  • A comparison of three hunting puffy jackets from KUIU (Super Down Ultra, Kenai Ultra, Super Down Pro) and Jerrod's take on when you should use each one. We also quickly test noise levels and look at how the jackets repel light rain and snow.
    Although these three hooded jackets are brand new, Jerrod has been using KUIU insulation layers for years, and has spent many days and nights in them.

    I own all three. Great video. 100% agree on your assessment. Ultra down saved me last year from a freezing night out. We shot an elk right at the end of evening legal light. 11,000 feet above sea level in 2 feet of snow. Ended up staying out all night without a tent. Busted out my down gear, pants included and stayed pretty warm. Plus I was able to share some other layers with my hunting buddy that was woefully unprepared to stay out all night.

    Thank you fellas. Really want an insulating outer layer that I can pack into the whitetail woods, but I do some up close and personal bow-hunting. I want the warmth of a puffy, but the noise scares me. I appreciate the comparison!

      @@huntinfool_official I was just going to say. "man, I kinda need all 3" as you said that LOL. Ok so...#`1. can you wear the Kenai over the Guide jacket? #2. YOu DO use the Pro in the tree stand and it's not too loud? # just a comment....man that Valo looks REALLY good in the snow. Far better than I would have thought. I was thinking about Verde for W SW Elk or East deer/turkey..but I might be able to get away with Valo for everything which is what I'd LOVE to be able to pull off.

      Gotta mitigate that noise somehow. Come on, for that price tag…spray it with a fleece lining of sorts.

    Great stuff. I bought the Kenai vest and love it as an active piece hiking. Now I am looking for a jacket to wear over the top when resting and camp. Honestly leaning towards the Stone Glacier Cirque since I am in the PNW and rain is a specific concern.

    Not sure if I missed it but I’m curious what the durability difference is between the super down and the kenai. Looking for a jacket that won’t get ripped to shreds immediately and would work good as a midlayer under a kutana gale force in cold weather

    • @huntinfool_official
      @huntinfool_official  Před rokem +1

      The Superdown Ultra is very fragile. The Kenai is a great mid-layer because it breathes but the new fabric they have been using seems to pill very quickly, and the Superdown Pro is more durable, but still not a piece you should walk through brush in.

  • @alexutley3207
    @alexutley3207 Před 2 lety

    How does the sizing fit? Kuiu says buy the same size as everything else you have, all the reviews say buy a size up...

    • @uke4382
      @uke4382 Před 2 lety

      Buy a size up if you wanna put other layers underneath it

  • @robertnevarez7599
    @robertnevarez7599 Před rokem

    I’d be curious to see in a survival situation how the super down ultra would perform. Let’s say an extreme down pour occurred or river dunk, and you were able to put on the coat on and seek shelter in a sleeping bag; would the coat help dry your body?

    • @huntinfool_official
      @huntinfool_official  Před rokem

      The Superdown Ultra (just like any down coat) is going to be far less effective when fully wet. Over time, the down treatment will wear off as well, so be cautious when using it as a survival piece if heavy rain or submersion is a concern.

  • @jaredzeno
    @jaredzeno Před 2 lety

    How would the super down ultra performa as a mid layer for treestand bow hunting?

    • @huntinfool_official
      @huntinfool_official  Před 2 lety

      Any time you run a down jacket as a mid layer you need to be careful that your outer layer is not too heavy. The ultra is going to compress easier than the Pro or Kenai which defeats the purpose of a down coat. I'd suggest going with the Kenai if it's for a mid layer.

    Great product but their sizing absolutely sucks for base and mid layers, Jackets seem to work.

    • @kee7678
      @kee7678 Před 3 lety +1

      Synthetics run smaller.... natural/Merino runs on size.

  • @chiefexecutivemanager8152

    just a reminder to everyone watching. The Kenai jacket outer fabric is uncoated to make it more breathable, however, the synthetic insulation inside is treated to be water resistant. When down gets wet it will lose all of its heat holding properties compared to the treated synthetic in the Kenai. If the Kenai synthetic insulation gets soaked, it will keep you warmer than soaked down.
