versions of other cards that are already in the deck, in favor of another card like Purify, Tempest of Light or Akroma's Vengeance.

I made a Feather Tiny leader deck. Glad to see so much overlap between what I chose and what you chose. I included inquisitors flail though because the doubled damage is insane and with protection spells the doubled damage done to feather isnt tough to deal with.

5:07 Quick note about Reckless Charge: if you ever cast it for its Flashback cost, you can choose to go with Feather's ability and have it return to your hand at the next end step, instead of letting it go into exile permanently. This probably won't come up all that often but if you have to discard to hand size, targeted Flashback cards are a safe option.
Incidentally, this also makes Past in Flames an incredibly cool card for this deck. Past In Flames itself flashes back into exile, of course, but every pump spell you cast from your graveyard with it will end up back in your hand at the end of turn.

yay i was waiting this deck. i usually dislike boros i commander because it doesnt draw many cards and im out at the first board wipe, but this deck can work just good.
Solar Blaze can be a cool boardwipe for the deck too, since Feather survives to it

I would love to see your take on Trostani, Selesnya's Voice. My personal commander and I ended up spending around 120$ on her, so it would be interesting to see a budget take.

I decided to pick up a copy of Feather and I love how easy it is to build something potentially insane on such a small budget. A lot of the key pieces are just inexpensive common and uncommon instants and sorceries.
I also happen to have a couple of copies of Chandra's Ignition from when I was opening Origins packs. That's going to be fun. Or Seismic Shift to be a complete jerk. Oh, or Grapeshot to abuse how you're going to be casting a lot of 1-2 mana spells. Have the original copy of Grapeshot target Feather so you get it back, and have all the other copies either pepper something important or an opponent's face. Not quite Chandra's Ignition, but it seems fun. Maybe something like Fireball as well, where you can pay one extra mana to ping Feather for one and get it back to do it again.
I got 2 feathers during a draft. One of them foil. Looking forward to building this deck.
Also looking forward to building a Niv-Mizzet Reborn deck. That one may be too hard to build on a $25 budget while being focused. If you decide to use the guild gates in the deck, I wonder if you will also include Maze's End. If the budget won't allow it, I would still run Maze's end if the guild gates are in the deck.

Best possible upgrade for Feather: Sunforger, it is god tier artifact for this deck.
It is solid but not god tier :D
I'd also recommend running outmaneuver and some extra creatures like Guttersnipe, weaver of lightning, young pyromancer, etc.
Some good upgrades are spark of creativity, path to exile, swords to plowshares, grapeshot and spawning breath

Considering your design will often leave you with a hand full of instants and sorceries with plenty of mana on the field for casting them, you might consider tectonic reformation to give excess land in your hand cycling in the later stages when you already have all the land you need, but really need a particular instant or sorcery.
Loving the video! Voltron is definitely the way to go for Feather, but in my deck I added: Guttersnipe, Sentinel Tower, Thermo-Alchemist, Firebrand Archer and Electrostatic field in order to have ping damage, is that a good choice or no?
My only upgrades would be adding in two lands, and one enchantment.
The first is, Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion. This allows for Feather to gain double strike, particularly where you play something like Seize the Day.
The second land is Slayer's Stronghold. This allows for a +2/+0 boost, haste, and vigilance.
The enchantment is Reconnaissance -- because you can untap Feather and remove her from combat, even after combat damage is done.

I opened Feather at an FNM, and I owned 80 of the cards that made it in my version. I exceeded this show's budget on one card (Monastery Mentor).

VERY awesome Artifact/Enchantment-Removal: Orim's Thunder. It is an Instan, 2W: destroy target Artifact/Enchantment. Kicker R: It deals Damage eqaual to it's CMC to target Creature. So destroy all of them for 4 Mana each in Instant speed.

Hey new Player here I was wondering one thing. Once you get all the Spells you used that turn back from Feather in your End Step, do you have to discard any card that is over the 7 card hand limit? Or does feather trigger in such a way that you circumvent that?
I recently got a feather and have yet to play commander, Boros would certainly be my prefered choice and this guide seems perfectly timed.
I already have the Boros guild kit, so I guess I can grab a few cards from that, at least for mana and iirc it has a Boros Charm in it.
Would it be worth buying any of the precon commander decks for value?
I live in the UK and I'm not sure how convenient buying singles is going to be.
You should add smothering tithe for mana advantage over time, reliquary tower/spellbook/thought vessel for no max handsize to take advantage of the cards we get back, and maybe elixir of immortality for card loss mill (maybe), I’d have to test her out to see if she is even remotely at risk of running out of steam.

