Thank you!
So, is this an improvisational piece or is this a performance of a rehearsed song that is played the same way each time?
To my ears, they sound like compositions or songs with lots of improvisations. You'd have to ask Bill Orcutt as he's the one playing the melody on his guitar. This is what most artists doing this kind of music are doing, basically. I do the same with my band, Slipstream Time Travel and when I play with others. Not everyone within the free jazz uses a melodic approach. Some choose to scream on the horn, or make noise. The underground music has loads of artists that work strictly from a noise-based approached. What Bill and Chris are doing is mainly along melodic lines. That's how I learned to play the drums. I use this approach all the time, despite appearances to the contrary. I'm always looking for melodic riffs or motifs from others when I play with them. The better players know and do it automatically. Thank you for your question.
This is most probably improvised music and they rehearse by improvising together and becoming familiar with one anothers voices. No piece of music is every truly played the same way each time, as much as a rock can never be thrown into the same river twice.
Some kind of bollocks
Thank you for your feedback!
