I watched concealer application techniques change in a wave after you hit CZcams. You're making the world a better place, babe. Thanks for saving us all from the triangle.
Yess I totally 100% agree with you đ€
This was so pleasant to see change!
That's so true
So true!
Ditto. I've been waiting for the concealer triangle trend to DIE already!
Are people forgetting that these influencers used to put tarte shape tape all over their face to the point it would lighten their foundation? đ Robert saved the beauty community with this concealer technique
Tarte is now made in China.
No he didnât. Wayne Goss did it before him. And he got it from someone else. Also trends change every decade. So it was time for the new generation to rebel and go from heavy to fresh makeup.
@@BbGun-lw5vi I never said Robert invented the technique, he did make it more widely known.
Well, if this is gonna become a competition called _Who was first?_ let' s name: Make Up Geek, Pixiwoo, Lisa Eldridge or MakeUpZone... Every decade?đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
@@sebumpostmortem I agree with you that there shouldnât be a competition of who was first. But people keep acting like Robert changed the game.
In the past century trends have changed hardcore every decade. Although the last decade has seen a rapid change in trends than ever before.
As a culinary graduate that âcooking has no rulesâ made me cackle a little because my former culinary professors would beg to differ. Cooking and baking is a science as much as it is an art form. Itâs similar to makeup in many ways. You learn the rules so you can learn how to break them in ways that are creative.
Same with music too
Pretty sure that was roberts point lol
@@blarmy827 and Iâm agreeing with him lol
đŻ! You know, after you learned the âbasics or rulesâ what you can change (in a recipe), so the food and desserts can be individual and different but super delicious. You can also experiment with different ingredients until you have it to your liking. đđ»
Yes! This is applies to any creative career/artistic endeavor. We have to learn and actively know the rules to then manipulate or break said rules successfully.
Just as someone who is a fine artist, thereâs no ârulesâ in creativity, but there is a set of general practices that are rules in fine art. I.e. you can paint oils over acrylics, but not acrylics on top of oils. Perhaps âthe art of makeupâ doesnât have limitations but you have to know what to do with the materials to access your creativity in makeup first before you start!
Totally! And just like how you learn how anatomy works in order to paint it, learning where to place things on the face is important for making it look how you want it to.
Absolutely Jane! I always say âlearn the rules so you know how to break themâ
@@RobertWelsh Exactly! Just like the late, great Kevyn Aucoin said! I knew youâd get it. Robert I appreciate you and your content! đđ€
@@LysolMyFace I completely agree. The face is a canvas and the ability to know/not know where to place makeup is a make or break thing. Thankfully we have information at our fingertips đ±
I had to look up why acrylic over oil is a no-no, and itâs because the acrylic will flake right off, apparently-which is a good example of a rule that exists to literally keep your art from being ruined!! There are absolutely rules like that in makeup too, makeup theory doesnât exist to stifle creativity, but to tell us how to use the tools we are given to create bomb-ass looks. Itâs built on chemistry, biology, psychology-things we canât change and must learn to work with.
Something I was taught in graphic design classes that i feel applies to everything: LEARN the rules before you decide to break them. Then you can break them intentionally for a particular purpose, and actually understand you're doing.
I think you should buy every single âblurringâ powder you come across and put them all to the test tournament style. đ„Ž Make the definitive guide. I trust that youâre correct of course hahaha.
That'd be fun to see lol
Omg yes March Madness style lol
Oooo yeees! He should make a form where we can suggest powders!
sounds like next twin channel video
YESSSS
Love what you say about makeup theory. I do watercolour painting. Lots of people hate painting with watercolour bc they only remember the paints they used as kids and never learned how to use it properly.
If you donât know the ârulesâ to watercolour painting, you make a muddy mess. I had to learn about colour mixing, water control and proper techniques to improve as a painter. So many people say âart has no rules! Do what you want!â but learning the rules helps sooo much.
Plus, once you learn a rule, if you decide you donât like it and it doesnât work for you, you can break the rule! It does you no harm to learn about it in the end.
Robert says âdo excuse my makeupâ whilst the words âwow that eye makeup looks greatâ just came out my mouth đđđ
HaHaHa⊠same!
âExcuse my makeup,â looks fabulous
I thought the eye makeup is stunning, such a beautiful palette of colours đ
I want to know all about his eye look. I think it's fabulous
What I was saying!
Loved the first lady. So straight forward, not annoying, actually helpful tips.
