Brilliant move one the spline. I didn’t quite understand why until I watched the video a second time and saw where is added structural support on the end of rail. Awesome work!
Great idea to rotate the grain in the castle joint! I was about to run into a similar project and this video happened to be in my feed. Was glad to see it! I also appreciate a fellow woodworker whose shop also acts as storage for family stuff. :)
Check your DeWalt Compund Miter saw, models DWS779, DWS780, & DWS790 saws were recently recalled for a safety issue. If it was manufactured between 2019-2022, it has a plastic rear guard assembly that can shatter or break exposing the saw blade creating a laceration risk. If it was made before that, it should have a metal piece not prone to the same failure.
Well thanks CZcams algorithm! I actually designed a bed just like this about a week ago (except it had a headboard.) This was some really high quality editing, great video!
Beautiful job~!! This is exactly what I want to do for a king-sized mattress to replace our queen-sized sleigh bed. I just need to decide on the mattress I'm going to buy in order to obtain the dimensions.
Wonderful to watch and such amazing dedication to the craft of woodworking. This would be a wonderful set of skills to pass on to the next generation and stop some of the high tech worship.
This saw so satisfying to watch. Only thing that works make this better is if you had more details in the video description. You can help us support you if you put affiliate links to the items you used. And also a list of the the measurements and boards used would be helpful to viewers.
I’ve made a castle joint table before. I wish I had known then about the spline, what a great method! The patience you show when making this is becoming rare today!
what happens if you dont have that spline in the castle joint. There seems to be more than enough distribution of stress in the joint. Also I bet its fine with a table, you don't usually have 300 pounds of weight plus and mattress on a bed all the time.
@@Kaodusanya Weight is not the issue. Just a little lateral movement can snap the tab at the end right off. So he added the cross grain going up and down. Then cut the notch. Like splitting wood. It splits easy with the grain but not against it.
Remember to turn on the air conditioning when working in your shop and there will be minimal sweat. If your shop does not have AC, you should consider adding it. Makes it so much more enjoyable to work, when you are comfortable.
Really enjoyed the vid. I am thinking of making the same type but in maple. Do you see a problem if I made my endposts 7 inches square and 18 inches high? I will likely add a taper like yours but not as much. How would you attach a headboard? You should make more projects. Thanks
Mesmerizing build! I've watched this at least a dozen times. Great idea for re-enforcing with a spline. Others have skipped this part with inevitable breaking. Love the using of biscuits for alignment of add on rails, strength! I've been practicing with a length of 6/4 reidwood and really knew I'd need a spline. Your method is really on the mark. Thanks My dimensions have been 1 1/8 thick to do a build up for the castle. Works okay but the overall dimension is 3 3/8. I think your 4 1/2 is better looking for a kingsize. How much of drop do you have for the mattress, I was thinking an inch would work and give the bed a 22-24 inch height. Your thoughts? Thanks again for such an informative and enjoyable video.
I believe it was an inch and a half drop, but once I added the slats it was under an inch. I do experience a little bit of mattress drift, and I have to push the mattress back into place every so often.
@@lucaguarro6116 The spline is arranged so that the grain is at 90° compared to the rail. This prevents the end of the rail at the notch from splitting off along the grain.
This video is beauty from beginning to end. The music, the craftsman's love of the work, his commitment to excellence, clear and concise instruction without words, the end result even more beautiful than the Thuma bed waiting for me to assemble and last, the stretching cat. Perfect. Thank you Peaceful Woodworker.
I'm curious how much this project cost you in material? With the surge in hardwood prices this year, I bet this cost almost as much as the original Thuma. Thank you. Great video. High quality work.
I got about 55 board feet of cherry to start. I still have about 20 board feet left. I bought the wood in August 2020 when the the prices weren’t that bad. I probably spent $400 on the wood and felt. Cool thing about this bed was there was no hardware needed.
@@thepeacefulwoodworker9356 thank you so much. Yeah I immediately fell in love with this design when I saw the ad but didn't want to spend $900 on it. When prices come down a little more, I'll attempt this. I'm subscribing to your channel!
The bit about making the castle joint stronger is so important. Excellent craftmanship and video.
Beautifully filmed, concisely explained, masterfully built! Thank you for this thoroughly enjoyable video journey!
Amazing job. I’m making one of these now and it’s definitely the most challenging thing I’ve built so far. Lots of great advice in this video!
Beautiful wood and Excellent craftsmanship !!!
Very nice work. Most people lack your love for the craft, skills, and patience.
👏👏👏
Brilliant move one the spline. I didn’t quite understand why until I watched the video a second time and saw where is added structural support on the end of rail.
Awesome work!
The spline addition is fantastic !
Very nice design, realized with a lot of patience, a lot of skill and a lot of dedication. Thanks for the inspiring video 🙋♂️
One of the most beautiful videos I've ever seen. Wonderful job, thanks for sharing.
Nice work. The splines at the castle joint for strength was genius and added to the look when stained. I love working with cherry.
Yess sir ☺☺☺
first time I saw splines being used and he's right about it.
i don't understand how the splines add strength for the castle joint
The splines are positioned at a 90 degree angle to go against the wood grain. Otherwise the notch in the joint will break along the grain.
Thank you for sharing this video. I wish I had your level of talent and patience.
This was an incredible video! Amazing work and I love the two tone on the joinery.
Loved this build .. thanks! Can't wait to see more videos :)

