- Lions ambush buffalo and baby! An amazing, yet emotional lion vs buffalo sighting! Dramatic scenes as the Selati male lions start to stalk a herd of buffalo. The male lions have their eye on a buffalo cow with a newborn calf only minutes old. The action takes place on an open floodplain where the buffalo should notice the lions approaching, the newborn calf is not old enough to be aware of the danger...
Two male lions ambush the mother buffalo and the buffalo calf watches the lions unaware the third male is on it's way.
The third male lion leaps on the buffalo calf before assisting the other two lions to bring down the buffalo cow.

all these people bitching about lions and here I am, marvelling the majesty of this almost perfect kill. This is one of the most epic kills I have ever seen. That lion who grabbed the throat seems like an expert hunter.

Those lions were pros, the way they used patience, and waited for the buffalo to come to them, hiding in the bush, then there technique to take it down was textbook, the buffalo sized both of them up, the lions then became reactive, as soon as the first lion saw his opportunity he went for the neck, and the other immediatley jumped on its back. I love big cats!

It is about that stereotype that 'the lazy males live off the lionesses'... a life span of an average male lion is 12-14 years, from wich they live maximum 3-4 years in a pride excluding their childhood. They take care of themselves. Even, during their pride-life, they are who take down the bigger preys, and they protect their lionesses and their cubs against hyenas and nomadic males.
Yes, clear ! Because of their mane, they are more noticeable than the females, but being stronger, they killed some bigger preys. And, of course, they are very opportunist.

You can tell those are some experienced hunters. They were patient and didn't attack too early, chose the right target, launched at the best possible time and worked together perfectly to get the throat hold quickly and bring it down. Textbook stuff. No wonder they look so healthy and in such good condition.

thats what i was thinking. These are probably nomadic males, so they are used to hunting themselves rather than letting the females of their pride do the work. Whilst not the best stalkers their size and strength makes a hell of a difference for taking down large prey like this. Good job, but sad for the calf
