Awesome Beat JD flick, every line a camp classic. There's actually a Roger Corman-produced sequel called "Velocity" from 1999 filmed with a Nicholson lookalike. A lot of it is flashbacks of "The Wild Ride" but still an interesting film just the same, as an older Johnny Varron tries to redeem himself.

Harvey Berman (the producer/Director) became an acting teacher in Contra Costa College in Concord, Ca. He was my acting teacher when I attended his classes in 1979 - 1981. He mentioned directing this film and working with Jack and Roger Corman. He never did say why he did not continue directing films. I wish pressed him more on why.

I don't think so at all. He was looking for his big break and if The Wild One (1953) and James Dean were the hottest movies in the USA in the fifties then Nicholson the rebelious fifties subversive would want to ride that sixties surfboard as far as he could take it. All the way to the beach or back. But he continues to the bigger breakers and rolls in to Easy Rider (1969).

It was a middle class town, but plenty of working people. Our little ranch house, very conservative sold for over a half million bucks, and unless you are making a lot of money, it's impossible to buy back there anymore. Yeah, this was set in the midst of the teen-angst, James dean era. Later in the decade, Jack and the crew discovered psychedelics, grew their hair out and got all "groovy" on us. Hence Easy Rider and a whole new era of youthful rebellion ensued. Of course, Vietnam played a big role. Looking back, movies like this one (and the beach pictures) denote how innocent we were, coming out of the 1950s. Vietnam changed all that; yet Jack remained viable and, through the movies he made, left for posterity an interesting and valuable record of what life was (is) like in America throughout the last 6-plus decades. Lame as it is, The Wild Ride is part of that record.
