I have worked in the medical field for 40 years. I have seen so many diabetics and hypertensive people "managed" by medications and their health gets worse and worse leading to inevitable outcome. Its rare if a doctor recommends plant based diets - even today. Many thanks to Rip Esselstyn, his father and Dr. Ornish for giving people are real self-help tool! I've been plant based for going on 6 years and vegan for over 10. I don't think I would be here if it wasn't for this diet. Thank you for this interview!

It is truly fantastic that Medicare now covers the Ornish heart care program. Bravo to Dr. Ornish! And to Rip for having him as a breakthrough guest. Here’s my testimony: I am a Survivor: Covid hit me July, 2021.
Just 2 1/2 months prior, I had switched to a Vegan diet, lost 17 pounds, more energy, better
    sleep, ya-dah-ya-dah.
Wednesday July 14th I attended a neighbor’s funeral (not Covid), I came home so fatigued I slept the rest of the day, didn’t feel like eating. I repeated this for 3 more days, woke up on the 4th evening a little hungry, ate a bowl of oatmeal, and bounced right back. Not bad for a diabetic, cancer survivor, quintuple bypass surgery, with HITT complications survivor.!
Yes, I’m an advocate for “Plant Strong” Lifestyle! 🎉🎉🎉

It is a distinct pleasure to hear your story as it and those of many others keep me on the path. We get prayer requests DAILY for people having heart issues, high BP, etc. At this point I almost am annoyed when these folks won't consider food to be the culprit. Last church breakfast featured ham, bacon & sausage, links & patties, biscuits & gravy !!! Also eggs, pancakes & frozen waffles. On my behalf they had a bowl of fruit lol. It's like putting water in your car and wondering why it won't run, or standing on the interstate and then wondering why you keep getting hit by cars.

Rip, can you please pass my thanks to your father for his book on making someone 'Heart Attack Proof'.
In April last year I broke a shoulder, and had a heart attack on a Bank Holiday, so because of the time in the UK I couldn't get a cab, a lift and had to physically walk 9 miles to hospital during a cardiac event. Needless to say I made it, spent 4 days in hospital, but when I had my angiogram, the surgeon who examined my heart couldn't believe how I managed to get to hospital and more astonishingly he remarked in front of all the staff in the theatre that they should look at the monitor of the camera of my heart as they will see the inside of my heart and it maybe the only case they see in their entire medical career.
In short I didn't do any damage to my heart, which the surgeon found amazing so I spent some time with him and explained how I managed the feat and the science involved by pumping more of the correct gases through the system to scrub the arteries clean. The source for the science was of course your fathers book, and I passed on the information to the cardiac team and I'm now a 'lab rat' to see how a cardiac department can get patients to do something to improve themselves as I clearly managed.
I spent 4 days in hospital on a cardiac ward and was the only one not to be sent for surgery to have a stent fitted, though I was scheduled for the surgery until my angiogram! I was discharged from hospital later that day with the staff in complete disbelief!
It's about a good as a testimonial for eating a lot of broccoli as one can get, and it's verifiable and 100% true.
There's now a cardiac team in the UK and one surgeon in particular who was amazed what a patient achieved as a result from dietary changes!

Thanks for interviewing the great Dean Ornish. As far as advertising is concerned, I do believe, like Dean Ornish, that much of the world view of many people is shaped by advertising. In going whole food-plant based, I realized how powerful the food commercials are. They me hungry on the spot. I cut back on programs and media that have advertising and one thing I did to avoid (at least at first) was to take driving routes which don't have my favorite fast food restaurant. I don't watch standard television any longer and I believe that's the biggest change. I also am careful with excessive advertising at times on radio and the internet. I think it helped me quite a bit and not just on food. I'll skip videos of specific topics, including excessive over-consumption, war, violence, vulgarity for example, because it's real easy to get inundated with it if not careful. What we see everyday, and not just advertising, shapes us. Bad friends can shape us and our activities. There are good people as friends who can help keep the right behavior patterns and worldview. As it concerns general mental health, I am very careful about following current events.
I have been food tempted a little bit when visiting family, but driving by restaurants can't get me now, especially when I can readily get some fruit or have some. Edit: spelling

I been recommending Undo It to pretty much everyone i run into for years now :)
Got a hard copy for my father as well. :D
I think the biggest tidbit to make it all work for me was to get the 10-20% fat from whole foods while eating all plantbased. I counted the macronutrients and ate enough sunflower seeds or walnuts to account for the fats and suddenly i felt amazing on this lifestyle. Liquid iodine supplements help too :p
Many people feel very bad on wholefood plant based diet simply because they do not get enough seeds in through the day. Add a few handful of seeds to whatever they were eating and suddenly weakness and mental fogginess goes away :)

I don’t doubt what you are experiencing, I’m on a whole food plant based diet and eat very little seeds, nuts and high fat food and I feel great but everyone is different. If they ever do a study saying your lifestyle works for someone like me than I’m in.

I appreciate all the info, research, and dedication to changing peoples lives. It’s hard to dismiss the research findings. It’s also hard to look at all the pubic figures eating this whole food plant base lifestyle, yet they look older than their age. Dean ornish is 68 in this interview, however to my eye he appears well into his 70s. The same goes for Dr Barnard and all the others.

He mentioned a couple physicians he knows who were quite fit and low risk for coronary disease. Both were doing the carnivore diet and wound up getting coronary bypass surgery. I know, just anecdotal, but is there anything remotely as consistently as beneficial as a Whole Foods plant based diet?

I'd go out on a limb and suspect most, maybe even almost all of them weren't strict. I think there are so many more benefits to eating healthy than we know about now. I don't doubt a significant amount of disease isn't totally related to diet, but we've only touched the surface of what this superpower diet can do.

I am going to tell you the truth. I have been trying to do Whole Food Plant-Based for the past 3 years and I only lost maybe 10 pounds. What sucks is that my Keto friends did lose weight. They have really bad lab results, so I am not jealous of that part. But I really haven't succeeded in losing weight. I guess it is that I am not good at cooking, so I do things like eating Amy's non-dairy bean burritos every day for lunch. With a bag of Brad's Vampire killer kale chips. I don't do good serving sizes. The bag of kale chips is supposed to be 2 servings and I eat the whole thing. Not sure I will ever succeed but I don't have as bad labs as my thin Keto friends. (They both lost 100 pounds on keto while I lost only 10 or so pounds) My friend was at the ER last night and her doctor has said more than once that she has the worst labs he has ever seen and I asked what she eats and it was like bacon and cream.