This will be my first commander deck, much more of a constructed - standard player, so a quick question if i may, as I have the Shock & Check lands, should 1 of each go in the deck? I guess they might be expensive even for the reasonable upgrades section at the end, as their impact per $ is probably low, but theirs no reason not to if I have them right? - Thanks for the videos, and looking forward to trying this out :)

Guttersnipe is probably good for getting around pillowfort strategies.

Do you think swapping out a plains for memorial to glory would be a good idea? It would help the deck play around sacrifice effects that many of the protection spells don't stop and only makes the mana slightly slower.
etb would be good with all of the flicker effects. an etb removal might be better than wear and tear. Duergar Hedge-Mage "could" replace it. Cataclysmic Gearhulk is a nice wrath. it has repeat value. have 2 spare mana and you blink him and get the effect again before your next turn.
Feather can be very vulnerable to wheels and discard effects, so depending on the meta, Library of Leng might be a good option to add resiliency to deck. Also I believe that Downhill Charge and Scars of the Veteran would be good cards to run. This is mostly due to the alternate casting costs that are available if mana is tight
In response to a wheel, can't you just cast spells out of your hand and then get them back on your end step?
@@davidjones7606 you can if the mana is available, but in other Feather deck techs that I've seen mana is pretty tight. Mostly because Boros doesn't have much of a ramp package. And given on how aggressive this deck is holding up mana to save cards from wheels may not be the best strategy. Other alternatives to Library of Leng that could be considered includes Dreadhorde Arcanist and Past in Flames since Feather's ability will let recasted cards come back to hand at the end of turn
My big miss for this deck tech is that it focused too much on Feather's ability and didn't look at other Voltron commander things such as equipment and auras. In particular I think Inquisitor's Flail is a good support for the deck. Feather generally should be well protected and difficult to block so Inquistor's Flail means we only need to get to 10, not 20. Add in Double Strike and a mere Civic Saber or Darksteel Axe is enough for Feather to cut down foes.
In general, if it doesn't cantrip out by drawing or have scry I would rather play it as equipment. This solves a sizable amount of the handsize issues others have raised while also freeing up mana for turns where we might need it more to protect her more intensely as others have reconized the threat. While they are more vulnerable to being removed, Auras could also pump up Feather more reliably or help protect her through something like Gift of Immortality.
I know it may not be on your radar to a mono red deck, but maybe a reverse aggro hate deck built around Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs. He has a really interesting ability for a red creature, because instead of wanting to aggro players, he wants to draw their attention and wants creatures to attack you. Then for each creature, unless the opponent pays 3 colorless, you get to make a 3/3 ogre creature token. Maybe worth a shot as he's already a very inexpensive commander.
I would add some creatures that also hace effects when they're targeted... creatures with heroism for example
Something like Deafening Silence or Archon of Emeria that limits the amount of spells you can cast per turn would throw a serious wrench in this deck's works
She's so good. I decided on an angel tribal however. Some good utility creatures are Guttersnipe, Thermo-Alchemist and Pyre hound. Excellent damage output
Guttersnipe wins games so ridiculously fast in this deck. It’s a card that your opponents have to kill the moment it hits the board or they’ll be burnt to death.
That's also where Tajik and The Wanderer come in handy lol. Thermo-Alchemist is great as well because you can tap him and ping everyone and whenever you cast an instant or sorcery he untaps. Pyre Hound has trample and gets a +1/+1 counter with every spell as well. I've built the deck for big damage output
Dust Corona is a great card to add for super cheap (1 red and .25 cents or less) yes its an Enchantment - Aura, but since Feather has flying it makes her unblockable unless the other players have reach.

I found mizzix and animar far more budget power because lots of budget cards are just a few colorless more than top power cards with the same effect. Getting 4 6 8 colorless knocked off a mana price is more absurd than reusing small spells.
I would personally put in some creatures with the heroic ability, then again I am a defensive player but something like phalanx leader and akroan soldier which brings out 1/1 creatures and since we would be casting noncreature spells a card like student of ojutei would be a perfect fit for the deck for stalling for the game for us to get what we need
