  • Last speech of Lord General Sturnn to the 412th Cadian Regiment, before the final charge at the battle of Cadia. The planet broke before the Guard did. Let the story of their sacrifice burn across history like a shooting star !
The Imperial Guard, also known as the Astra Militarum, is the primary fighting force of the Imperium, so numerous in size that even the Departmento Munitorum cannot place a figure on the number of Guardsmen under arms at any one time; the lists of new recruits and toll of casualties can run into the millions in a single day. It would be unfeasible trying to put any exact number on the strength of the Guard; however, it is believed that there must be many billions of Imperial Guardsmen, divided into millions of regiments. This absolute numeracy provides the Guard with its main power; their ability to deploy in numbers that, eventually, result in victory. Attacking in seemingly endless influxes across battle-zones, charging forth under the cover of massive barrages and delivering massed lasgun volleys, in the Guard the individual Human soldier may appear a lost thing, almost forgotten. Yet the actions of these anonymous soldiers daily decide the fate of worlds.
The Guard forms the very backbone of the Imperium; without it, Mankind would surely perish. Whilst Guardsmen are hardly the equals of Space Marines, fighting neither with the advantages of genetic enhancement or the most powerful personal weaponry, the Guard possesses the courage and the manpower to face and annihilate the enemies of the Emperor across the galaxy.

I remember reading about how a group of Cadians who got off the planet landed on a moon in a nearby system... and were overrun by chaos forces. They stood and fought until the last man died firing his gun.
As chaos won the battle... The rest of the evacuation fleet from Cadia arrived, and they attacked the moon. Not a single chaos aligned individual got off the world alive and it was declared New Cadia, and they settled in to rebuild and fight back.
Chaos was so focused on Cadia, it allowed other systems around the eye to fortify and become a wall. The weak and the faithless may find no deliverance, but neither term applies to the Imperial Guard.

Who was it that saved The Imperium of Man, The Emperor himself from his traitorous son, Horus from his final blow? Was it the Space marines? No, for they had fallen. Was the Custodies? No, for they had been fighting against Horus’s own allies. Was it The Emperors own son, Sangunius? No, for he was brutally killed by his own brother. It was one man, one guardsman; Ollanius Pius. A simple man from a simple planet faced against The Traitor, who was fueled by Daemonic powers bestowed by the foul chaos gods. He had no psychic powers, no genetically modified strength, no high class weapons or armor, he had no
chance. Yet, despite the odds, he stood against Horus, against the chaos gods, against heresy to protect The Emperor. And if one simple man can stand against these odds, WHAT CHANCE DO THESE HERETICS HAVE AGAINST THE GUARD?

The Imperial Guard do not have the super human soldiers of the Space Marines, the sleek craft of the Eldar, the devastating rail weaponry of the Tau, or the blood lust of the Orks. What they have is the Guardsman, a simple human armed with nothing more than a Lasgun, bayonet, and his faith in the Emperor. A man who will stand shoulder to shoulder with you when you are surrounded, out of ammunition, and the very planet itself is cracking beneath your feet. I legitimately started crying while listening to this. The story of Cadia is a story full of heroes. A story about normal, mortal men and women who managed to overcome their fear even when facing their certain doom. In a universe where gigantic armies of supersoldiers, mountian-sized warmachines and daemonic horrors clash on a daily basis, these simple humans are the pinacle of bravery, sacrificing their lives to save the heroes they looked up to. The planet broke before the guard did. And their legacy will survive even longer, for they have shown the galaxy, what humans can accomplish, just through sheer force of will and determination.

