Interesting and very well produced. I had thought HT was a syncretic figure who combines Thoth with Hermes rather than an actual human priest.
Yes, most probably. What is fascinating however with these mythical figures is the way they are interpreted each time. It says a lot about the existential situation of a historical period.
If we believe what Iamblichos says in his De Mysteriis Aegyptiorum then HT was a sort of "patron God" of the Egyptian priests who wrote their treatises in his name. So in a way, he is both a God and the archetypal priest.
So Hermes was a priest/scribe that carried the baton of wisdom from the truly ancient emerald tablets created by Thoth? The tablets were made of some type of indestructible substance with raised letters so people could lay a papyrus over it and etch a copy with coal. I have also read and tend to believe that the Trismegistus referred to more than his greatness but his three incarnations of his conscious soul.

@@mikhael.j7 It is my understanding that he was first born in to the physical world in Atlantis and was a prodigy and lived a very long time becoming a high priest. He was incarnated once again in Atlantis and lived very long time again perhaps even 1,000 years. Then he was incarnated again but this time in pre flood first Egypt. It was during this incarnation he went to great lengths to preserve ancient wisdom in other forms than just teaching in the priesthood.
The majority of what we consider Egypt was really the civilization's second coming. Much if not most of the technology and wisdom had to be rediscovered and it was Joseph from an early Hebrew tribe that helped make Egypt's golden age happen. But all of that is another story.
The huge caches of items in Egyptian tombs were not to take to the afterlife. They were put in ministorage for their return and reincarnation.

Interesting video! Saint Augustine even devotes some time in his 5th century book City of God discussing Hermes Trismegistus in a positive light.
Yes, in the eighth book of his "City of God," Augustine mentions Hermes and his ability to animate statues of ancient gods, provided they are well built to represent that god. But remember that the context in which Augustine places Hermes and his powers is that of a pagan magician, NOT someone doing the will of God. The radical re-interpretation of the Renaissance scholars was that Hermes was indeed analogous to Moses. Linking therefore these two great traditions, the Greek and the Jewish under one single unbroken line.

The "Poimandres" is arguably the most beautiful story of the Corpus Hermeticum. That is a personal opinion, of course, but one that I cannot refrain from giving. It's older than that. It goes back to Mesopotamia. Freemasons come from the cult that created the Roman Catholic church that likely brought the mystery schools to Mesopotamia. This dude running this channel knows some things about their symbolism. Triangle up madculine. Triangle down feminine. Red and blue make purple. The three flames of God. The production quality here is fantastic. I learned something from this video. forgive me for offering a seemingly negative remark. it isn't about this video specifically. Mankind has done no good job at pulling himself up. Rather, we have failed spectacularly. Inasmuch as this is fascinating, and it is, these hermetic concepts have led to the downfall of mankind, rather than his elevation. it is reminiscent, to an extent, of the myth of Prometheus. But the myth of Prometheus is the product of man's arrogance.
Well, we HAVE pulled ourselves up if you compare our times to those of the Middle Ages (out of which the Renaissance emerged). We’ve gone to the moon and created Artificial Intelligence that mimics our mind. Whether that is for the good remains to be seen, and I share your pessimism. There are those who believe there was always something “demonic” about this whole endeavor of Enlightenment. They remind us of the name Lucifer which means “light bringer” (enlighter). Certainly we have departed from what Ficcino saw as “science,” which was the combination of ALL knowledge, spiritual and mechanical. And perhaps that is the reason of our current state of affairs.
Compassion is that what people call god. I call it the Blue God. A mental state of compassion is free from social correctness and free from religion. Compassion has no borders of anything. Compassion loves all beings equally much.