I really hated the concealer tiktok, they were so aggressive for no reason. I like you for being calm and guiding to better techniques without shaming
Yeah it almost came across as a bit elitist lol. Like, yeah, as a makeup artist you probably don't apply concealer from the doefoot. But 99% of the population aren't celebrity clients who have the time to sit in a chair getting their makeup done for however long it takes lol.
To me it was an automatic red flag when they specify "CELEBRITY" makeup artist
That was aggressive to you
She wasn't aggressive
Omg the âsmile and then put blush onâ thing RUINED me for so long, it made sense when I was originally taught it for stage makeup bc I would always be smiling but then nobody told me not to do it like that for real life makeup đ đ until Robert saved the day, of course! đ
I've tried both but I actually like it on my apples more because pinchable cheeks đ
Ok but lowkey you are the one that put EVERYONE on the âless concealerâ technique in my bookđđŒ
Frrrr!
I think a summary of the philosophy on makeup is: your makeup can look however you want, knowing the theory of makeup gives you the techniques to achieve the look you want
I'm glad you reexplained your concealer technique!!!! People copy the placement all the time but they use so much they end up blending it exactly in that old school "triangle". I cringe every time.
Make up has rules, food has rules, life has rules - because physics, chemistry, biology đ§Ș duh! Thank you for *the* common sense, Robert. You are truly a breath of much needed air in a industry saturated with questionable content. When it seems we are out on war with common knowledge I tend to come back to your videos to calm the nerves and get much needed inspiration. âšâ€ïž
As a a woman of a certain age, I have adapted lots of your techniques Robert. Thank you so much for helping this full coverage type of gal. đ
I didn't get into make up until lockdown and Robert and Jackie Aina were my tutors. Definitely in the woman of a certain age club. đ
About concealer placement and ânew techniqueâ: when I see people smearing the same amount of product as they use before in triangle shape but now placing it in two massive dots and stripes from outer corners to almost hairline (using a high coverage concealer) I wonder, is there any difference? đ Itâs still too much product under your eyes.
THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I think people don't realize that the more feathery, minimal application IS the technique. The shape of where you put it is, in my humblest of opinions, less important than knowing how much goo you need on your face-flesh. If you put too much goo on the flesh it doesn't matter where you put it or what shape it's in, it's too much goo.
I don' t know if it exists in english but we say: Same dog, different collar. đ Same crazy amount, different placement-shapeđ€Šđ»ââïž
Yes! I use this technique to cover the dark lines under my eyes so when I accidentally use too much it ruins the whole point of the technique. It becomes too thick and also I end up having to spread it out much further than I wanted to. And by putting it everywhere under the eye I donât get the effect of lifting that particular shadow area.
@@Captain_Pink exactly. I have big undereye circles and Iâve never liked high coverage concealer. Even a tiny dot of tarteâs shape tape looked bad. But two dots technique is good for me because I have visible veins on the outer part of my undereye area and it give me a bit of freshness. But still, I use tiny amount only to cover, not to give myself a lifting đ
Saying the camera doesnt pick up skin texture when their isnt any shine makes TOTAL sense! Were all being fooled by these tricks. Idk how ppl can think a powder will blur all their issues...in person its definitely still visible. Also the last video with that huge dirty brush! That cracked me up! My mom had a Shiesido brush from the 90's that she whipped out one day and it was horrid looking..i just said "NO MOM" and threw it away đ
I really love the analogy to cooking chicken, because it reminds me of an Indonesian guy who was teaching me to make satay. He mentioned how most of the Westerners he teaches hate dry chicken, but to him it wasn't that much of a big deal. Preference varies with culture - just like whether you care about your chicken being dry, you might not mind your face looking round; but it's important to know that cooking chicken for a long time will make it dry, just like your blush position will change the shape of your face.
Same with painting while itâs inherently creative each different type of painting has rules
I have mature skin, and tried to make these "influencer" makeup techniques work for months, struggling terribly! THANK YOU, Robert. You brought sanity to CZcams, and saved me from trying to make all these techniques work!đ€đ€đ€
I loved how you used cooking as an example. I'm a professional pastry chef/cake decorator and there are definitely RULES! You can wing it all you want, but there are rules to follow, and if you do, results will be so much better. Baking more so because of the chemistry of how things work together to make a delicious product. I have you to thank about using eye cream before applying concealer. I would get lines and crepey looking under-eyes after several hours of wear. Now it's lovely and magic and thank you for the tip! Also, that girl should have just bought her mom new brushes..đ€ą lol
Exactly! When I bake stuff for myself, I may not use a food thermometer to precisely check the temperature of my food like the recipe says to use, or I put the oven on a higher temperature, etc. Does it turn out exactly the same as if I followed the recipe? No, but I still have fun doing it and I like the end result anyways. You need to know the rules before you can start breaking them.