    .
I was there, I was there when Cadia fell…
I remember sitting in a smoldering ruin, what was left of a Chapel to the God Emperor, out in the fields of Cadia. We had held that position for hours, the scream of bolter and Lasgun fire ringing in our ears like the bells on Sanguinala. There I sat, cradling and crying over a corpse I held in my arm, of a fellow guardsman whose chest was blown open by Bolter fire, a man who was my little brother.
All around me, my fellow Guardsman could hear me but none dare break me from my crying. On this day we’d all lost friends, lovers, and family, here on this battlefield, all to the vile forces of Chaos and their followers. We were scared, tired, and on the verge of madness, as we fast terrors unbeknownst to the Imperium at large; Daemons, Heretic Cultist, and some things that go beyond my power of description.
It was our Commissar, a woman who’s name I’ve long forgotten, who broke me from my wailing. She was young, I remember that much, young and with a need to prove herself. She was barely a few weeks promoted from Cadet.
She grabbed me by the scruff of my neck, hauling me to my feet, and looked me dead in the eyes. It was at that moment though, when my eyes met her, that I saw the fear in her. She was terrified, same as me, with her other hand shakily holding a Lapistol, saying, ”The Emperor has no use for sniveling cowards!” before taking aim at my head. I closed my eyes, knowing what fate awaited me and didn’t care. My brother was dead, my home was aflame, and all the forces of hell itself waited for me beyond the wall we were using for cover. Then, just as she started to slowly pull the trigger, a Miracle happened.
His every step echoed, with the mixture of machine and metal hitting stone, as his massive shadow fell over the Commissar and I. His giant, armored hand, went to grab the Commissar's pistol and ripped it from her hand. He then looked at it, through the blood-red eyes of his Wolf-shaped helmet, and tossed it aside, before looking back at us. The man…no, the Angel, was an Adeptus Astartes, one of the Space Wolves, a son of Leman Russ. He then pulled his helmet off and showed us his face, a face that was millennium of years old. He watched as my commissar dropped me, in stunned silence and reverence, and slowly began to back away. Perhaps she thought that the Wolf would kill me, for my cowardness, but instead he reached for the corpse of my brother and, before I could even protest, closed his eyes for me. He then looked at me and asked a single, haunting question, one that rings through my ears every time we go on a mission. He asked me, ”Guardsman, why do you fight?”
I simply looked up with silence, my eyes still blurry from the tears I had shed. I was scared, confused, and at my wits end, but the great Wolf simply spoke again, shouting, "GUARDSMAN!” this time to not only me but my entire regiment, "WHY, DO, YOU, FIGHT!?” so loud one could hear it over the raging battle around us. He then waited for the others to all focus on him before he continued, ”I tell you why, you fight because you most!” He then started to pace the ruin, looking at each and everyone of us trapped in that ruin, speaking as he went, ”You are not Astartes, you are mortal men; You are frail, fragile, weak, facing a galaxy of endless horror and Xeno from the depths of the Warp to the very nightmares of Space, ordered to charge with nothing more than a Lasgun and a bayonet, even though the very men and woman who order you to die would rather kill you themselves,” to which he snapped at our Commissar, forcing her to look downward in shame for letting her fear get the better of her.
He then turned back around and headed toward me, drawing his massive, double-bladed power axe, and spoke,”...And yet, you do charge into the fray, with nothing better than a Bayonet with a Flashlight, and you do so with courage in your hearts.” He then stopped beside me and knelt down, putting his giant hand on my shoulder, ”That, Guardsman, is truly an act braver than any Astartes, Daemon, or chaotic traitor, can boast. That despite all the odds against you, you have held the line these ten-thousand years!”
The Spacewolf then stood up and held his axe high, shouting at us, ”I am going out there, and I’m going to make those bastards pay for every inch of proud Cadia they soil, WHO'S WITH ME!?” to which the roaring cries of courage, triumph, and duty echoed through the chapel. Our shouts and cries were so loud that, for an instant, the enemy forces stopped their firing and stared at us, only to find the sight that will forever be in my mind when I think back on blessed Cadia.
We stood up, attached our bayonets, and we charged straight toward the enemy line; we did so with courage in our heart, with pride in our bones, and the blessing of the Emperor in our souls. We charged right into the killing zone. We did this, not with fear of our Commissar's Lasgun behind us, but with the Courage and honor of the Imperial Guard, and we did so with a smile.
And that, my friend, was the day Cadia stands!

I really started crying. I kid you not, many of the Imperium's heroes have taught me so much in life. The strength of humanity does not come from some external miraculous source. We are not invincible superhumans. Our strength comes from the fact we never give up, not even when facing overwhelming enemies. How else could the Imperium still stand after 10.000 years of being surrounded by biologically, technologically and psionically superiour races? It is thanks to their unity and bravery. I had to deal with some serious problems with my family some time ago, and this really helped me to keep going. We have already achieved so much today, I look around me and see the amazing achievements of my species, and I am in awe. No generation has ever had such good lives as we do today, and we can thank mankind alone for that. I am so thankful to be one of us.