Well Thoth was an earlier incarnation of Hermes, he taught that god is within us all, God isn’t a him or her, (human concepts) but the source of the universe’s energy, yin and Yang, balance of both polarities
I had not heard of Hermes Trismegistus before this, but I reminded of the book of Thomas, as quoted by Joseph Campbell in an interview with Bill Moyers, "He who drinks from my mouth will become as I am and I shall be he." Before the exclusion of such writings in the standardization of Christianity at Nicea in 325 AD, this was part of the Gnostic Christian teachings. To understand God is to realize that we are God, the great mystery, the great consciousness. After Nicea, this would be a heretical idea for Christians, but still very much part of Buddhism.
Yes, the Corpus Hermeticum is part of a larger tradition, of which the Gospel that you mention is also a part. Some have called this "Gnosticism," and one of the best resources that I've found over the years is Hans Joans book "The Message of the Alien God" - g.co/kgs/m8s7sL. Having said that, I have also been fascinated by Campbell for decades now. And as always, it takes a long time to deconstruct someone who fascinates you. But eventually I came to realise that Campbell, like everyone else, had a tendency to cherry pick the parts that appeared to him the most beautiful, and fitted well with his theories. Having said that also, we have dedicated a 4-part series to Campbell's work and theories: Jason and the Argonaughts.

Do we know where this concept of the mind of god originates from? Does it go farther back than Plotinus? (whom the hermetic texts seem to partially be based on) I guess it's not super far off some of the interpretations of the Stoic notion of pneuma, but it's tricky, since it's an idea that tends to crop up as a rather natural conclusion whenever you arrive at anything resembling an immanent God.
In fact I believe that this is exactly what the innovative aspect of the Hermetic texts consists of. And no, I have not found this prior to the Hellenistic world. Of course, someone much more knowledgeable than me could inform us on the Hindu tradition related to this concept.
It is my personal opinion that the Egyptians and Hindus have known this

On the subject of consciousness aka the voice inside your head being god, are negative thoughts also the voice of god? and in accordance with the greek pantheon, are different types of voices (positive, negative, comical, inspirational) representative of different gods or are we talking monotheistically with this idea of god talking to god inside each one of us?
The difference between these late traditions of the Hellenistic period and the ancient Greek religion as described by someone like Homer, is that the latter is exoteric in its essence. It focuses, in other words, on things that happen outside of us, gods appearing out of nowhere, thunder breaking the skies as a sign from Zeus, two eagles flying on opposite directions announcing the god's will. What you find in the Coprus Hermeticum is one of the first testaments of a reversal, whereby spirituality becomes internal, and has to do with consciousness and transcendence rather than clear presences that are perceived trembling in the Greek light.
@@AncientGreeceRevisited thanks for the answer. i see the difference but I do remember an interview, I believe the sit down interview you did about Artemis, where you mention the difference between Eastern spirituality and ancient Greek one was that the Greeks saw the gods acting through the human form. I just struggle to understand how the greeks understood and spoke of the gods during these more ancient times.

@@adt3030 Yes. In general you'll find that the "German school" on Ancient Greece is not well represented at all. It's part of our work trying to bring it forth.
While it has little impact on your analysis of the renaissance. Here you say Hermes Trismegistus was a human priest. Although you suggest some doubt that one person wrote all the hermetica. Wikipedia suggests the "priest" himself was a fiction, and was a syncretic combination of Toth and Hermes. A new god both hermes and toth. which do you think? I ask because, some say the ideas are from a more ancient cult of Toth, theology/philosophy already known in egypt long before Hellenistic Egypt. So hermes and greek tradition is not really involved. It is ancient Egyptian wisdom, suppressed in the west... racism. But it seems mainstream thought that these are Hellenistic Egyptian ideas, partially lost to the west. But not banned. Where do you see it.

