How to paint an aluminium bike frame, with Spray paint

  • How to paint an aluminium bike frame? How to build a gravel bike? DIY? This second part is all about painting the aluminium bike frame, in this series of shows where I will renovate my aluminium commuter bike, DIY style, into a gravel bike. I do final preparations, I prime the frame, I mask and paint a really nice color scheme, I paint logos and graphics and I apply a nice gloss clear coat.
    I'm an amateur and I build the bike based on the experiences and knowledge I have gained from doing and watching CZcams videos. If you have any questions, thought or alternativ solutions, get involved in the comment section below.

Mostly because it’s much more diverse in what you can do, the colors available and of course, for the 2k products, you only have to mix up what you will use and don’t have to waste a whole can. Thanks. For 2k products (primer and clear coat I waint at least 24 hours (preferably longer, especially if it’s humid and/or cold. I sand 2k primer and 2k clear coat (not the last coat), I don’t sand 1k base coat. Base coats (1k solvent based) usually cures within 2 hours, but check the can, and you can clear coat on top of it after that. If you want to be sure, wait one day. 👌

    I painted my bike with matte grey color and I want this matte effect , do I need to apply clearcoat?

    • @MYnextDIYbikePROJECT
      @MYnextDIYbikePROJECT  Před rokem +1

      Yes, a matt clear coat. The clear coat is a completely different kind of coat, designed to create a hard durable surface that withstand uv light, weather and scratches. You can choose between 1k and 2k clear coat. 1k is cheaper, but waker, 2k is tougher, but a bit more expensive.

      And one more question, do you know why my spray splatters, spits and creates me a wild surface ?

    • @MYnextDIYbikePROJECT
      @MYnextDIYbikePROJECT  Před rokem +1

      @@Downtimelegion cant be sure, but a few possible reasons: the can and paint is cold. That makes the paint thicker and also the pressure in the can lower. Hence, the paint spit. Put the can in a bucket of hot water for 5-10 minutes before you paint. Another reason may be if the paint cap is used/dirty. A third, is there paint on your “trigger finger”? A common mistake is to “dipp” the trigger finger in from of the nozzle and that causes the paint to spit. So check that out and see if it helps. 👍

    Hey! Thanks for the video, very interesting and instructive. I am planning on spray painting a frame (actually 2 frames...) soon, and I was wondering how many spray cans you used for your frame? Especially for the 2K primer and clear coat: was one can enough for two layers? Or did you even have some paint left after those two layers? Thanks again!

    • @MYnextDIYbikePROJECT
      @MYnextDIYbikePROJECT  Před 2 lety +4

      Thanks! I would definetly recomand two cans of each, both primer and clear. You will not need it all, but as a beginner you will not be as effectiv with the paint as a pro would be. I used two of each. You do two layers and if you end up short it can ruin your work. If you have two frames and do them at the same time you would probably make it with three. The 2K cans are useless after 48 hours so even if you have some left, its no use.I have another video where I paint a carbon frame out, so check that out as well, hopefully som more tips and trix there. Good luck! czcams.com/video/VgObKuVqcDo/video.html

      Lite svårt att säga eftersom att oliks skärmar/displayer har olika färgtoner. Men på min Iphone skulle jag säga att den är väldigt lik verkligen. 👍
      Jag är dock mer och mer skeptisk till Montanas färger. Jag har haft en del problem med att det fastnar limmrester från maskeringstejp och stencilvinylen. Har inte haft samma problem med andra märken. Går själv mer och mer mot bilfärg där du har hela RAL-systemet att välja på. De är lire dyrare men jag upplever en kvalitetsskillnad. Men om du inte ska maska eller så är Montana helt ok. 👍

      Detta är mitt första cykelprojekt (single speed av gammal racer) och inget ska maskas så jag tänkte testa Montana men med samma klarlack som du använder. Vill inte lägga för mycket pengar på första projektet.

      Hi Adam, The color spray is Montana cans gold series. Acrylic solvent based paint. The clear coat is Spraymax 2K gloss clear coat. It has a Internal casing with an activator that you push in tho the bottom of the can. I don’t know if these brands ar available in Indonesia. Good luck and for more inspiration, check out the video below, and please subscribe to the channel. 👍

    • @MYnextDIYbikePROJECT

      A few weeks, not because it was needed but because I didn’t have time to start earlier. But I would let it cure for a week so the clear coat is completely dry. You can start after 24h but the clear can be a bit soft by then and easier to scratch.