You said exactly what I was thinking. We all have to deal with our problems sooner or later, and it falls on us, and us alone, to face them. No matter what happens, we all have the courage it takes to endure everything life throws at us. We may need to wait, we may need to suffer, we may even have to lose something or someone, but it's there. Our race has endured all kinds of suffering and yet, here were are. This video helped me with the fear, pain and uncertainty of recent times. To whoever reads this, have a great day! And remember, no suffering can keep you down forever, you can be unstoppable if your will is strong enough. Cadia Is the perfect example of everything that makes us human. Bravery, endurance, resilience, honour, courage, duty, hope. Those Guardsmen fought -and still fight- like only the human race can.
No defeat, no fear, no hesitation! The planet, and even the galaxy, broke before the Guard did!

I love the story of Cadia because of how pretty much every single guardsman there was a war hero and were extremely loyal to the Imperium before they all died fighting the enemy to the death with little regard to whether or not they were going to survive. They knew their duty was to hold back the forces of Chaos from entering into the Imperium of Man and never faltered with carrying out this duty. This is the type of story telling that I love in science fiction and fantasy when the soldiers actually feel like Human beings loyal to their cause and not just background NPCs meant to die anyways for plot progression...

My first thought was “like an astartes Chaplin” and after that, whenever I faced a difficult time, be it missing family events, being away from my wife, or being deployed, I would read 40k books, listen to stringstorm, and I would pull a wierd form of strength from it. I’d pray at night, listen to stringstorm or read 40k novels during the day, and I’d get through another day. Idk if it’s wrong or wierd, but 40k got me through my deployment, it keeps me moving some days. I love this community, I love this hobby. Every army, real and fiction can learn something from the story of Cadia. They can learn determination. Of never surrendering. Of holding the line no matter what. Of never giving in. Of fighting on even if the odds are screwed. Cadia was a story of heroes. Many heroes fell that day but more live to carry on the fight. The lesson to be learned is simply this: Soldiers have one task- hold the line. And they should do this no matter the odds or enemy

Know no fear for only in death will duty end for death is a luxury the enemy should hope to see not the guard and if the enemy is not afraid of death then death was not brought by no guardsman.

Funny thing there’s a story where a chaos marine was making fun of a guardsman for the fall of CADIA and it got the guardsman so mad he started to beat and actually have a winning fight with the chaos marine but sadly died when the marine had the advantage and chainsworded him

      because one is of superhumans
and the other is of the normal man and woman, fighting for eachother, for family for country for honour for their lives.
They are the weaklings fighting enemies much stronger than them, but yet they hold firm.
theres no other faction that can make "It is what we do best, we die standing" sound more epic than them

We of humanity must remember that though our bodies can be fragile and weak against the horrors of this our darkest hours, it is our spirit and determination that makes us the mighty Bastion against the enemies of humanity. Though we can be cruel it is our compassion that keeps the burning light of human civilization going. And even though I live in the far past of this amazing universe, I feel proud to be human for one day, in a next life far from now I will join the ranks of the guard, I will not surrender my home to any invader and I will eventually die fighting for what I believe in.
Remember those that fight for our imperium, the Emperor is smiling down on us as we are carried to him.
And also remember that when the mighty planet of Cadia was breaking apart killing billions, guardsmen were still fighting on the shattered husk of the planet, THE PLANET BROKE BEFORE THE GUARD DID!!
We of the Imperium must never falter, never surrender, never quit.
    They didn't nor will I
    The Emperor Protects

Even as the ground shook, as the sky burned and planet crumbled the guard faught. Even as the numberless hoards of the heritics and traitorous forces, marched on them the guard faught. Not for their commissars not for the departo militarum, not for even themselves no they faught for all of mankind. For their sons and daughters, fathers and mothers brothers and sisters. They faught to the end so we the imperium of man, who would watch as cadia fell would know. The guard held the line, and will always HOLD THE LINE.