Very interesting and explicative of a lot of things and Michelangelo masterpiece in the Cappella Sistina looks exactly at this! Quite an interesting Opinion Piece - other researchers claim that (Copies of) the Emerald Tablets of Hermis was found in the 27th Century BC Pyramid of Saqqara, thus destroying the theories of some of the most erudite and profound scholars into Hermetic Lore , i.e. - Isaac Casaubon . I presume you are qouting from his book, but it is now abundantly clear, that rather than being an “exotic blend of Christian Greek-Jewish religion” (as Casaubon the renowned scholar) would have it, all these religions assimilated or amalgamated its teachings into its own.
Many of the world’s greatest minds, such as, Leonardo da Vinci (Ranked 10th on the Greatest Minds of the last 2,500 years), Michelangelo ( 1st on List of Greatest Minds ) Raphael, Sir Roger Bacon (Imperator of the Rosicrucian’s 11th ), Kepler(17th-with his postulation of many planets) Copernicus (21st), Giordano Bruno (86th) , Sir Isaac Newton ( 5th) Carl Gustav Jung, and other of the West’s greatest Intellects who shaped our thoughts and the science and technology we have today, admitted their indebtness to the Hermeticum

Hermes was not the god, but the man who received enlightenment. Hermes in ancient Greek poetry was the god of many things, but he was also the "psychopomp", the guide of the souls to the underworld. That is perhaps why the name was chosen.

The point is not to dwell on the surface forms, but try to capture the existential position of each religion. The fact that Hermes was both a Greek god AND a figure in the Hermetic Texts, or that Zeus and Osiris became merged during the late Hellenistic Era, or that Dionysus and Jesus might be historically related, does NOT mean as much as many people tend to think. The existential situation of Gnosticism, of which the Hermetic texts form a sub-set, was that of a desperate age, an age of confusion and escapism. In that, it resembles our age even more than it does ancient Greece proper, and the names of the figures that we encounter in these narratives are second to the deep yearning for and Eternity that seemed to have fled from everyday reality. Under this light, more connections can be drawn between Gnosticism and the globalist culture of today, than with some mystery cult from ancient Summer, when the gods still walked the earth besides humans.

the creators of these stories were the Steven Spielberg of the past. it is easy to see how the stories of Christ came from similar authors of the time. it seems that the most outrageous was the most perpetuated. that is why many believed that these gods were real.

You are right. Woman has been traditionally seen as the earthly force that pulls the spirit down. Matter has a feminine essence in most traditional systems of spirituality. The story of Eve is but a specific interpretation of this idea.

Where is the definition of "god" in all of this? This word was used at least five times in the video. Why is there is no need for any qualification when this word seems to be the highlight of the entire talk and perhaps our entire life? Why are 3 letters so revered and so often spoken, yet never explained, even with a simple sentence? Is there some universal definition that is so widespread and known in the bones of all of humanity that there is simply no need whatsoever to define it because to do so would be redundant? If so, I for one do not share in this assumption and maybe that makes me stupid. In my opinion, the elucidation-illumination of such words via the process of hermeneutics is the true vision-measure of anything else we have to say. But, if all we can say is "god" and nothing more, then what are we really saying? Why say any other word than "god" when it appears that all words lead to and serve this word, which for some hermetic reason, beyond perhaps that it is a symbol to express ineffable wonder and mystery, is not once ever interpreted? Then such words are like the golden idols which have traditionally been judged by those who claim to know and understand the meaning of the word "god" as shallow symbols of delusion.

I think the magic lies in what’s implied by your question. That we all share an intuitive understanding of “something” we call God, yet fail to define it. The fact that we rarely ever ask the question tells me it’s some kind of archetype within us. There is an “imago Dei,” an image of God that we don’t understand directly but only though it’s many reflections. When Christians tell you that Shiva is a “false God,” they still recognize that this image has the resemblance of what they know as God (but that it’s only an illusion). That is still recognizing something. It’s like saying that a desert mirage is not really water but “looks like water.” That confirms that water has a well known image that we all recognize, so much in fact that we can be tricked by its resemblance. There is something we all recognize as God, even if we agree in the details. I believe that is profound, if not a kind of proof.
