- If I could single out one single project that I think will help folks to gain skills, knowledge and increase their overall self reliance.... It would be chickens! In this video I'll go over the most common components to keeping chickens and why I think they are "the Gateway Drug to self-reliant living". Everything from building the coop and caring for the chickens to setting up food/water systems and everything in between.
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions you might have!

I remember the time when you was doing a video on the chicken coop and there was a rattlesnake crawling in the background and you stopped the video to catch it and then continued with the video😊 Thanks for sharing !!! God Bless!!!
Haha….yes! I actually thought of putting that clip in this video but it was getting rather long to put it in. But now I kinda wish I had🤪
This video deserves 10 Million views & likes!
Thank you !!! 🙏
Excellent video.
Thank you very much!
On your way to getting more people “hooked”. Crazy how much sense it makes 😊
Chickens are the ‘gateway drug’ and I guess I’m being the dealer🤪😂
@@homesteadonomics 😂 I knew you had it in you, lol
Well done 😊
Thank you!😊🙏
Thanks Joe, as always your videos are informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much Carl!😊🙏
Invaluable video. Thank you & God bless!!
Thank you LMB…. May God Bless you too!
Thank you so much for making this video! I learned so much that i hadn't thought about before.
I’m glad to hear you liked it Trina! 😊🙏
I especially enjoy your reporting on the monsoon season
It’s just beginning and last night we had close to 1.5”… yay!😊🙏
Couldn't agree with you more about chickens, Joe. You inspired me to make my own coop, haven't got the water system going yet, but getting there. As well as teaching us self-reliance, they're also great stress relievers.
That is so great to hear Mandy! I’m glad you’re enjoying them and the benefits they bring. I just enjoy seeing them strutting around and doing their thing.😊👍
I got chickens a year ago. They're so much fun... and it's so cool to hatch them and take care of them when they're babies. I suggest everyone have some, if you have a little space. They're so low maintenance and also entertaining and fun.
I totally agree! Enjoyable to have around and probably one of the easiest animals to keep for sure😊🙏
This has to be the best title for a CZcams video...... If you know homesteading
Thank you…. I’ve said it for years and it really makes a lot of sense in my mind atleast 😊👍
@@homesteadonomics God bless you and your family
Joe, another great video. So much information conveyed in an articulate, entertaining manner. You are a superb teacher.
Thank you very much Robert. I very much appreciate appreciate it😊🙏
We just picked up 6 more chicks this spring! I had to make a portable chicken tractor for them since they couldn't go with the rest of the flock easily. We have 9 now and have absolutely loved having backyard chickens! Definitely a gateway drug LOL
Ah that’s great to hear! Loved the idea of portable chicken tractors ever since I saw a Joel Salatin video. Glad to hear you’re hooked too😀👍🙏
What a terrific, well designed and executed presentation. 30+ years ago we established our household in a sub- suburban community with bridal paths instead of sidewalks, minimum 1.5 acre lots, trees and a few old farms and orchards. We planted an orchard on 30’ centers for nuts, apples, pears, peaches, berries and grapes. The existing chickens, goats and horses were grandfathered in as local laws forbid new animals. Cul-de-sac neighborhoods with sidewalks have appeared and we were forced to abandon our wells and septic systems to connect to city water and sewer systems. Us old-timers still compost twigs, clippings and leaves while we are now being assessed a monthly fee for these things to be collected as trash! It’s time to move again.
