I belive it depends: in FIKTA (Shotokan), for example, for yellow belt the fist kata is Heian Shodan. We don't teach Taigyoku Nidan, and actually it's really interesting to see other Katas.

I've trained in traditional Shotokan karate since 1970. The original Taikyoku Nidan has No kicks. It's the same as Taikyoku Shodan but the punches are face or Jodan level. Is this just his own version?

This is not Taigyoku Nidan... there is no kick in Taigyoku Nidan. i''ve been doing GKR for years and it has irked me that they added a kata that is made up... Still a great style though.

I have notices that in Taikyuko Katas there area variation between the different schools. The Taikyuko katas of shotokan sometimes are different to Tikyuko Katas of Shito Ryu (some are equals and some are differents). I don´t know what style of Karate is this.