âCooking has no rulesâŠâ I laughed so hard at that. Awesome analogy.
Picturing Robert arrogantly serving me some $hit chicken. đ
Question is would you dare to send it back? đŹ
I have been washing my brushes with dish soap and it's literally spotless in seconds. Not a lot of soap, just a smidge. Works perfectly!! And if the brush doesn't last for decades because of it, it's fine.. A reason to buy new ones!! Highly recommend.
Same. I first lightly dip all the brushes in a capful of rubbing alcohol to disinfect and then use a brush mat with dish soap. I love cleaning my brushes-- so satisfying! The filthy one is the video made me gag. đ€ź
The Dr Bronners bar soap is just as good (I think itâs even better) and more gentle. Try it and youâll see. Amazing for beauty blenders too.
You could just make up remover and then, soft shampoo. When you pay 80$ on really good make up brush made with animals hair, you don't want to use dish soap, you could literally use them for the rest of us life if you take good care of it.
@@A_Foolish_Arrangement I only use synthetic brushes as I am staunchly against animal cruelty.
@@evydarling I think if you do the rubbing alcohol at the end it will make the brushes dry faster
You sliding out of frame after dropping the "Cooking has no rules" analogy đ€Ł Also I think those tips for over 40s at the start are useful for everyone no?
What I saw happen was that people would use the two spots of concealer method but they were smearing WAY too much product on those two areas right off the concealer wand. The whole point of your technique was to use LESS product. If you still use too much product on your eye it doesn't matter where you put it. I always put some product on the back of my hand and pick up a little with my brush, the wands just have too much product on it to apply it directly to my skin.
Yes. They took it and were like âclean girl make up little dotsâ but were applying the same amount they used to with their shape tape lol
It's all about quantity for concealer in your positioning! A teeny bit and keep it where you need it, then blend out. My baggage and circles look so good after adopting your technique... except if I use too much though carelessness.
Your concealer technique literally changed how I use makeup. I thought I couldn't use concealer under my eyes at all, and now I at least feel comfortable using it for special occasions (still too lazy day to day, but that's a different story). The amount she uses is better for me, and I think I'll have to try applying it with a brush rather than the applicator, but your technique itself is still solid (and immeasurably better than the dreaded triangle).
HOLY GOD THOSE BRUSHES đ±â ïž
Much like my art and English teachers told me while I was in school: You need to learn the rules so you can know how to break them effectively later.
That was drilled into our heads. We needed to know about composition and color theory, etc. in art when we started learning in kindergarten, so by the time we hit middle/high school, we know how to break those basic rules for maximum creative effect. It's exactly the same for makeup.
15:36 as a line cook, I love this đ
Especially the slinking away while keeping eye contact đ
âCookingâŠ. Has no rulesâŠ. đđđâ
The most difficult part of this video was imagining Robert as a chef
đ€Ł
I visualized him as The Pink Panther. Raising brows while whispering đ Chicken đ hasđ no đrules. And giggling and the end of the word dry đ .
Robert reminds me of my brother and it's very comforting to me to watch his videos. My brother has ceased contact with our family because of my mum's behaviour and their relationship breaking down altogether. I got back in touch with him briefly, but he's dropped off the radar again, so yeah. It's just nice being able to watch someone who so closely resembles my brother in appearance and in voice.
"Please excuse my makeup". You said that literally as I was looking at your makeup thinking how good it looks lol
10:28- âNo.â
I love sassy Robert đđ€đ
I completely agree with the lady who made the tick tock about you Robert! You are the only person who has helped me with my makeup! I was walking around with cakey foundation , too much eyeshadow and too much concealer! And once I started listening to you my makeup techniques have gotten so much better, I get so many compliments on my makeup, and it's all thanks to you. Thank you!
Art in general has rules as well. Drawing, painting, music, dance, clay molding, etc. all of it has rules. It's about learning those rules and then applying that knowledge to your craft in order to make it individual and creative.
*VOLUMETRY 101*
Customer: I want a concealer to conceal my eye bags.
Me: You mean to conceal the pigmentation.
Customer: NO. THE BAGS!! To make me look less tired.
Me: If you slather your boobies with concealer, will you become flat?
Customer: Of course not, such a stupid idea!!!
