I remember a scene from the 1980's Robin Hood movie. Where Kevin Costner, as Robin Hood, used a spy glass for the first time. And almost fell off a wall, trying to attack the soldiers in front of his face. (Still my favorite Robin Hood movie!)
Darn! I was expecting a good old binocular prank on you Santee! You can't go wrong with putting black circles around someone's eyes after they've used binoculars.
Though most don't own a set anymore, I've got one. We live on a hill overlooking some rolling landscape, so if I wanna see all the way down to the highway, they come in pretty handy.
Thanks again , Santee & Co. I learned how to properly use binoculars when I was a lookout in the navy . Both my ships had a pair of huge binos on both bridge wings mounted on swivels that we called ' The Big Eyes ' . We could identify vessels , read signal flags , and identify aircraft out to the visual horizon with those boys . It's speculated ( pardon the pun ) that if the lookouts of the RMS Titanic had been issued binos they might have seen the iceberg in time to save the ship . Anyways , I hope you and your compadres had a Happy Easter . Also , I haven't forgotten my promise to send you some Blenheim Hot Ginger Ale . I've bought y'all a sixpack , some cans of boiled peanuts , and some other goodies from S.C. .
Great stuff again, dear Santee. And good to know. Thank you so much for your information and uploading this video 📹 Happy 😊☺ peaceful and blessed Easter holiday season. 🐰🐥🐣🐤🐇 Love 💟 and Light 🕯 Bine.
Early Spy Glasses , showed and inverted view. Only when compound lens glasses were introduced did the view become right way up. Speacking of Galilieo, were Galiaean Sights used in the Old West ? Strictly Feild Glases use a set of lenses, so can have about a 5x magnification. Prismatic Binoculars , use a Prism to bend the light and increase the focal length , so can magnify more.
The spy glass episode about Brigham Young was in the summer of 1847 in a book titled 111 Days To Zion. The party stopped for a day looking for it which they found it. This paperback was a compilation of diary excerpts about the trip along what later became known as the Mormon Trail. I really like your series Santee and cohorts :-)
Nothing beats a great pair of Binos and a great spotting scope. It's part of my arsenal. Oh, tripods too. Yeah, I carry all that stuff. I even have a pair of Binos in my pickup. Rides with me always. Great stuff yet again Santee. Thanks my brother!
when I was young I had a nice spyglass. Of course, being a kid, I liked to swing it open and use it as a toy lightsaber. It put up with such abuse for years before one of the lenses finally gave up and detached to rattle around the inside of the tube forevermore. These days I use a Vortex monocular when hiking, since it cooperates better with my poor eyesight and glasses than binoculars tend to. It even has a ranging reticle so I can estimate ranges of things pretty accurately, something I bet would have been extremely useful in the old west.
Whats impressive about this is knowing they used hand ground lenses before electricity. Ive got a scovil camera from about 1850 and the lenses are great!
Excellent. Great job. And you are right, I don't see them used much at events. I have a small pair of binoculars, but haven't used them. Keep up the great videos Santee!
Love the Mash episode clip at the end, such a great show and I wonder who is the genius that came up with the idea for prank binoculars, because can you imagine the irony and how funny it would be if someone handed you a pair for trying to find raccoons going through your garbage. Then a raccoon see's you and walks towards you offering a piece of garbage then later looking in the mirror to find out why. 😆😂🤣
I like to keep one in the car. Now as then, it is important to see what is coming. By the way, the first time one looks upon the moon with binoculars or a telescope (simply a big spyglass), one sees it as a solid celestial body and can share the sense of wonder felt by Galileo so long ago. :)
Wonderful work. It makes me think of all those quiet inventions that seldom get mention. How many lives were saved because of binoculars? You can't put a number on it because it is something that DIDN'T happen. No doubt they kept a lot of people out of bad situations.
Darn it Santee, now i need to get myself some spyglasses too. ;) Great video as always :) Keep up the great work you do, we are already looking forward to the next one.
I used both, spy glass and field glasses, over the years doing living history as Confederate Scout and Confederate Guerrilla. I prefer the field glasses.
Very nice, Santee. I've got a couple of Binocs, including a vintage pair of Russian ones (they're big) that still work great. Though personally, I prefer a modern-day monocular. The Japanese ones are best. But very pricey. The higher end ones from China are excellent. Great for spotting wildlife on the plains.
Bill showed his smarts, he got out before he got stuck with Custer for eternity 🤣 the military only really started using spyglasses in the 1710s, the first British war in the Americas utilized them for the first time with the one used by the commander of the army being found in a barn
Hella yeah I need me some field glasses or maybe just glasses me eyes are getting a bit blury these days lol, a spy glass would come in handy..well done mate love it.. have a brilliant weekend ahead
Oh man. I was really hoping for some kind of *PUNishment* for an opener; Like, oh maybe, "Let me *see* what I can find when I take a close *look* into this topic." Sorry, my dad jokes are showing. Thanks for the Saturday morning start. I look for your videos first thing every weekend the same way I looked for Saturday morning cartoons when I was young. My favorite was always Bugs Bunny, heck all of the Loony Tunes were the best. Stay safe out there man. 😎
You know what might be a cool episode? Clearing up the culture division on “free grazers” and maybe talk about the term itself. I’d love to better understand the disputes between these free-grazers and the common public in those days. 🤷🏻♂️ 🤠
I've done a couple on words and the wisdom and will do some more. By the way, that one isn't true. The term "shot" goes much farther back in time. A cartridge was less expensive than a shot of lquor back then.

I see what you did there, and from far away too! Great video Santee!
