What's your favorite part of Geoff's take on this classic Christmas tune?
I love that he stayed low for most of the verse, not just his classic bomb-drop! Ending was f'in sick!!
I love how much fun you could tell he was having with it all. Sounded like he was smiling while he was singing most of the time.
Honestly it's watching the other 3 geoffs reactions to things appearing out of nowhere
I loved his "new" verse in the middle of the song and the stlye change (syncopation?). I didn't recognize that section.
The harmonizing high part tends to always tends to be my favorite one out of the whole song
When Irving Berlin wrote the song, he had this as the beginning verse:
The sun is shining, the grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway
There’s never been such a day
In Beverly Hills, L. A.
But it’s December the 24th
And I am longing to be up north….
(And from there lead into the chorus of "White Christmas", which we all tend to think of as the song itself)
The first time I heard those beginning lines was when Barbra Streisand sang it on her "A Christmas Album", which was released in 1967. When I heard it on that album, I assumed it was a special piece written for her, and would not learn until years later that it was how Irving Berlin had originally intended the song to begin. Don't know if it was Bing's preference to drop it that lead to it not being included when it was introduced in "Holiday Inn" or reprised in "White Christmas", but I have read that Bing did not sing it in any versions until his televised Christmas special in 1968.
Like the 'lost' beginning version of "Over the Rainbow" (I first heard that verse sung again by Barbra and a couple of years later by Mandy Patinkin), it was very surprising to hear for the first time, but I have come to really prefer to hear it included.
This follows the Tin Pan Alley Verse/Chorus song form. There are many songs from this period that we only know the chorus. The verses have been "lost".
The Beverly hills line would not have made sense in context in the White Christmas movie….which, by the way is not a Christmas movie, ha ha.
Bing Crosby actually sings it in three movies - First in Holiday Inn (1942), then Blue Skies (1946), and finally White Christmas (1954)
I believe The Carpenters included that intro in their rendition.
@@r3adrpro811 wow didn’t know that.
In addition to the arrangement, singing and production; I love the bit of humor Geoff throws in.
Please don't let Geoff's Blue Christmas get by without your comments - I'll call it my Christmas present! Loved your grin at the end!
This version was originally done by The Drifters, which has been my favorite version. Geoff is adding so much to it with his rich, chocolatey base.
You were asking about the line THE SUN IS SHINING those words are normally at the beginning of the song and the first time I heard those words was in a Neil Diamond Christmas special that consists with his first Christmas album released in 1992 inwhich he also made it a do-whop
Every time Geoff scoops up to a note the horn player in me silently winces.
Geoff’s singing range is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL . 💯
At 10:50 seconds, im pretty sure Geoff hit a G1. That is a crazy low note that I've only ever heard him hit 2 or 3 times now, that was just the longest I've heard him hold that note. Man has talent for sure!.
A little history: White Christmas was debuted in 1954 in the movie Holliday Inn (later renamed White Christmas). The minute he started singing I saw the scene in the movie where Bing Crosby opens a sliding barn door to snow falling thus saving Holliday Inn.
While both movies take place in "inns" and have stage shows, Holiday Inn and White Christmas are very different movies made a dozen years apart. Holiday Inn costars Fred Astaire and Marjorie Reynolds and is in black and white. White Christmas costars Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney (George's aunt) and Vera-Ellen and is in glorious Vista-Vision and color.
@@r3adrpro811 you are so right. At the time White Christmas came out came out it was called a remake of Holliday Inn even though having live entertainment & an inn were the only common parts.
Geoff's version of the song actually seems to be built off of the Michael Buble version of White Christmas. It's still his own, but it just evokes the same style to me with a country flair. Incredible as always!
Hello Peter, I love your comments on Geoff Castellucci version of I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas
What I love in this, apart from the singing, is the beautiful smile he keeps giving us. He really seems to be having so much fun in this one. What part of the singing do I live best? Hard to choose, the harmonies are wonderful, as always, but I think I think his higher part, by Geoff in white sweater, is particularly pleasing. But yes, G1 Geoff does it again. Lovely reaction.