Me: đ€·đ»ââïž
đ§đ»ââïžđ€
EXACTLYYYYY
This even reminds me on how the vendor at Douglas (a well-known shop chain for Make Up and perfume im Germany) told me that using concealer under the eyes is a MUST. Well... the only thing under the eyes that I have are bags, no dark circles or sth. And the only thing I see when using concealer is how it brings out the line around the bag on times when they are bigger (allergies đ) and the lines and wrinkles around the eyes. That's not really sth I like to bring out... đ
Make up is fun.
Art is fun.
Watching Robert Welsh is fun đ€
Imagine if you were doing makeup for a client and you were like âno rules! Just gonna play!!!â đđđ
Hi Robert, I've been following you for years. A random girl came up to me in a drugstore today because she liked my makeup and wanted tips. She was so lost and I shared with her your concealer method and more. Honestly I think I overloaded her with information but as I was walking away I was like, just send her to Robert! Hahaha so I went back and showed her your channelđ
Anyway, just wanted to let you know about the lives you touch, even all the way here in Singapore
I spent years and years doing my eyeliner a certain way, and then I saw a short clip on youtube about doing eyeliner for eyes with a downward-turned outer corner, and literally the first day I tried it my husband commented on it very positively! I really love how this tiny little adjustment has made such a noticeable difference in my appearance đ it really does pay to learn makeup techniques that work WITH your face instead of trying to force your face to fit a makeup technique!
All professions have rulesâŠtotally agree with him.
âNo.. noâŠ đ€Ł no, it doesnât work like thatâ Robert Welsh 2022
Thank goodness for Robert because I was watching all these influencers trying to get a bit better at my own makeup and I have finally been steered in the proper direction. Whew child.
Me too. I just wanted my makeup to look good and feel pretty and it looked horrible. Now, thanks to Robert and James my skin and makeup took a 180.
@@HB-yg3ke SAME! Thank gosh for these beauties because I was on the struggle bus too.
đ I was just thinking âWow, Robertâs eyes are f*****g stunningâ when you apologised for how your makeup looked⊠đđ€đ
The thing with the 'lifting face concealer' trick is that it just exaggerates the lines. Especially lines in the outer cornor of your eyes. Putting concealer directly there just adds to the appearance of wrinkles near the eyes
Your concealer technique is amazing, it's the amount that matters. I don't bother using a brush for that now. Fingers are the best!
Happy Wednesday, Robert! Thank you for the reactions for tricks for those of us over 40đ„°, especially blush placement, and the chef analogy was absolutely perfect (and Reason #185 that I love your content). Have an awesome rest of the week! đđ€đđ€đđ€đđ€
When I saw "dos and don'ts" for over 40 I was expecting nonsense. Usually it's a 20-something telling me what I became too old to do the day I rolled over the hill. That video was actually helpful, and I never would have clicked it if not for Robert. It was more of a "do better" than any "don'ts".
I'll use the contouring trick for sure. I have really pronounced high cheekbones and very little subcutaneous fat so I look too sharp and old when I darken the hollows.
Remember seeing everyone with those huge triangles under their eyes? It was the absolute done thing (I'd never done it in my youth, but I'm over the hill!) I honestly saw that change start from your content Robert, so thank you âșïž
This was brilliant as always! The best takeaway from the better tik toks was learn to use products in the best way possible and then be aware of your own facial structure and how to place makeup on your personal canvas. That first lady with the tips for over 40s was useful for any age with similar features. I'm in my 30s and my top lip is down turned and always has been, no one would notice as I'm always smiling and hardly ever use lip liner, but certainly something to think about if and when I do use lip liner.
Not me saying "that's not what you say!" When you were saying your line incorrectly đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
I really need to just shut up and listen sometimesđ€Łđ€Ł
If Robert's eyeshadow application isn't perfect than I don't know what is. Every makeup look he does is perfectly flawless.
My concealer game changed drastically once I started watching Robert. Gotta say that 4d sigma concealer brush is an absolute godsend.
The collar of your shirt is making me have mood swings đ€Ł
Creativity and individuality is what you do knowing the rules of makeup. Simple to understand.
I remember when you started the ghost stories on Mondays.
Which, btw, I'm so so grateful for because that's how I found Kara C, and I adore her she's so sweet and im so damn proud of her, she's lost so much weight she's about to have the extra skin removal surgery! đ„łđ„łđ„ł
But yeah, I'm pretty sure I found you within a couple months of you starting youtube, I know I've seen all your videosđ€Łđ€Ł I'm totally not a stalker, at all, and don't have a Welsh twins shrine or anything (James if you see this, yes, I still offer it cheese daily) mmmkay time for me to shut up
I'm studying to be an MUA, mostly because I was inspired by you, I've always loved it, and thought it was too late at 35 years old, but I'm not!