It's funny, this style of woodworking video is so much more straightforward and easily digestible.
☺☺☺☺☺☺
Loving the spa treatment wood shop vibe!
Nicely done. Good detail about crossing the grain for strength
The spline is a nice touch. The center piece supporting the slats is thoughtful. Nicely done!
I’ve seen people build it without the spline and it’s a big mistake. It will tare out with a little force if you don’t have that spline.
Excellent work, love that you rounded the legs at the end

Also the use of hand tools, and doing things by hand is awesome!
great great job, especially with hand tools. well done
haha I was REALLLLLY hoping someone would post this and you did! Thanks!
This is an amazing piece of work. Congratulations. Im going to try it for my son.
Absolutely beautiful! Both the work and the video by itself! The use of hand tools is so cool to watch and your work is top notch! Respect to you sir!

Would love to see your piece as well.
Excellent video. I've been thinking about attempting this myself. If I ever get off my butt and do it I'll use you wonderful example. Thanks!
A work of art ! Well done
Just started my build, thanks for the video it will help!
Excellent job Amigo!
Great job on the project and super helpful video for my upcoming build! Keep those videos coming and you'll definitely have a ton of people watching.
Gorgeous work!
Looks great. Good job 👍
Loved the music and the build man. Thanks.
I'm thinking of doing this myself for our daughters room. Love the video style and lack of talking, just explanations in text throughout the video.
Beautifully done video without any promise or hint or DL suggestion of "easy and cheap". Because of that I could enjoy it.
Excellent job!
Holy cow. Yours looks 100 times better than Thuma's because of the nice cherry grain and the oil finish!
A most excellent video! Subscribed!
Beautiful work
Nicely done!

Awesome project and amazing last song. Checking out that artist now

The channel name is very apropos to the overall substance and theme of this video. Very nice.

That’s beautiful.
Great job. Can see more of your great talent?
Beautiful, give us more
Nice work! You get a lot out of your space.
Glad I came across this. I'm actually wanting to make one of these for my daughter instead of buying a Thuma.
Hi, Great Job!! My wife really likes the stain color you used on the cherry. What is the stain color/number on the Watco can?
Beautiful man
I need to buy 2 from you lol Full size 🙏🏾

Dude, you’re speaking a foreign language 😅
My level of carpentry ends with sparkling and a Philips screwdriver
why does the spline make it stronger?

my bed is similar but much higher for more compfort and without any kind of metal
just i like it
Brilliant work and craftsmanship!
Can I ask why the ends of the long supports were cut out on the ends and then filled in with another piece of wood?
To add strength to the joint. The spline is glued in with the wood grain running perpendicular to the wood grain of the rail.

Bravooooo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Do you have any building plans for this?