Never gets old how you break it down from a place of experience, knowledge, respect and enjoyment. 🤙🤙
I love that he included the original verse. The song has more emotion in it when you realize it's about homesickness during the holidays
Here to feed the algorithm! Always love to hear your analyses of Geoff's works
I always enjoy your reactions and analyses. It's fun watching someone talk about something that they are passionate about ... even if I don't necessarily understand all of it. I really enjoyed seeing the notes on the screen. That was a nice touch and helped me get a clearer picture of what we were hearing. And Geoff never fails to impress. His videos are always super creative and the interactions between Geoff, Jeoph, Jeff, and Goff are perfect. ✌️❤️🥕
Peter, thank you for singing and demonstrating styles and notes. Goosebumps, heart swoon over your voice too. You truly deserve to be singing with Geoff, Tim, Avi, and Peter Hollens.
My favorite part is not even the music this time, it's that he's smiling throughout. So much of his recent music has been dark, sad, or scary, that we haven't seen his great big grin. It is great to see him having fun!
Now my favorite part of your reaction was the unrestrained joy on your face with that last run.
Thanx for reacting to this. I hope you are planning to react to Voiceplay's Christmas Don't Be Late. Geoff is bouncing all over the place in that one, and his Disney Princess makes another appearance. Just so ya know!
Irving Berlin wrote that part Geoff used as the bridge as the intro. For some reason, none of the covers use that. I like the fact that Geoff used it.
"breaking all the rules, bad Santa" brillant comment 🤣
I literally first saw this comment the moment Peter was saying this 😂😂
@@bruno5336 great timing 😆
The different lyrics are part of the original song that Irving Berlin wrote, but it seems no one records that verse. It's usually at the beginning.
Really loved having the notes come on the screen. And as always your reactions and analysis are great.
he reminds me of a jazzier version of Bing Crosby, just lower. His harmonies are great too. It sounds like he is including the words for Christmas in LA. Nice analysis Peter
I'm used to Geoff dipping down to a low note or two but his sustained passage down low was fantastic.
Great analysis as always, Peter. And your stunned expressions when Geoff drops toward the center of the earth give me the giggles. Thanks for that.
I get the giggles too.
And this is why I watch reaction videos so much... Since I listen only to a VERY small number of artists, I forget that G1 is supposed to be an abnormally low note because that is nowhere near his bottom.
love to see u enjoyin geoff now
You should definitely review his Take me home country roads! It’s pit viper central
That section with the verse you didn't know, is actually the original beginning to the song. Then it goes into white Christmas.
Your analysis with demonstrations made me long for a whole cover by yourself as well.As if it wasn't already a fact.
I love it because it is different and much nicer to listen to than other versions
I have been awaiting your review with anticipation! Geoff is ridiculous, in the best way possible. His vocals are so good, as we all know. When you think you know where his arrangement is going, he'll throw a few curveballs in there just to keep us all on our toes. Finally, his videos for covers like this are so creative and obviously so meticulously prepared and executed. This was a super fun one, and thank you for another fine analysis!! Loved your happy face at the ending!!
I love how delighted you were through the entire reaction!
I love you interpretations , analysis of different artists. So different from other reactions that I view, extremely educational, excellent, there’s nothing wrong with holding on to “ old reliable “ they are very dependable, love your voice as well , grandma approved !
I really like your Geoff reaction videos
Hi! I like that you've added the pictures of the notes you're talking about; makes it more visual. Thanks for that!
Hey Peter! Great analysis, I really enjoyed it and your reactions to Geoff's mastery. Your enjoyment makes my own even better!
I love the way you always bring out parts and/or sounds I don't pick up on my own. You continue to enhance my experience with each analysis you do. Thank you Peter! I also believe there is no way to go wrong with any of Geoff's videos, I love that man. What talent and a continual joy to listen to!
