I think the fandom lacks nuance when they just say "Nemo got 5th in the televote, therefore the win is rigged". Yes, and that 5th was 226 points. More than the 2011 televote winner got and just 17 points less than Loreen with Tattoo. In a year with political voting campaigns. And with people attacking the outfit.
The Code was Top 10 in 36 of 37 countries/ROTW. Every televote except for the one country that Nemo signed a letter against.
    Top 9 in 35.
    Top 8 in 34.
    Top 7 in 33.
    Top 6 in 31.
    Top 5 in 27.
    Top 4 in 16.
    Top 3 in 8.
It's not shocking they won overall. Even getting 43 fewer jury points (26 less than Loreen) still would've won this year.

about Nemo's styling: I talked to my family that comes from the conservative Balkans. They thought: Amazing song, but what's up with his costume? So yes you're right, but: I applaud Switzerland for taking a risk and showing courage. They wanted to show Nemo's story, and they did. They didn't care about the conservative East, they cared about Nemo. And that's what counts at the end for me. Deserving winner ❤

Very much appreciate the knowledge you bring from your other job and your take on the accreditation process for media. Fascinating viewpoint that most of us would not even consider.

Can we be serious like Switzerland has been hungry since 2019 for that win and have been serving quality it was about time we gave them their flowers and rewarded them ….
Croatia yes was phenomenal and would have been a worthy winner but like they can use this momentum they have now build on it like Switzerland has done since 2019 …
We thought Finland was gonna do this this year after last year but they didn’t and now perspectives are gonna consider them more of a shock if they send something decent will give them that momentum again.
My country Ireland now knows what it takes to get into the final and that’s to take risks so I hope after bambies results more unique and quirky artist now won’t be afraid to apply. Low-key Rte began shitting themselves when Bambie gain that moment and now Ireland will have expectations going into next year.
Finally I jthink we should just thank Alesia and all Eurovision. CZcamsrs because they were they bright light in this dark Eurovision season

On your first 2 points: YES and YES. It would have been great for Croatia to win, and yes- Switzerland has been consistent and that being rewarded is great.
Finland took the bait this year. Sini Sabotage or Jessy MAtador would have made it. I don't think Paskana would have qualified, hate to say it but idk...
Irealnd has some real momentum now... don't F-it up 😀

re: use of cubes - I really liked how Nemo used them in an unconventional way. It allowed for Nemo to be walking through chains when singing "I broke out of the chains" and also hid the skirt for the first part of performance so there was a bit of a reveal upon the line "you better buckle up".

So, I AM happy for Nemo. From a vocal and song perspective, they served the win from one side. However, giving that Croatia had to recover so much points to win, is mental. I was so surprised that Slovenia and other small countries did not award high points for Croatia and giving them to Switzerland, kinda sunk Croatia. Instead of receiving support, it was kinda ignored. Also, there were only 44 points that could be covered if some juries awarded Croatia one two more points. Croatia had a lot of low points of jury and some countries at all. I know that Croatia did not awarded nothing to Switzerland, but that is another discussion. I also believe that Croatia lost due to lack of support from countries that withdraw previously- Having countries like Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Hungary, Slovakia. If those countries would've participate and vote, I'm 100% sure Croatia would've won.
On another note, I will write the one thing that we need to preach more. WE NEED MORE JURORS!!! 10-20 per country. Like each country should have a balance in terms of age, gender etc. Also, different backgrounds in terms of music. we saw Norway being nearly dead last cause tradition was not rewarded. We need singers, producers, journalists, OGAE members, etc etc. A new formula need to be introduced and also juries should be back in the semifinals as well. And yes, a ROTW jury MUST happen.

Biggest crime for me: Norway coming last.
I mean we have seen it with France 2022 but Norway this year did not seem messy, the staging seemed coherent and she sounded great. And I thought Gåte would be more accessible because it has some rocky elements and it represents Norway's culture in a way and was for once not camp.
However, Norway can be proud to send such an authentic entry and band although coming last in the final.
I mean I did not expect top 10, rather a mid-table result. But come on, dead-last? It was maybe too good for Eurovision or the viewers could not click with Gåte as it maybe seemed too distant and could not connect with them.

