- Why did Princess Diana detest Sophie, the wife of Prince Edward, Queen Elizabeth's youngest son? The women were indeed similar in appearance and occasionally dressed in a similar style. I know that Sophie was not allowed to attend Diana's funeral because she truly did not like her. At the time of her death, Diana wasn't speaking to most of her friends, her siblings or her mother. Diana was apparently very easy to anger.

That was a really good point about the wedding. Sophie wouldn't have had the money to copy Diana's clothes or even afford to use the same designer before her marriage. In fact Diana would hardly know Sophie, didn't she die a couple of years before Sophie's wedding.

Her change of style was not one of just getting a new cut and duds or even a new ‘tude., it was the turning point wherein she stepped out as an independent woman. That change allowed her to get more involved in her charities, more involved with other organizations, enlarged her international circle and got her thinking of possibly a life OUTSIDE “the firm” as she called it. This new change of style actually changed her life. So for another to merely copy her style cheapened what it meant for Diana. She did it to save herself in some sense. Others were doing it to get attention and not developing their OWN sense of style. That’s what annoyed Diana.

In fact over the years she grew very close to the Queen and had tea with her often. Prince Philip himself had a close relationship with Lady Louise. Sophie has only come to the forefront since the Queen's passing. She has stepped up to the plate admirably and is carrying out her duties with warmth and elegance. Previous to this she and Edward carried out their duties with little or no recognition and were always in the background.

They are hard to compare because their background and postiion in their respective marriages are widely different. Sophie married the queen's youngest child as a 34-year-old successful career woman. She had grown up in a functional family, had had decent if not very standard education, had had previous relationships, most generally speaking had had a life. Her position in her marriage was strong, her husband was her exact peer in years and head over heels in love with her. Diana married the 36-year-old heir to the throne as a 19-year-old girl who managed to scrape one O-level, was kind, with vivid imagination, but emotionally a child. She was dominated by Charles and chose to rebel, especially because she felt unloved.

Maybe some of you weren't around but Edward loved Diana and at the time it was said that he was looking for a Diana type. They married late, after Diana died, but yes, they did look alike but Diana was always trendier and better built. Her legs were famous from even before she married Charles. Diana's hair was growing out to that style way before Sophie came along. She first wore her hair tucked behind her ears when she met up with Mother T in NYC. For those who don't know - the style first became popular with Meg Ryan and Drew Barrymore. It was also an evolution from the boy's cut of Chyna Phillips (Wilson Phillips) and Josie Bissett (Melrose Place). Growing out very short styles turned into this version.