Peter I really need to say thank you, when I listen to music i did not know that i just focus on the lead or highest pitch. You have opened up a whole new world to me, especially with the BASS, I can let that go by completely unnoticed, shame on me 🙈my ear naturally tunes in to these, with your reactions and the Bass Gang content, have given me a whole new world of music, that's massive and all down to you.
You are now the permanent background audio of my day. Always learning something new
Can you PLEASE bless us with a version of White Christmas? Just YOU? no arrangement needed :) just YOU??
Peter your voice sounds so much like the original version voice
Geoff’s version is quite similar to Bing Crosby as far as phrasing with the pauses. I had to go listen to Bing after hearing him, but it is a bit similar. Geoff makes it bouncier too. I know I enjoyed this version. Thanks for the great reaction.
At least according to Google there was a lot new by Geoff Catellucci from the original song. Always excellent music and analysis. I like seeing the notes on the score.
Actually I just found the new verse Geoff sung, it was in the Billy Gilman version of the song!
As always Peter, love your analysis and reaction! Geoff is showing he can be a crooner like Bing and I am here for it. I now want more...lol. The verse was original verse when the song was first released. I love it!
As always, an enjoyable and insightful reaction and analysis! 😊 I'm not sure if you have seen or reacted to Voiceplay's "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch," but it is both a funny and unique take on the song.
Geoff never disappoints ❤🏴
Peter, this was a great reaction. But your reactions ALWAYS are great. I appreciate the depth of knowledge that you bring us along to, it greatly enhances my listening. Thanks for a super job.
Geoff also make a version of this song in voiceplay channel 7-8 years ago.In the end while comparising G1s you can really see how much geoff enhances his low notes and gets his range lower than that G1.and in just 7 years geoff massively imroved everything
Your unbridled glee at the aeolian going down is *chef's kiss*
Great analysis-as always! I really like the new addition of adding the note to the screen. A nice visual to aid my learning.
Yup, that "Malibu" bridge *was* (is?) part of the original, as written by Irving Berlin... The song was originally written for the movie "Holiday Inn," in 1943. But I can't remember if the line was kept in the movie.
The fact that he seems to have a *thicc* G1 in chest pretty much any time he wants will never stop blowing my mind. The lowest I reliably have at any time is C#2, I'm trying to get that Low C to be more consistent.
I think it's from Holiday Inn which is the old black and white film.
Really enjoy your analysis!
Great reaction and analysis! Loved your expressions as much as the Geoff's in the video. And was that a bit of a Bing impersonation from you? Would love to hear more of that!! Thank you!
Literally as soon as I heard this cover I immediately thought you were gonna love this because of the aeolian cadence at the end. Great analysis as usual Peter! I always learn a lot from watching your videos :)
The card is a nod to his mele kalikimaka from last year
15:50 How smart
This is such a great version! I love watching your eyeballs pop out. It just proves that even though we know what Geoff is capable of, he can still surprise us!
Love our Geoffy Geoff ♥
Great analysis.
Great reaction, Peter! Love learning more about the music from you. Merry Christmas! 😄
Genuinely love your analyses and breakdowns. Worth watching the whole video.
Love this!
I really enjoy your analysis! I like Geoff's excursions into the bassment. (Spelling intentional) I also enjoy all of the video additions as it goes with the Geoffs being mystified by it all!
The part about the sun is shining in Beverly Hills LA is not new. It is an original lyric to the song. According to a couple of articles, I read Irving Berlin meant it as a satire to the LA Hollywood lifestyle since he was a New Yorker. If you think about it, it is written from the viewpoint of a Californian since we rarely see white Christmases. A New Yorker they rarely see anything else.
I did check several sources on that and I remember hearing it as a child. Of course I’m really really old so I have that over you. I also remember it being the Bing Crosby version rather than the one from The Platters.
Great reaction Peter.