Wishing you and your family a blessed holiday week celebrating independence. Peace brother
Oh wow! It sounds like you all have a wonderful community there….but sorry to hear about the ‘progress’ with new neighborhoods coming in 😕
Wishing you a blessed independence holiday as well😊🙏
@@homesteadonomics To teach my kids and friends basic survival skills we used to host a cookout every year on Ground Hog day. Here in NE Ohio February usually features snow. I would build a one match or flint & steel fire and cook an entire meal outdoors. It was a snow or shine event. Using a cast iron kettle we would cook “ground hog” stew... a vegetable stew that a ground hog might enjoy. In the late 90’s when the NE USA was without power, cooking became a 5-day picnic. Our family and close neighbors enjoyed happy meals together.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, experience and creative expertise. Growing up, mom and dad provided several opportunities for my siblings and me to learn what you are referring to. We grew chickens for meat, eggs and fertilizer for the orchard and garden. We also raised hogs and cows all on less than 5 acres each year while growing up. Appreciate your reminders down memory lane. Hope that many families and individuals come to learn how to expand their livelihoods and how to manage getting through life. Thanks again. Blessings to you and family in Jesus's Name. ❤☝🙏🙌💪👊
Thank you Jerry! And glad to hear it brought back some memories too. We too have been considering raising some steers on our property. But I gotta fence two sides that aren’t currently fenced as we’d like them to be about to graze this whole thing.
May God bless you and your family as well. In Jesus name indeed😊🙏
Great video Sir. Nice description of the hows and whys of chickens and life.
Thank you very much Tom😊🙏
Great video - the chickens are the stars!!! Very informative and useful! :)
Thank you MMx3😊🙏
Keep the ladies happy, they will keep you fed.
Yes indeed!😊👍
If I can ever convince my wife to make some space in the freezers, looking at doing some meat chickens or meat rabbits.
We get our eggs from our Amish neighbors at around a dollar a dozen so doesn't make much financial sense to get egg layers but it is nice for self-sufficiency.
Always enjoy your videos! Thanks so much! 😊
Me too! I’ve wanted to do meat rabbits for a while but the wire isn’t so keen on it yet…. With the current spread of animals we got…haha
And to be honest if I was getting them from an Amish neighbor for that price I’d definitely go your route for sure! Gonna be better eggs than pretty much anywhere else😊👍
Have you considered collecting mesquite pods and grinding up to make chicken feed? Or flour for your own use? Tastes great added to pancake mix. Mesquite pods are a pretty much limitless supply of food in the Tucson area. Palo Verde and Ironwood seeds are also edible.
I appreciate how you thought out the microclimate for the chicken house. This is often neglected in both animal and human shelters.
I have but just have not set aside the time to do it. We have used it before…. I got some from a friend as well as some from the native seed search store in Tucson. We used it 50/50 and I liked it. But I really do need to get into making my own flour as you mentioned it’s pretty abundant down here😊👍
I am a city dweller, so most of what you do doesn't pertain to my life, but I do enjoy learning and the way you share information.
Hey howdy y'all. What up peeps? Shout out to my best buddy Martin.🎉 In memory of Bawk Bawk RIP (unsolved case of the missing chicken- she was Martin's buddy)
I really love your videos Joe Thanks for the tips and wishing you and the family a blessed day!❤
Thank you and sorry to hear about Martin🙏😔
But I am glad you liked the video 😊🙏
@homesteadonomics oh my Joe, Martin is ok😅. Bawk Bawk is the one that went missing. But she was Martin's buddy for quite some time. He's got a chicken coop too. Idk how he did it (I'll ask)but he added water spray misters for the chickens and dogs. Not a bad idea for those hot southern AZ summers. Stay cool and hydrated! 😉
@@ishtarlopez6203 doh! I misread it🤦♂️🤪
That Black Chicken in the back ground during the jet fly over was listening to every word coming out of your mouth Joe. It was a big fan.... 😆
Great video, interestingly, I watched it the morning after I have decided to tackle finishing up a home interior paint/reno job that I had hired someone to do for me, 3/4 of the way done and they have disappeared…so now I i’m going to finish it. I have never painted before, but I am tackling it and painted my closet first to get my feet wet so to speak. today I am painting my bathroom and tomorrow I am painting my bedroom in addition to removing baseboards, etc., I am a 64-year-old widow, and I have been wanting to learn to do a lot of things around my house and little 1/2 acre homestead…this video was helpful. I do have chickens but I had bought a premade coop from Tractor Supply. It’s working well for now, but in the long run, I will have to buildsomething. I also need to set up a rainwater collection system. My house does not have gutters so I guess after I get the inside finished, I will learn how to put gutters up, I am very tired of hiring people that don’t want to do the work correctly or finish through…!
