If you truly wish to know, a boomerang was never designed to come back. Its shape is designed so that either end can be held as a handle (not always true), while the boomerang body has thin edges and a strong shape.
This means it can be used as a clubbing weapon, similar to a cudgel. The overall shape is designed so that you get the advantage of lever forces when you throw it with a large arm swing, similar to a sling. The shape also works similar to a pick or axe when used as a melee weapon, with all the force of the swing going through the point of the boomerang.
Overall the boomerang is a very deadly melee weapon, especially the original wooden and stone ones that have some heft to them.
The original shape of a boomerang makes the boomerang more accurate without losing too much momentum. The slow spin makes sure that the body of the boomerang digs into and drags through the target.
Thrown boomerangs can easily shatter bone.
The more recognisable modern toy boomerangs are much lighter, have more of a curve, and are often much thinner.
I have seen and used and seen commercially available “throwing” boomerangs and if you do throw them very hard they do one large loop and then a smaller then return close the original throwing position, if you look it up you should find that, but your paragraph about melee boomerangs is correct
But to be fair and cynical to Intern's point, just about every ranged weapon was the result of someone yeeting it from their hands in the first place and finding out that it worked pretty well. I mean it turns out that having someone run in with huge kegs of gunpowder and a lit torch isn't quite as effective as launching said kegs in a composite form with rocket propulsion and aiming computers in it (a missile).

As an Aussie I can say that we don’t use boomerangs anymore the aboriginals did for hunting but that’s long ago
