CAMINO DE SANTIAGO Pilgrimage French Way- solo in October/November 2019

  • Hey there!
    My name is Maddi, and in October/November 2019 I walked part of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage solo- what an adventure! I walked 398km in total, while the entire pilgrimage is around 790km. I walked in two stages: St Jean Pied de Port to Burgos, and from Sarria to Santiago. I’m twenty one years old, not the world’s most fit person, and only booked my flights a few weeks in advance- and I so hope that this video perhaps encourages you to do the Camino one day, and gives you a little insight into my time on the Camino trail. The most important piece of advice I ever received was that everybody’s Camino is different, and to not compare my Camino to anybody else’s. This here is my story, and I’m sure that yours will be completely different- and all the better for it!
    I’m back home now in sunny Australia, and thought I’d say that my knee turned out to be sprained, and will take about 3 months to recover without surgery- thank goodness! Also, I can’t really CZcams, so apologies for any dodgy editing and the fact this video goes for about twenty million hours. Thank you so much for watching!

    Maddi, you are so lovely and such a gorgeous Camino you have done. Every Camino is unique and yours is extra special flavored with your sweetness!! The Camino angels throw tests in you way to see how you deal with life's foibles. Maybe the angels see that you don't need the cCamino right now as much as others do

    Greetings Maddi from California! What a delightful video of your Camino experience you have shared with all of us. I walked the Camino (in three installments) in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Your video, commentary, and awesome spirit, brought back so many memories and was a reminder of the impact this journey had on me. Thanks again for sharing…Buen Camino and God bless, my friend!

    I enjoyed watching your video and was so glad to read that you only sprained your knee. If you decide to do it or something similar again I would recommend the use of poles as they help a lot on tricky descents like that into Zuburi. If you fancy walking the French Way again the countryside is wonderful in May when the flowers are blooming and fields are greener. I walked in the Spring 2019 and was extremely lucky with the weather and took it slowly about 20 or so kilometres a day Matthew

    What a lovely video. You are inspiring young lady with a very warm and endearing personality. I hope you have no trouble with your knee now. I wish you every success in life and that the angels will look after you. I have been walking various caminos for many years. I walked the French camino from St Jean to SdeC IN 2014 and also from St Jean to Sarria in stages, over other years. Although not getting any younger, I hope to recommence walking caminos next year. Coming from Ireland it is convenient and inexpensive to fly to Spain. With your surname being Hegarty, you must have a bit of Irish in you.

    about the knee injury. i know what you mean. it's like, why me? why now? why ever? right?much sadness, anger, disappointment, feelings of inadequacy/inferiority follows. felt like my life had ended. but i have since accepted it as part of my life's unique obstacles. i cycle a lot now and i'm grateful i can still do that and i enjoy it too. i can still walk, but if i walk too far or too hard, my knee injury may flare up and immobilize me. i'll try to walk the camino, but if not possible, i'll cycle it :) i've decided this is a spiritual pilgrimage i have to undertake as a christian. i'm glad you made it and that your knee is okay!

    Hi Maddi, I enjoyed your video very much. Pity your knee played up. I was surprised you didn't use hiking sticks as they would have taken a lot of weight off your knee. I'm returning to the Camino in April. I've just had my novel about the Camino called The Catching of the Camino Wind. It's out on Amazon and on Kindle. Will you do a post on your journey home and your injury?

I definitely will if I go back now!! Oh how amazing, I'll have to have a look :) not at this stage no, youtube isn't really my thing! But I'm home now, and have learnt that my knee is sprained rather than torn cartilage- so lots of swimming and bike riding will do the trick

I am planning to do the camino during the same time and the weather is being a concern: how did you manage to get your shoes dry every morning in a series of rainy days and did you have a sleeping bag for the cold nights? Thank you in advance! :)

    • @maddihegarty8607
      @maddihegarty8607  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you so much for the beautiful comment Diana! I'm so happy to hear you are planning a Camino 😊 I had waterproof boots which I sprayed with some extra waterproofing spray before leaving Aus. After a rainy day, I'd take my boots off at the albergue, remove the inner sole, and stuff them with newspaper (provided at every albergue)- and this seemed to do the trick as they were dry by morning. I did not have a sleeping bag, just a sleeping silk liner as I thought all albergues had blankets- but probably perhaps 10% did not. So, I would recommend bringing a small sleeping bag (most other pilgrims had them), I reckon that's what I'd do next time. I survived just fine with the liner because places had heating, but some nights got a little chilly! Hope that essay helps haha 😊

      @maddihegarty8607  Před 10 dny +1

      Hello! Amazing to hear you are going to do the Camino solo, what an experience :)
      You're right yes, I arrived into Santiago on Nov 10th. I started in Saint-Jean on October 7th (bearing in mind that the whole time wasn't spent on the Camino, I had to take a rest and missed the section between Burgos and Sarria). I found October to be warm and sunny for the most part, with cool nights. November became colder and rainier (perhaps also as I moved more towards the west of Spain?). According to fellow pilgrims and albergue hosts, Oct-Nov is a quieter season overall on the Camino, as you're not struggling to find beds at night or anything like that. It might have changed since 2019, but I hope you have an amazing + fulfilling experience!

      Thank you! If you mean booking my accommodation/experiences along the Camino- I didn't book anything except for a little hotel in Santiago, I simply arrived at albergues and hoped they would have free space :)