Thank you for this video, I learn and enjoy so much from your videos over the years!
Oh boy….youve got a FULL plate with all that. sorry to hear about your contractors flaking out on that project. That’s a lot to think about….but as you said, you’ll be able to ensure everything is done the way you want it.
And it’s funny you mentioned the premade tractor supply coop because a coworker of mine was asking if he should buy a used one that he saw on FB marketplace versus building one. And I recommended to him that it’s not a bad option and that it’ll get him started quicker. Plus it’ll give him a while to see what he likes about it and if he ends up wanting to build on in the future he can take the designs he likes about that one and incorporate that into any future ones. So i think you’re off to a great start!
I wish you the best of luck on the rest of your job😊👍
@@homesteadonomics Thank you so much! I just got the first coat of paint on the bathroom! Closet is finished except for the trim. I will prep the bedroom in the morning and go back to finish the closet and then 2nd coat in bathroom. Then back to start on the bedroom. 😜
I do like my TS chicken coop but it truly only fits 3-4 full sized hens. But it works for now. Thank you for the encouragement! Happy Sunday!
Good information brother.. We are headed to some crazy stuff we all need to make a stand .... Keep it up brother
Thank you Dan! I very much agree and glad to hear I’m not the only one seeing it😊👍
We always look forward to your videos. You are a great example for us to follow. Thank you!
I started with chickens. For about 20 years. Then a friend gifted me with a dozen quail eggs. Now I’m a complete quail addict! They hatch in 2 weeks, 2 days and they start laying eggs at just 6 WEEKS old! And they are prolific layers. Plus their eggs are usually safe for people with egg allergies. And they are so easy to dispatch and process for meat. Everyone who eats eggs should try the quiet and gentle Coturnix quail! They are the new city / suburbs chicken.
Awesome stuff Joe, thanks for the info! 😃👍🏼👊🏼
Thanks for checking it out Fred! 😊🙏
Really do enjoy all of your videos.
Thank you and glad to hear it Jmert😊🙏
Beautiful chickens you have there .
I think this style of video worked really well- informative and educational. Nice work.

I buy prickly pears at my supermarket for about $1.50 - $3.00 each Fruit (One).
Oh wow! You’ll have to make a trip southwest to get them while they’re ripe and ready. Usually in toward the end of monsoon season in August to early September
If times get tough or even if they don't? Woah. You're channeling Jack Spirko!
Yes indeed! I love Jacks podcast! And I was even on one many years ago…. 1600’s I think. Talked about a lot of the projects that I’ve done since that interview. Like the travel trailer project and the shipping container shop, etc,. 😊👍
Mr. Joe, thank you for the prestation and details on this video including the futures of gold & silver. My husband has been dealing with both for almost 50 years. Love your homestead and water conservation. I like all the builds you did for the animals and your home/work area-shed and etc. How is the garden coming along also how is the horse and goats doing? Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. 🥰🐕🦺🐴🐤🐔🐐👍👍👍👍👍(🌹🐞🦂🌵)
Wow!!! Really appreciated this video and the message, thanks 👍
How do you get away with cleaning your chicken coop twice a year?😊
If u can't tell this man's dirt is clean .. not heard to see he's meticulous! He's so neat and tidy
Well, I certainly could do it more often but that’s usually about as much as I end up doing it. But also, we do let them out most days so it doesn’t get as much poop in it as, say a coop where the chickens don’t leave too often. Sometimes it’s more but generally every 4 months or so
@@homesteadonomicsyou are doing it right.
Great hat! Along with the Great video. Thank you.
I really enjoyed your video, great information, thank you Sir 😁👍
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thank you Dave😊🙏
We have a couple extremely obnoxious and aggressive roosters. Ever since they've gotten big we have lost no chickens to predators. I'm afraid to turn my back on one particular rooster. And all our chickens are free range all day long every day of the year. ........rural PA homestead.