What strikes me is that for all the talk about what juries and televoters look for etc, the nationalities and politics (besides the whole Israel story this year) still influence the results GREATLY. Feel like we often act as if that's over for some reason when its not... Seems like poeples only really had an issue with it when the Eastern European block did it...
That being said I think Malta could've done just about anything to elevate that song /staging but there just never was the necessary quality at the chore of this entry. Thats why she felt the need to go overkill on the dancing. And that semi was crazy too

Excellent to involve PR expertise here, great perspective!
I hope people continue to understand how, as bad as any Israeli delegation members would act (fair to point out), they also hold space for how fucked up it is the way Eden herself was treated - death threats, contestant bullying, etc. Just ridiculous stuff few seem to care about but I am happy that you discuss it!
I also hope people can understand that other delegations and commentators did fucked up things and don't stop their concern when it doesn't involve Israeli. There is also a severe toxicity among its fans to blame Israel for everything. People were blaming Israel for Joost's NQ, which is sickening, to see that as their first impulse. The stuff I saw on Twitter in particular, including violent threats toward her, was so upsetting.

About Malta - the problem is the delegation. TVM has budget but it's being completely misused. This year we got a national final in a studio which was criticised to the point that the Minister of Culture had to intervene and confirm that it will go back to the arena next year. It was not budget cuts as some people had assumed, but rather misuse of funds. The artists were not given their creative freedom by sending in their own songs for them to be showcased through live performances on a televised national final in front of an audience. Instead, the money was spent on three elements: 1) a songwriting camp that invited mostly foreign friends of the delegation to work on songs that were sponsored by the broadcaster and were favoured in the final lineup of entries. Multiple artists and credible sources have confirmed this privately, it is not just speculation. 2) 5000€ on music videos for each of the 12 finalists and add ons by the artists themselves went to three creative directors who all work with TVM and partner organisations. Nepotism? You tell me. 3) The winning song got a THIRD revamp by Linnea and Joy Debb who are acclaimed and therefore very expensive songwriters. Even if we are naive enough to assume that this is being done by good intent, the result is last in the semi-final for a second consecutive time. And just for the stats - this is the fourth time since 2017 that Malta came last in the semi final televote. This begs the question - is the delegation competent to be entrusted with using these funds securely and effectively?

First of all - great discussion Alesia. Re press accreditation, IDEALLY the press team should evaluate applicants and reserve the right to revoke accreditation, like you said. HOWEVER. Given the double standards we have seen this year from the EBU, it's unrealistic to believe that the they would make this mechanism work fairly. I don't think it's pessimistic to think that if a mechanism does come into affect - fan media will be the first to get the kick. I come from Malta, where official media provides no content whatsoever. Therefore as a reactor, a content creator but above all - a fan myself, I can only consume content from fan media. Moreover, official media does not dig deep into content creation like us people do. Otherwise, there wouldn't be the need for fan media if official media is enough, right? All I'm asking is for us to be a little bit careful on what ideas we should be putting forward for the EBU because such ideas can be misused and we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot. After all, the foolishness that went on this year came from official media and delegations. I have never seen a more diverse community from ALL countries, ALL genders, ALL sexualities, ALL ages and ALL beliefs as I have seen with fan media and I think we should preserve that.

If I attended lets say a painting competition and lets say the competition doesnt just let the judges decide but the attendees too. Im sure I'd have my favorites right away but never would it occur to me that the jury of professional painters have to agree with me for the result to be legitimate. I'd naturally asume that a lifelong painter has a whole other way of looking at a work of art and sees a few more technical layers of it than I do. And I personally would he interested in that perspective even if I disagree. Never would I go "that dude has no clue, no taste, probably is corrupt etc.
That being said I also want to say that many contestants broke the rules and added fuel into the already raging fire which was unnececerry! From Joost shouting " why not!" at the press conference when Eden was talking to Marina behaving like a child to Bambie investing more time promoting personal political beliefs instead of her country, Silvester doing tweets about singing after Israel giving pick me girl energy, portugal as well etc etc. In my opinion if you accept to participate at esc you should leave your personal political views to the side and just sing, its a song contest! Me as a neutral fan I spent so much money to travel there and I did not care at all about their political views yet I was confronted with it the whole time, which made me lose symphaty for many artists.
All that being said, europe showed by televote on which side they stand and EBU needs def stronger rules for the artists. Also what I learned this year is that fans are very toxic and spead lies and rumours online a lot. Even after Avatros had a statement what happened with Joost people still hate online on Eden saying it was her fault and that she insulted his parents, which is basically as we know now a total lie. I was such a huge esc fan but for me the toxic fans in Malmö and especially online + the artists with the political views destroyed it for me. I dont blame the EBU at all. I mean even the guy who said before the show started that we are here for good times and celebrate music got boooed and I saw today that he is being bullied online as well by fans for trying to make a good atmosphere before the final started, this is just way over the line and people just lost control! So many internet warriors in 2024...