I think when the more popular CZcamsrs or influencers do something⊠it is a given for most people. I think all makeup tutorials should include video in real light inside and outside to REALLY see how it looks. With no filter period. Lol
You could do a ghost stories episode featuring that last video on repeat. *shivers*
To me the word "theory" is that if you do x, then you will have y outcome
And "rules" are saying what you can/should or can't/shouldn't do
It kinda comes down to semantics a bit with the misunderstanding. Using the words "rules" and "theory" to refer to the same thing is confusing for people who see the words quite distinctly and requires a form of translation
To me personally:
Makeup THEORY is that orange eyeshadow makes my blue eyes look brighter/more blue, and blue eyeshadow does not make my eyes look brighter. This can be useful information, especially in a more professional context which makeup artists like Robert exist in
Makeup RULES are that bc I have blue eyes, I HAVE to wear orangey/brown eyeshadow and I CANNOT wear blue. This is unnecessarilly limiting and does not allow the individuality and creativity that Robert and his viewers value
Like if I want to honor Chrissy from Stranger Things with blue eyeshadow I'm gonna do it! In that case my eye makeup is not intended to make me look more attractive by current standards of beauty, but to reference a character/a tv show and express myself!
Or to say that contouring a certain way makes your wide face look wider so you "shouldn't" do that, or having your hair cut a certain way makes your square jaw look more square so you "shouldn't" do that...
All unnecessary
Many people will find that information helpful, but for some maybe it's because they WANT to emphasize their wide face or they WANT to emphasize their square jaw
Using neutral language when explaining theories in makeup, fashion, hairstyling, etc would solve most of the broader problem imo
This might be a big ask because it requires a rethink of our vocabularies and how we communicate ideas, but I think it would be a great improvement in terms of viewing makeup and related fields as artistic avenues for self-expression, which is what they are at their best (again imho as a more casual user of makeup)
Even art like music and painting has theory behind it! And those theories are useful to see what you can play around with. Many incredible creative minds broke what we thought of as "rules" while using theory
I think when that commenter said "rules" they were actually on the same page as Robert, they just had different connotations for the words "theory" and "rule"
My art teacher always said you had to learn the rules so that you could choose how and what to break to create your individuality
Fr your channel is the reason I don't need to go on youtube and seek out a makeup tutorial every time I want to go out. I just have a better understanding of what I'm doing and why and now I can do perfectly fine looks on my own every time without needing to bring over my laptop and a tutorial to the mirror đđ
Music, cooking, baking, makeup and so much more, all of them have theories, guides, rules, etc. And those serve as a base for that endless artistic/creative possibilities.
Your cooking chicken comparison killed međ, such a solid point.
Your giggle is the best đâ€ïž
First thing: I'm 35 and from few years I have huge problem of cacke under the eyes so this is life saving.
Second thing: As less and zero waste person I love that I actually can use just tiny amount of the product.
I've always been good at eyeshadow, liner and mascara part but was mediocre at best in all the rest. Skin care was non existant for me, for example.
You're videos really help me and opened my eyes to the importance of routins and techniques. Thank you Robert â€!
Thanks for including my tik tok! I hope I got my point across in a nice+helpful way that wasnât too cringe.đ

I love your eye look!!đ„°
Loving your eye make up!
I have a degree in music and I think the situation is similar! A lot of musicians have no training and that is totally fine. Theyâre perfectly able to make amazing music! But I think itâs so much easier to break the rules once you know what they are! And understanding music theory makes it much easier to make beautiful things and share them with other people. That doesnât mean there canât still be creativity and artistry.
I really appreciate understanding WHY certain techniques work best, and I think thatâs why your channel is my favorite.
Thank you so much for teaching us! My makeup game has really improved thanks to all your help and tips! đ

I really really love your videos and just adore you. thank you for this
Love your videos Robert! You are so talented and expert at makeup! A pleasure to watch your videos. Also love your scary story vids.
Oh my gosh! I love that analogy with the kitchen!!!!
I had a go at applying my concealer the way you demonstrated - oh my gosh! It made SUCH a difference!! Your method has been, BY FAR, the best way to use concealer. I tend to use light coverage concealers, so I wasn't sure of your method would work...boy, was I wrong!!
Thank you for sharing - you're a genius!