Yes they can be unruly at times but definitely help to keep the girls safe too! 😊👍
Grandma had a pet goose that was the defender of chickens, and he HATED Grandpa... Grandpa was bent over working on the tractor one summer when the goose snuck up behind him and bit him on the family jewels... I have never seen Grandpa move that fast before. He chased that goose down and we had goose for supper LOL
Love our chickens, they love our scraps. :)
Love your videos.
Enjoyed the video
I enjoyed this presentation, as well as the many others I have watched! At 7:13 or so, I have a question as to the source of the metal hanging feeder (as you are so handy, you may have made it). If you made it, that's great, but if you purchased it, from what source did you purchase it? Thanks! Chickens are great therapy! ha
Thank you very much Jimmy! As for the feeder, it was made by me. I think I have an older video titled something like “DIY chicken feeder with HVAC pipe” or something like that 😊👍
Harbor Freight occasionally has these little solar lights looks like a wedge for only like five bucks.
I find them rather effective for perimeter highlighting.
I thought you would put one of those automatic windows like you had on the greenhouse
Best title ever!

What is the filter that you use on the inlet of the 50 gallon drum?
That's very careful.
They made the door small so that it was like a cat's entrance, and fixed it by placing a stone on the extension of the wire mesh.
Making good use of rainwater and corrugated sheets
In my country, if you raise chickens in the mountains, a wild black kite will watch over them from above, targeting them.
Do small animals or snakes push up the roof cover over the egg removal opening?
While wriggling
The only exposed rooster is the weathervane statue.😏

Thank you!
First again!!!!
Amazing consistency! 😂
Nope, I'm first!
Not having to deal with -50 Celsius would make the self reliant lifestyle so much more fun.
Get quail much better than chickens
I’ve also heard really great things about quail😊👍
Se nota que la construcción es muy yankee 😂
Well, I gotta make it appealing to all the ‘Yankees’ that watch I guess 🤪😂👍
Dude, don't preach to your audience. Your audience will have a widely varied level of skills and experience. Don't assume that you know these abilities for every person that watches your video. Your chicken coop is impressive, but it's a chicken coop. It's not a rocket ship that can go to Mars. I get what you are trying to communicate, but you come across as very presumptuous with some of your statements about "what people can learn."
Well… my genuine apologies if it came across that way. That certainly was not my intent.
Just wanted to share my thoughts on how I think getting chickens is a great venture for folks to get into and the benefits are far more than just the eggs😊
And sticking to the theme, I just gave my thoughts in regard to how “I” view each aspect of keeping chickens “can” get a person thinking about self reliance in a broader context.
I’m very aware there is a wide array of folks that watch these videos and I’m not sure how I could assume that I know what each viewers skills/experience level could possibly be. That’s why I tried to cover it in a general sense.
But you’re welcome to assume whatever of me that you wish.
Thanks for checking out the video 😊👍
I find Joe to be one of those down to earth and genuine creators on CZcams. His projects are usually interesting and he is a fantastic resource for those that want to be more self-reliant.
I'm not sure what you heard in this video but all I heard was someone that's appropriately confident in their abilities.
He explains things in a way that will let a beginner to woodworking be brave enough to tackle a project like this. He is NOT preaching. If you know zero about wood working I bet it is appreciated. And I have learned a few tricks that make projects easier! And I have been building stuff with wood for 54 years! NEVER stop learning! It keeps the brain active.
@@MaryBrownForFreedom Not everyone is a beginner, and that is the problem. He seems to assume everyone who listens to his channel is a beginner. I don't mind learning new things either, and I worked my way through college as a journeyman carpenter. But his constant droning on being self-reliant gets old quick. That's a shame because this project was interesting.
@@sociopathmercenary He appears to assume that everyone that is listening to him is not self-reliant and is a raw beginner. That's what I heard. I liked this project and I agree it is interesting. But not everything needs to be dumbed down.
