  • I remember asking the No Doubt crew if it was ok for me to film the show. I got the green light and set up my tripod and camera upfront. Then I was approached by some douchebag that was with the University of Houston. He told me I couldn't film the show. So, ended up trying to bootleg the show above a hill. Unfortunately, I got busted. But, hey. I captured Gwen Stefani on actual film! haha

But I bought their CD and then went to see them at Fitzgerald's that night; I introduced myself to Gwen and Tony the bass player (as they were hawking swag). Never thought I'd see this on CZcams. This is pre-internet, pre-cell phones with cameras. 18-year old me was loving this, the band with the crazy dancing cheerleader. I saw Gin Blossoms here on another date. I’ll be looking for that video now. Saw a band called Green Apple Quick Steps from Seattle, just knew they were the next Nirvana. Really cool!

@@scott8xxx532 I was the only one I personally knew that was online in the mid-80's. I was 10 years old, so I didn't know that many people. Very few people had cell phones and really didn't carry them since they were primarily bag phones used in vehicles. Of course they were just phones, no cameras, no texting. But a lot of people carried still film cameras and some had camcorders that recorded on VHS tapes, which is how this was probably recorded. Even I had a video camera. Video and audio files, even still images were too large for the bandwidth at the time. I connected at 300 baud (0.3kb/sec), which was a speed that started around 1962. At that speed it took over 5 hours to send a mere 5mb of data. But, devices capable of sending text messages over teletype printers came about in the 1880's. Im sure they were cost prohibitive to end consumers.

My friend did an interview with Gwen, and we got to hang out, just four of us at a table for 20 minutes. The show was seriously maybe 60 people, and 20 of us to see ND! Amazing what they accomplished. The band snuck us in to another show the following year at First Ave"Prince famous club" as we were still under age. Good times!

As far as not allowing the filming, that was part of the performance agreement. The University paid for them to play, but not for them to be filmed. That costs extra. We booked so many awesome bands at UH then, between the individual concerts at the UC and the satellite, and the Perpetual Park Parties that were 12 hour fests in Lynn Eusan Park. Good times.

Your comment made me remember something that happened to me. Back in the mid to late 80's I was supposed to go to California to visit a friend. This friend bought 2 tickets to a concert with a band who was just starting to get real attention. That band was The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I wasn't able to make the trip. Shortly after I was talking to him on the phone and I asked how the concert was. He said the Chili Peppers were great, as expected. Then he told me the 2 opening bands, that nobody had ever heard of, were also great and he said both of them were going places. Those 2 opening bands were Pearl Jam and Nirvana.
In 1978 I was in Dallas for the 1st Texxas Jam. This was the 1st of what was supposed to be a huge annual event. Ted Nugent, Heart, Aerosmith, Journey and Head East were the "big names" that I went to see. But I'll never forget one of the opening bands. "Texas, give a big welcome. From Los Angeles, California. Van Halen!!!!!" I had never heard of them before that.

Gwen Stefani didn't audition for No Doubt, she was one of the founding members. Her older brother Eric started No Doubt but left just as they started to get attention. He had other things he wanted to pursue. So, Gwen Stefani is the only person who's been with the band since the very start. Get this, in the beginning she was the backup vocalist. They had a male lead vocalist who committed suicide. They almost broke up but decided to move on. They found a new lead vocalist, another male, but he left. That's when Gwen took over the vocals.

Saw them early 90s in Reseda, CA @ “The Country Club” with SKAnking Pickle, Let’s Go Bowling and others. Gwen stage dove and caused melee of guys punching other guys that tried to grope her as she was being carried around.

My friend got this album from a DJ at KLOL that was like … we don’t know what to do with this music, maybe you kids will like it… we did, it was so different than everything else at the time. 4 years later every band at my high school had ska vibes

The donkey show was a really good ska band with a good female singer around at the same time as them also from SoCal They were real and so good, classy they were. They never became famous only one album. So cool.
