The Difference Between Operations and Strategy

  • Operations and strategy are like two separate, but related, engines on a boat. Both engines propel the boat forward. And while forward movement can occur with only one engine, the boat moves faster and is more responsive if both are running efficiently.

Maybe strategy as the steering wheel and operations as the engines?

yep, it is a better analogy than two identical engines.

Agreed, esp. to highlight the differences between these two.

glad that was corrected, the analogy was annoying me. you cant run on strategy alone. that's no engine at all.

Given how old this video is, I figure you might not see this comment. But you might want to know that the textbook company Cengage is using you video (with credit, but I don't know if it's with payment) in their textbook Operations and Supply Chain Management by David A. Collier and James R. Evans. If they aren't paying you, you might want to look into this. I've already had one other content creator this semester tell me they did not know that their work was being used in this way.

Just saying, the analogy of boat engines is pretty shitty one having no connection to the relation of strategy and operations.
