  • I'm not talking survival manuals. I want to know if you were only going to have 5 books to entertain you in the seclusion of a deserted island, which ones would you choose?

    This was so fun to watch!! I’ve only read 2 of your 5 picks(The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and Thornhedge).
    It’s really hard to choose just 5 books but, I think these are my picks:
    The Lord of the Rings(because it was originally one book)
    The Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
    Radiance by Grace Draven
    The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle
    Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk

      Thank you!
      It is a deceptively difficult prompt. I have several of your picks on my TBR. Becky Chambers is an author I've been wanting to read more from and The Last Unicorn is one I've just never picked up but I need to. To be honest, I've never read the full trilogy of The Lord of the Rings. I should probably alleviate that at some point. I have watched Fight Club but never read the book. Quite a diverse selection of books! I love it!

    Love this idea and great picks. I’m actually making Mask of Mirrors my reward to motivate me to finish up my series goals this year because I think I’ll love it so much😆
    The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez would definitely be my number one pick. It’s such a beautifully layered story. I’ve reread it once already and it only improved the story for me🐢would also bring Frankenstein because I also love rereading that one every few years. The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen since I’d want a graphic novel and the art and story are equally stunning. The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu is my fave short story collection so gotta take that and then for my last one probably something by Cat Sebastian she’s such a comfort author for me🌻

      @Danni.Dabbles  Před 3 měsíci

      Yay! I'm so excited to hear that Evie! I hope you love Mask of Mirrors. And good luck to you in your series goal!
      The Spear Cuts Through Water is one I haven't gotten to yet. I have heard amazing things. Frankenstein is another one I keep putting off! I didn't think about bringing a graphic novel but that is a great idea. I have been astounded at some of the artists and how they truly help bring the story to life. That would be a fun reprieve if deserted on an island for sure! I have completely forgotten about The Paper Menagerie. What a great collection!

    just bind it all into one giant book.. an major omnibus 😂

    This is a very difficult question. I could probably pick 5 books, but I keep thinking about all the other books I haven't read yet. For example, Brandon Sanderson, I haven't read his books yet, but I know they would be a good contender for one of my five for the island. I can't take a chance on picking one of his books and leaving one that I have read and loved, but I know if I had read it, I could possibly pick it... This is too stressful! 🤣

    Fun video Danni! As someone who used to read a lot of classic fantasy, I really need to read Brandon Sanderson. I would choose Weaveworld by Clive Barker and Magician by Raymond E Feist. I will probably give the horror a skip if I was in this situation. Thorn Hedge sounds good and I love the drop of blood on the cover.

    • @Danni.Dabbles
      @Danni.Dabbles  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks Cliff! Both of those books are on my TBR because of you. I did think that scary might not be in my best interest, but I figured what the heck! Thornhedge was lovely. A cozy story with a bit of sinister in the back ground. I love T. Kingfisher.

  • @RDsLibrary
    @RDsLibrary Před 3 měsíci

    Really interesting to hear your choices and reasoning. I'd be tempted to take The Way of Kings or The Liar’s Knot, too, as they were both 5* for me. You Let Me In sounds very interesting. It's deceptively difficult to pick only 5. I'll go for two chonkers I love that will kill some time, let my mind drift to a different world and have things I might discover on a re-read - The Name of the Wind by Pat Rothfuss and The Neutronium Alchemist by Peter F Hamilton. I'm going to pick a chonker I've yet to read from my TBR that gives me something new to read, sounds exciting and offers plenty to think about - A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. I'm also taking a gamble with a supposedly very good fan written book that finishes A Song of Ice and Fire - The North Remembers by Silverblood. Lastly, I'll pick Cain's Jawbone by E. Powys Mathers, which is a mystery book you read through once then have to reassemble in the right order to solve who the murderers are.

    • @Danni.Dabbles
      @Danni.Dabbles  Před 3 měsíci +1

      The Name of the Wind almost made my list but I took The Way of Kings in its stead. I haven't heard of The Neutronium Alchemist. I see that it is a sci fi space opera series! That would be fun! I love that you're taking a risk and bringing a book you haven't read! I struggled with that when I was making my list. I never finished The Game of Thrones books, but I could see the appeal of a fan written book. I've heard of Cain's Jawbone and I find it very intriguing. I remember someone talking about actually taking the book apart to try and figure it out. When you've got all the time in the world why not try and solve a murder!

    Okay, this was NOT an easy thought process.
    1) We only have digital books...so I'd actually have to borrow the copy from the library or buy it...before leaving on this journey - "a three hour tour 🎶" (from Gilligan's Island). Just imagine the late fees. Yikes!
    2) I, like you...am a series geek. The longer the story, the better. Since there are only FIVE choices, I wouldn't want to break up the Wheel of Time, so I went in a totally different direction.
    3) So, I went the strategic route. Here are my choices:
    I - The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I love this story, but it is ONLY the first of three novels in the trilogy, but I've waited MANY years and read it multiple times, what difference would it make...if I was on an island? Joking aside. I love the prose in this book. The deep meanings of every word/sentence. The care that he takes in crafting the story...is simply beautiful. SO, that's pick #1.
    II - One of my favourite stories of all-time is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I've read it many times, and also seen every adaptation ever made (to the best of my knowledge) and the story NEVER gets old. The choices that have been made and the consequences...just keep my mind working. Pick #2
    III - I'd need a book that I have NEVER read, and one that is long...so that I could discover a new text that would help me pass the time...and so I'd pick War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. AND, if I did not like it, or even destested it...after the fifth reading...at least I'd have kindling for a cold night. Pick #3
    IV - I'd take Touch by Claire North. It is such a unique story...of a person who lives many lives...by taking the life/visage of a person, by simply a touch. There are moral and ethical things to tangle with and the idea of self, so it would be a book that I could chew fairly well...in thinking.
    V - Like you, I'd have to go with something light and joyful, so I'd pick The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I've read the book many times, but have seen the adaptation by Rob Reiner SO many times, that I practically know it by heart. So this book would be for endless joy.
    and the most impossible task of all..."there can be only one" (Highlander reference). What would I take? Hmmm?
    I would ultimately choose Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. It is such a classic and it has never disappointed me thus far, so it would sustain me on this proverbial "desert island".
    Thanks for this...and how could you?

    • @Danni.Dabbles
      @Danni.Dabbles  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Very nice Graff! You really did think through your choices.
      I almost put The Name of the Wind on this list, but I opted for The Way of Kings instead. I laughed to hear your thoughts on waiting on an island for the end of the trilogy. I've never read Les Miserables but I should at some point. War and Peace is not on my TBR, but I could see the intelligence of choosing that book. I didn't think of having kindling. I've never heard of Touch, but I'm adding it to my TBR. It sounds fantastic. And AHHH!! The Princess Bride. What a lovely pick! It would definitely brighten your day and bring on some of those nostalgic moments. I love that pick!
      Thanks for playing! It was really fun to go through your process.