The fact that the Croatian jury gave no points to Switzerland and only three points to Serbia is an interesting contrast that I will always criticize in the back of my mind. A song that is one of the two favorites to win the entire competition, with a clear musical masterpiece of production, vocal perfection and impressive staging, receives 0 points from the Croatian jury, while a beautiful ballad that was very well staged and performed in a Slavic language that Croatians can understand receives only 3 points. My question is: were you politically motivated or not? Because sitting in the middle is probably the worst thing you can do. In my opinion, Serbia deserved more points from the jury OR at least some points awarded to Switzerland. Something is not right here and I just know they did this on purpose. Too bad.

I am absolutely fine with the winner: I would have been fine with Croatia. I think I also agree with the top 10. Although I must say that I personally was a bit shocked with Norway being this low haha and also that Israel received low jury points, was that on purpose?. I expected the juries respecting that song more then it did. For the rest I agreed with the results and nothing too crazy with the results. I thought it was beautiful to see Latvia doing better then expected.
My country the Netherlands has not yet (from what I know) confirmed that we are going next year. I think they are waiting until its done with and maybe then they still might go, but its also possible that they are going to wait 1 year. Lots of people in my country were extremely disappointed and a lot of year people were frustrated so I think it might happen that we wait 1 year haha.
EBU seems to only disqualify those that do something towards EBU people, not to the artists. Even though they claim to say that they want a safe place for everybody, that seems to not be true apperiantly. I do believe that the EBU will change things for the future because I think they realize now that it went wrong this time. Also the fact that Portugal is accusing EBU of placing the video of Portugal later on YOuTUbe on purpose because she had her nails with patterns relating to Palestina. EBU admitted that it was the reason why the video was placed later after the voting was closed. Maybe the rules should be clearer or the communication in general indeed. Because the whole event of Joost could have been prevented if the people communicated and did what was communicated. From what I saw there were other fans that made content in the press room but were kicked out because of an unknown reason, but it wasn't KAN but the fans that were making content for us.

All the EBU had to do was make the correct decision that we all know they should have taken.
They didn’t take this decision so the artists had to live the consequences of their hypocrisy.
Several artists if not the majority of them have had bad experiences this season. The EBU did not protect them by allowing a rogue rule breaking broadcaster compete. For this reason what should have been an all time great Eurovision was tainted. Österdahl has put the contest into disrepute. Sorry but it’s facts. He must apologise and maybe even resign. Changes must be made, real changes.

Alesia there is one thing which is not addressed here: the pressure to get Israel cancelled from the fans and fan press invaded a lot the atmosphere + some artists had the vanity to be political heroes.
Those who chose a low profile like Baby Lasagna, Ladaniva, Marcus & Martinus or Windows95man etc were fair players in my view.
Everyone with accreditation should indeed behave and that includes artists too.
Fans were speculating ahead of the contest that Eden would be DQ before the show, or that she would just rehearse but not sing live, that there would be a stage invader, that she would not qualify in SF2. When none of that happened, things turned really sour and the tension in Malmö escalated into that mess.

