    Glad to see Packington is doing well. I used to fish it many years ago before it was stocked with F1s. I remember the acrobatic Skimmers that used to be in big Geary's lake. Well done for braving that weather.

    Thanks for this video. Followed your lead by doing the same in similarly cold weather yesterday and had a very good day. Such a simple set up, tangle free and easy to have a longer hooklength. Used my XS slim 10’10” which was bang on for carp to 8lb on 0.12mm hooklength taking my time.

    amazing to actually see that a simple change in hook length makes big difference, difficult to understand why, great video, actually made me want to go out knowing you can catch in winter.

    • @grahamcallaghan5429
      @grahamcallaghan5429 Před 2 lety +1

      The longer the hooklength, the more chance the fish has of taking/mouthing the hookbait and not hooking itself against the weight of the feeder. A shorter hooklength is a more positive way of fishing.

    • @grahamcallaghan5429
      @grahamcallaghan5429 Před 2 lety

      @@mickeastham4154 Sometimes they just wont have the shorter hooklength, if they are very cagey or easily spooked then a longer hooklength away from the main pile of bait and the feeder can work. There are times to be negative and times to be more positive. Thats why he has started on the longer hooklength - expecting the fishing to be difficult and the fish a bit cagey, but when he has seen those indications on the tip meaning there are fish in the peg and potentially missed bites, he's shorted the hooklength and fished it more positively. Its all about sussing the peg out and how the fish are behaving/feeding on the day.

    Fair play Jamie for giving us a great video in awful conditions. I've fished Little Geary's many times but never with a maggot feeder. As I have bought some of the Matrix new in-line maggot feeders it seems a shame not to try them the weekend.

    Man that rain! I work outdoors all year round in every weather but fishing in the rain, nah! I need a brolly for that

  • @brian1204
    @brian1204 Před 2 lety +1

    I’m in the US, no match fishing, but it still surprises me how long a hooklength is commonly used.
    I mostly fish for carp, and rarely use anything longer than 8”, and when using a method feeder only about 3”.
    Also, I like a swivel below the feeder because the hookbait often twists around when retrieved.
    I may try loop to loop to see if it increases bites.

    • @CatchFishingChannel
      @CatchFishingChannel  Před 2 lety

      We mainly use hooklengths here because we usually can only get bites on a diameter of line which is too thin to use as reel line if that makes sense? There are lots of occasions when we do fish direct though especially for bigger fish. Oh yes the swivel really helps avoid spin-ups doesn't it!

    Another great video Jamie.
    Maggot feeder isn't used as much as it should be. Your tactic of priming the line and then increasing the feed rate was a tactic I used on Sunday in our latest club match all be it on the pole (the feeder only produced 3 small roach) to win the match with quality roach and a single F1. Doubling the weight of second place.

  • @peterthornton8520

    Good session Jamie. The power of Maggots always shines through. I love the Matrix side tray with except for the fact that having used the Pramtype Tray for a number of years I find that my bait especially is better protected against the elements. ( I noticed some red maggots crawling about your tray having got wet). I think if Matrix brought out a XL type tray with Pram type hood they would find plenty of takers. It would go well with my PRO36 Box. Informative video though. Cheers
