The man clearly did more than a few things right. He achieved success in a business that wasn't quite willing to give a black man the chance at the time and laid the foundation for his son to achieve at a level no other professional wrestler has before or likely will again. Rest in peace, man. You made all our lives just a little bit better.

Sad that Rocky is gone...R.I.P. Rocky....BUT, sad also that Tony lying about their relationship. I was 17 when they won the tag titles in the then WWF. Rocky worked out in my gym, Corporate Fitness Center (now defunct) in the Acme Mall in Hamden, CT, by himself. I must have seen him there 40 times total in 1.5 years, always by himself. Atlas worked out at Mike Katz's World Gym East close by on Treadwell St. I only saw Rocky work upper body (as most guys then only did this as the ring moves and they need steady legs under them to perform) every other day - M, W, F, Sun., Tues., etc. He didn't talk to anyone. I spotted him a few times from a distance as he concentrated and liked to lifted heavy, but no belt or wraps. He said he could keep 405 on his chest for 10 minutes, so no need to hurry. Best I saw him do was a 405 lbs bench for 2 reps, but he never pushed it. He took his time and long rests between sets. He did say he came to WWF at 280lbs and began training for physique (which the WWF wanted for him and Atlas to get the straps) and that when they won he was 245 lbs. and was he ripped. He also said he had a bad back and it all started when he went over 240lbs bodyweight. He said many wrestler have bad backs due to the biz and the what they weigh because the body is not made to be huge size. I also spotted his son Dwayne when he lost control of the 275lbs he was benching at like 12 years old. It was a great experience for a young kid like me to say the least.

Tony was definitely a freak of nature, nobody had the body like Tony Atlas back in the day, he wasn't just a body, Tony could work, as did Rocky, NOBODY threw a dropkick like Rocky Johnson back in the day, today we think of AJ Styles and Okada when talking about the best dropkicks in wrestling, back then it was Rocky Johnson... R.I.P. Rocky

I met Rocky briefly at Casey's Gym in N.E. Portland, Oregon around 1984-6 sometime. He was huge for that time and strong as an ox. We watched him warm up with 315 on the bench then do a 500 plus bench press without a lift-off or spotter, with ease. We all stood there with our jaws hitting the floor. He was friendly, humble, and funny.

I have to take my hat off to Tony Atlas for sharing his experiences with the late Rocky Johnson. He'd put it quite eloquently that although Rocky was a proud man, he was also assertive and kind-hearted. Tony expressed genuine appreciation and love for this man who was not only his tag team partner, but also his mentor. Rest in peace, Rocky Johnson...When a loved one becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.