I'm lying on this beautiful beach on Aruba and then realizing they may have voted for Joost. And then fall asleep again. Just joking but that was brilliant.
Besides all the rumours, I think it's difficult for "independant" artists to really know the impact of participation. S10 had the same experience in 2022 but never said anything until now. It's a circus. The good, the bad and the ugly. It's so much pressure.
Can we change it (as a fandom) in this kind of production? Looking at the developments last years probably not. Just looking at the rehearsals, reacting to it and share it with other fans. Not possible anymore. This was part of the joy.
And I hate to say it but the Televote was an aniti-vote. In Dutch culture it's quite a common thing. You vote for the artist with the most chance of success. Just to make sure.... But it didn't work in the end.
But Norway? I saw this as a potential winner. And being last? Crazy year and to be continued. Thanks Alesia for everything and see you tomorrow.

The cost of voting should be similar in all countries, at the moment there are massive differences (15p in the UK, €1.00 in Finland, and at least last year it was €1.70 in Estonia). In countries where it is cheap, people can easily vote for 20 times, but when it is expensive, you probably only vote once or twice.

Sad I couldn't make it lfor your two lives :/ Here are my takes :
    The Ones Left Behind :
    1) Albania : I think what you said about Malta fully applies to Albania. Our first impression of their song is lost in the middle of the other 31 samey songs with a bad sound mixing and no staging at all... They need to scrap FiK or reboot it. First, start publishing the the official audios before the shows againt so our first impression isn't altered by the sound mixing with the orchestra. Then, bring back stagings because we now have people withdrawing because they can't have a performance that involves more than them standing there singing... And finally, the songs... Why are we going back in time and losing authenticity ? Where are our Me tana, Karma, Zjarri im, Sekrets... They only got lucky with Albina & her family last year but this is going downhill in my opinion...
    2) Czechia : I don't understand the decision to cut the song in the middle to air a pre-recorded spoken argument on an LED box at all. It just cut the rhythm, the musicality and the flow of the song and it's a shame since the bridge they added in the revamp actually really worked and already filled the role of cooling the energy down before the climax...
    3) Moldova : I feel like the delegation really didn't have any faith in the song and they didn't even try investing in the performance, letting her stand there on her own with her violin on a fake moving field of flowers... It's a shame cause I believe it could have qualified.
    4) San Marino : Really sad for this one, I've read the singer was sick which really tampered with the enrgy, otherwise I do think it had a lot of potential.
    5) Malta : I think the song was always the issue. It wasn't that strong, it wasn't even the strongest in the Maltese selection and it didn't match the other girlbops. The bridge just keeps going forever, there's nothing much happening musically while she's spinning... I would like them to scrap the heats and just do the 12-songs final because that was good, the songs were just not al the right ones. Or internally select Aidan, this would be the best option because he sang the 2 best options they had in the last 3 years...
    6) Australia & Poland : I actually really liked their performances but the vocal quality kinda lacked in some parts for different reasons... (too high / too much movement)
    7) Denmark : the pre-recorded "Ooh-ooh"s didn't work. It broke the energy a bit but she was already struggling a bit while not singing them so...
    8) Belgium : the vocal reallly made sure he was NQing. But they're bringing back Eurosong next year so we know it will be better.
    9) Azerbaijan : They shouldn't have included Ilkin. Fahree was a very competent singer and I think having Ilkin doing random vocals hurt the authenticity and package of the song when Fahree could have done it well on his own.
    10) Iceland : Yeah, we all knew, they just selected the wrong song
    The Mess :
I've really come to believe the EBU does not care about the bubble's negative reaction. A lot of casuals (except for the Dutch) won't even have noticed what happened, or they'll be pissed for a day and still come back next year as if nothing happened. It's such a big organisation, in my opinion they believe they can act however they want, have double standards and stuff (and this year has proven they kinda can...). I hope I'll be proven wrong and the broadcasters will force them to change things but I really don't know...

I made this conclusion by comparing the scores of the semi-final and the final and according to which song was at the top of the charts in which country.

This result is unfortunately not trustworthy, nemo deserved to win but the Israeli result was manipulated. They manipulated the whole competition.
The Netherlands was removed from the competition too soon (innocent until proven guilty)
A lot of artists felt very unhappy and unsafe because of the behaviour of that country
behind the scenes, it was a huge mess, and EBU did nothing to solve it.
The Dutch delegation filed two official complaints before the incident with Joost happened and the same goes for some other countries. It was a huge mess and I don’t think there will be a contest next year.