Happy Holidays 🎀
thanks peter
Your Geoff reactions always make me happy.
Thank you Peter for your time and sharing your professional opinions. Glad that good talent is appreciated. Geoff's G1s sound better than what I can produce on my Bb upright. I practice My lows to Geoff, Tim, Avi and of course the Bass Gang on my BBb to really Mimic the resonance. Guess I'm bass nut, always watch to the end. Have a safe and memorable Christmas.
fun!🎶
Yeah, I had the same look on my face from Geoff's thick G1s. I can sing a G1 in chest.... Geoff was sangin' them.
(Hello Mr Gorythm. Please take note of Mr Barber's works. Thank you.) In case the new one fails, old reliable's there. I guess we know how the new one faired.
The gaps in the chorus are from the version by The Drifters which heavily inspired this arrangement. Their version was repopularized in the Home Alone and The Santa Clause films, and it also inspired Elvis' cover.
Also, I love watching your face go from Surprise to INCREDULOUS SHOCK! at 15:18 .
I always learn so much watching your reactions. This is one of my favorite Christmas songs, and I was excited to see Geoff had done a cover of it, and equally excited to see your reaction/analysis!
Hi Peter, I’ve really enjoyed your comments on the music, especially the ones on Pentatonix.😊
Merry Christmas!!
Hi there! I'm from the Philippines and it's my first time on your channel. I'm interested with your reaction esp I knew that you're a bass singer. Hope you find time to react to SB19. They are 5 member boy group who sing, dance, choreographed, produced, composed their own songs. Please react to their recent song 'MANA' performed live on Wishbus. It's a Tagalog (Filipino) song or to 'BAZINGA' it's an English song also performed on Wishbus. They're multi-talented group and is called the PPOP KINGS here in the Philippines. (There's a bass singer member in SB19 named Ken. He's the red hair guy). I subscribed THANKIEE
i was looking forward to you hearing the low part.
Thank you for your reaction and analysis Peter. It is always educational to hear what you have to say.
Very well done, sir. Recently started watching your reviews and analysis. Its always great to know that those of us on the bottom end still bear respect for the exceptional voices. You have an amazing instrument as well my friend. 💪🤚👍🖖😎
Thanks for the analysis. For the algorithm.
Peter, thank you for your insights. I feel entertained as well as schooled in the fine art of bass singing
This song is so cheerful.
Merry Christmas!
This verse was in the original. I remember the Christmas Special with Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton... She gave the origin of the song. Great review. Merry Christmas Peter. Wishing you love and light over the Holidays. Hugs from Newfoundland
So enjoyed this reaction. I always learn something when I watch your videos but my favorite part of this one was the near constant smiles on all the Geoffs and you through the whole thing. Great video and Happy holidays!
Desde Argentina... hola Peter!! Me encanta tu entusiasmo al reaccionar... siempre veo tus reacciones y, lo mismo que vos admiro muchísimo a Geoff... bravo Geoff y bravo Peter!
What a great reaction/analysis! I really liked hearing you sing some of the lines (you should do one next year!).
Peter has already done White Christmas.
Merry BASSmas peter
You caught so many points I didn’t catch until you pointed them out - thank you!
Nice reaction brother!! Loved every second of it!! Geoff never fails to amaze!
As usual Peter I enjoy your breakdown of the song and your channel as well. I thought Goeff's take on the Drifters version of White Christmas was very well laid out.
Great reaction brother! Yes, Geoff sets the bar for sure. Merry Christmas to you!
So fun. This made my day!
It’ holiday season!!! Can you please react to Oh Holy Night version from David Phelps and the non English opera version from legendary tenor of all time Jussi ?
To me, those are 2 best versions of Oh Holy Night
You are more than an algorithm. Great breakdown. Merry Christmas. 🎄
Very good, thanks!
Shouldn't people also check out your cover of the same song from 2 years ago for contrast/comparison? Or would that be a bit much? :)
